Dozens of North Sea Oil and Gas Fields Blocked by Net Zero
Dozens of North Sea oil and gas fields are being blocked from development by Labour’s Net Zero policies, with 51 known new fields and 60 extensions to existing fields in British waters rendered “unviable” by Government policy. The Telegraph has the story.
There are 51 known new fields in British waters that could be feeding domestic pipes but have been rendered “unviable” by current government policies, including the windfall tax and a ban on exploration licences.
On top of these, some 60 extensions to existing fields are being held back for the same reasons, according to trade body Offshore Energy UK (OEUK).
The data emerged from a survey of offshore operators to see how they have responded to the taxes and regulations imposed by successive governments.
OEUK said the fields would be viable under “reform to the current regulatory and fiscal regime”, particularly by overhauling the windfall tax – known officially as the energy profits levy.
David Whitehouse, the trade body’s chief executive, said: “Our proposal will unlock immediate investment, secure tens of thousands of jobs and deliver more tax, not less, for essential services like schools and hospitals.
“The future of the North Sea is in our hands. Our message to the Government is simple. Reform the energy profits levy in 2026 to unlock more tax, not less, support more jobs, not less and deliver more homegrown energy, not less.”
Ed Miliband, the Energy Secretary, is under increasing pressure to relax the Government’s stance on North Sea drilling as the Middle East crisis heightens scrutiny of energy imports.
Along with the Conservatives, John Swinney, the SNP leader and Scottish First Minister, industry leaders including Greg Jackson, the Octopus Energy boss, Chris O’Shea, the British Gas chief and Tara Singh, the RenewablesUK boss, are among those who have backed more drilling.
Supporters say that maximising the North Sea’s output would generate tax revenues, preserve jobs and result in lower carbon emissions than oil and gas from abroad.
However, Mr Miliband has pushed back against the calls, arguing that it cannot “take a penny off bills”.

The Government will not take a penny off bills. It is not that they can’t they are just not going to.
Because the whole GREEN AGENDA is about pricing us out of using energy, as affordable reliable energy is the driver of Industrial Capitalism. Climate Change Policies are essentially just anti capitalist ones masquerading as concern for the planet.
Genuine question – how does somebody like milliband sleep at nights knowing that his decisions are leading directly and predictably to mass unemployment, deindustrialisation and misery for hundreds of thousands of people?
He must know, he cannot not know.
Is his hatred of the English people really so all consuming?
Yes.
But greater is his hatred of the idea that he is irrelevant and just plain wrong.
I’d wager his parents never ever told him he was mistaken.
His father inculcated his Marxism into both of his sons, however it seems that Ed got the worst of it.
He’s intelligent but deranged.
Well it wont really effect him. He will have been promised unlimited travel. A generous meat allowance. As much travel outside his 15 min city as he wants. A massive carbon footprint allowance.
The same deal will have been offered to all politicians that push their countries to Agenda 2030 / WEF goals. I have no proof of this one way or the other. It’s just a crazy theory!
The Milibands of this world don’t work for us. They think they are working for “Greater Good” of the world. They are fully aligned United Nations and World Economic Forum Lackeys. To them our impoverishment is helping to redistribute the worlds wealth and we have become prosperous by using more than our fair share of the worlds resources and we must STOP doing that. We are to be fobbed of with unreliable unaffordable energy instead (wind and sun)
There is no doubt that lower tax rates and simpler taxes would “deliver more tax, not less, for essential services like schools and hospitals”. However, the priority should not be to spend more on anything. All additional tax should be used to reduce the deficit and debts.
Who will rid us of this turbulent pratt?
It isn’t just Labour that are doing this though. Many in other parties will support and vote for this kind of thing and NET ZERO is actually enshrined in UK law. It was a Conservative who gave us the Net Zero Amendment in 2019 (Teresa May) This self flagellation energy policy is a total disaster. Not for the climate, as the UK is only 1% of the alleged “global” problem called climate change, but a disaster for Industry, economic competitiveness, and for forcing millions into energy poverty with the highest electricity prices in the world. The Political Class who support this madness are putting the ticking of Emission Reduction boxes FIRST and the people and Industry LAST. There is no reason other than ideological stubbornness why the UK should be pretending to save the planet harder and faster than all other countries in such a short period of time. When we import gas and oil from afar we actually increase the CO2 emissions that politicians claim we MUST reduce. We get no tax revenue from it and thousands of well paying jobs are lost in places like Aberdeen ——–All so Politicians can get a little gold star on their lapel… Read more »
