Rishi Sunak Fights Back After National Service Plan is Ridiculed
The Prime Minister was forced to defend his National Service programme last night after it came under heavy fire from allies and opponents alike. Details of the plan are sketchy, the Army’s top brass doesn’t like it and a Conservative Defence Minister poo-pooed the idea when questioned about it last week. The Mail has more.
The policy announcement sparked a heated debate over the weekend – with Labour branding it “desperate” and even some Conservatives worried that it was akin to a “grown-up Boy Scouts”. But others in the party backed the PM, as did former defence chiefs.
Under the plan, 18-year-olds will be given a choice between a full-time placement in the Armed Forces for 12 months or spending one weekend a month for a year volunteering in their community.
Last night, it was revealed that teenagers would be incentivised to sign up for the scheme with fast-tracked interviews for graduate schemes in both the private and public sectors, and the opportunity to highlight National Service on their UCAS applications to help them getting into university. …
Studies from Norway and Israel, which have national military service schemes, suggest they give youngsters a “leg up” into subsequent careers, the Tories said.
The Conservatives have promised to establish a Royal Commission, bringing in expertise from across the military and civil society to establish the details of the programme. It will be asked to look at models in other countries to design incentives for those taking part in Britain.
The party said the Commission would be tasked with bringing forward a proposal for how to ensure the first pilot is open for applications in September 2025.
After that, it would seek to introduce a new National Service Act to make the measures compulsory by the end of the next Parliament, the party said.

There was a short lived programme, National Citizen Service, for exactly the kids this is aimed at. They did a three week programme of activities, ending in some community based project, mostly focussed on climate or sustainability. It ran from 2012 to 2018 and was a David Cameron favourite. By the time it was killed off, it was dying, as the Millennials were morphing into GenZ. It was also (I know this as I was a supplier of services to it) run by the sort of people that shouldn’t be indoctrinating our youth. They were mainly teachers who were grabbing some extra cash for doing as little as possible, or ‘Community Workers’. The financial side of it was a bit sketchy. Anyway it all got killed off after being watered down, which should tell you about its success.
This proposal is just breathing life back into the corpse of NCS. Another great idea that hasn’t been thought through to any extent. It is a simplistic, superficial answer to a complex problem of economics and social engagement.
If we got rid of the Liberal Progressive Virus we would not need the army. As it stands, countries seeking to have an foreign policy independent of those of the major nuclear-armed powers need nukes of their own to be safe from nuclear blackmail. And – surprise, surprise – all of them have. Israel, India, Pakistan, China and North Korea are all minor to miniscule nuclear powers. Many wars need to be fought. WW1 and 2 were the ‘good wars’. I would list Korea in that category. The forever war with Russia is not a ‘good war’ and could be stopped tomorrow. ‘Opportunity’ is a strange word for something mandatory.
Mandatory schemes, properly incentivised, can, of course, offer a whole array of opportunities.
It will be for the Royal Commission, with contributions from yourself and others, to ensure that happens.
I would be astonished if it is not hedged about with so many exemptions that it is, in effect, voluntary.
Volunteering in the community is already voluntary. Why would we need a compulsory scheme “with so many exemptions that it is, in effect, voluntary” to create what already exists?
Because the Royal Commission, to which you will be able to contribute, will make sure that it will be properly incentivised, as similar civic service schemes are, for example, in France.

National service was binned in 1960. Bringing it back, combined with Starmer’s wheeze to give 16yr olds the vote will guarantee nobody under 30 ever votes conservative. Perhaps that’s the intended outcome?

As far as I can ascertain this is a voluntary scheme and limited to 30,000 places. In my view it is a great opportunity for kids to get a taste of working in an area they are interested in, hadn’t considered without any long-term commitment. It is estimated at £2.5 billion to setup and put in place. If 10% of those kids are successful then the money is well spent because they will be paying back more than they may otherwise have done.
My brother couldn’t get into the Navy when he first left school but was accepted the following year; he’d have jumped at this sort of opportunity whilst waiting for his second chance.
The issue here is a) The name they’ve used is stupid b) As usual with the UniParties they are completely and utterly useless at putting forward a sandwich run order let alone a policy.

It’s pretty obvious why the military and civil service ‘establishment’ is adamantly opposed to this: A national service based on more-or-less universal conscription would end up being “terribly white” as there’d be no way to discriminate against the majority of the population under such a scheme, ie, all the plans for superpreferential treatment of people with ‘global majority skin colour’ would go the way of the Dodo.
I would rather the RoP mongers did not get free military training of any sort.

Well it’s not just opening the doors, is it? It’s shoving them through the doors, on pain of the alternative “community service” option. Of course this is all currently framed in rose-tinted language that promises to fulfil any number of vacuous cliches, like “restoring a sense of national pride and cultural identity”, “getting them out of their bubble”, and so on..
One must ask: Why is the tories plan to “open doors” and create “opportunities” now, then wait until the end of the next parliament before making it mandatory with it’s National Service Act. Are they concerned about the future of our young people and eager to provide enriching, life-changing experience and a sense of national and social cohesion? Or are they more concerned about the rapid decimation of our military forces because of their infiltration by the forces of wokery and DEI and vaccine mandates?
I think this “story” has received enough column inches. It’s an irrelevant distraction from the important issues.

This is nonsense. The core feature of slavery is that human beings are considered property of other human beings. That’s not the case for conscripts.
I don’t know if it’s a good idea or not. What I do know is that it’s electoral suicide to announce such a momentous, unforeseen and apparently ill-considered policy proposal at much the same time as announcing an election. That said, the Conservative’s self destruct button was activated many moons ago, so at least they’ve demonstrated some consistency amongst the melee.
