Keir Starmer’s Iran Problem
In a piece for the Daily Sceptic last year, I outlined the existential crisis facing Labour. While the party was still enjoying moderate support in the opinion polls, practically all major Left-wing social media activists had abandoned it. This most important reason for this was simple: Labour’s stance on Gaza.
Ordinary Left-wing voters care primarily about issues like the NHS and the cost of living. However, the sorts of people who shape public opinion — influencers, journalists and campaigners — care a great deal about Gaza. And they are very dissatisfied with Labour’s stance on the issue. As a consequence, they’ve largely shifted to supporting other parties, notably the Greens.
Now Labour’s problems seem to be getting worse. Since the start of the Iran War, Sir Keir Starmer has tried to position himself as a stalwart defender of British national interests, steadfastly refusing to join the much-criticised US-Israeli bombing campaign. But the Left-wing social media activists aren’t buying it.
In a viral tweet posted at the end of March, Starmer claimed that “we aren’t getting dragged into the Middle East conflict” because “I will always make decisions that are in the national interest”.
However, the tweet got heavily ratioed by thousands of negative comments. All the most popular ones were comments from large Left-wing accounts denouncing the Prime Minister for allowing US bombers to take off from British airfields.
After all, the Government had initially refused the use of British airfields on the grounds that any bombing campaign would violate international law, only to backtrack after a phone call with Trump. And several European countries have gone as far as denying their airspace to the Americans.
Meanwhile, Zack Polanski, Jeremy Corbyn and other popular Left-wing politicians have been repeatedly pointing out Britain’s obvious complicity in the war. (Starmer’s own net approval rating is hovering at minus-50.) Suppose that Ireland allowed Russia to use Irish airfields to strike Britain. Would we say that Ireland had ‘not been dragged into the conflict’? It’s preposterous — and the Left-wing influencers aren’t fooled.
A YouGov poll asked Britons whether they supported the US-Israeli bombing campaign. A majority of all voters and an overwhelming majority of Left-wing voters — 80% of Labour voters, 86% of Lib Dems and 88% of Greens — said they opposed it.
Likewise, a More in Common poll asked Britons which side in the conflict they sympathise with more. By far the most common answer among all voters was “neither”. But what’s remarkable is that among Labour voters, about as many said “the Iranian side” as said “the Israeli and American side”. And among Lib Dem and Green voters, more said “the Iranian side”. Among Conservative and Reform voters, by contrast, more said “the Israeli and American side”.
So rather than remaining neutral like several European Governments, Keir Starmer is supporting the side that is favoured by most Right-wing voters but disfavoured by most Left-wing voters.
All this has to be understood in a context where Trump and his foreign policy are extremely unpopular. The US President has a net approval rating of minus-65 (even lower than Starmer). And when asked whether the US has had a positive or negative impact on the world in recent years, about 85% of Left-wing voters say “negative”.
A party that relies on young people simply cannot be successful in today’s political environment if it lacks support on social media. And while Starmer’s Middle East policy may not be the only grievance that Left-wing influencers have against Labour, it’s surely an important one. A recent seat projection put the Greens on 104 and Labour on just nine. If Starmer can’t stop haemorrhaging voters, even that may prove optimistic.

Keeping the best news until the end. “A recent seat projection put Labour on just 9 seats”. Put out more flags !!
Good news indeed, until the realisation sinks in that all the hand wringing, pacifying, wet wipe ,lefty, Muzzie loving types have jumped to the Greens !..
Yes, indeed, you’re right of course but one can but hope that sufficient of the wet-wipe, lefty, mentally febrile, thick-as-pig detritus (but NOT Muzzie-loving) types will stay with the Labour Party, thus splitting the Moron vote 50/50 and allowing a Common Sense candidate through to win the seat. At least, that’s what I allow myself to dream every night !!
The way he picked his diplomat
The way he took the knee
The memory of all that
No, no, they can’t take that away from me
All together now
No, they can’t take that away from me
A good article.
However, the support will change if we have power blackouts and fuel shortages. It was interesting to hear one far leftie mouthpiece being more concerned about his own supply of petrol than the possibility of nuclear warfare and the fate of thousands of Iranians.
Nothing like wiping someone’s face in the mess to change opinions fast.
If any of my net zero loving friends complain. I will say ” You want to save the planet dont you?”
I don’t like Starmer, but even so, as far as I can see he is in an impossible situation.
The conflict in the Middle East is fundamentally unresolvable.
On the one hand, it is totally understandable that Israel feels fearful of a large country whose declared aim is the annihilation of the Jewish state working on a nuclear weapons program.
It is also true that Iran demonstrably finances and supports terrorist groups.
We have enough problems with militant Islam.
On the other hand, I have serious doubts that bombing Iran will make it surrender and turn into a friendly state. Blair dragging the UK into the Iraq war was clearly a bad mistake.
So how do you resolve the conflict?
In contrast to the flag-waving mobs, the armchair strategists and Greta Thunberg, I have no answer.
Good points
The strategic objective is not to turn Iran the way you describe. Donald Trump’s opponents will try to declare the actions as a failure even though the principal objectives have already been largely achieved and seem certain to be completed in a couple of weeks.
I do not know whether it was expected that Iran would be able to largely block the Straights or that it would attack other Muslim states. I don’t doubt the YS expected European allies, whose economies depend on reliable supplies of oil and gas, would help generally and in the Staights in particular.
I doubt the US knew the UK had only a single warship available on 14 days notice. Or that Net Zero trumped (sic) all other security and policy decisions this side of the Atlantic.
A failure it is not.
Even if Trump’s objectives in the war have been achieved, the Hormuz Strait can only be opened by both the US and Iran jointly. Either can close it, but both must agree to open it.
Even if Iran surrendered unconditionally to Washington, Tehran could still negotiate terms for passage of ships through the Strait with other nations.
Though Iran isn’t an ethnonationalist state like Ukraine, as long as the Fars majority are docile towards the regime and patriotic enough towards the state, the regime can continue holding out.
But can Trump and Starmer? Both with elections soon arriving, their positions on this war may have to change. Trump and his ex-major war secretary are having problems with their senior commanders. Unsurprisingly, the latter don’t want to end up at the Hague. Both Trump’s and Hegseth’s attitude to war is puerile and unsophisticated. Trump doing a mocking impersonation of Starmer is infantile and unworthy of a statesman.
How odd that Starmer’s stance on the Iran war is popular with right wingers who will never vote for him anyway, and unpopular with left wingers who will never vote for him until he changes it.
Fair comment.
Yes, he’s in an impossible position with more admirals than ship’s. Nobody gives rats ear about two-tier Keir. Take it to the bank (if there are any left)
Of his own making. His malevolence and clear sociopathy is rebounding. He is the worst thing to happen here in my life.
Nearly 75, by the way.
So, 85% of left wing US voters view their country’s impact on the World in a negative light. Little wonder they’re the ones who voted in a barely sentient, crooked incompetent pre The Donald.
I think the quoted “left-wing voters” are British (or European), not US, and therefore subject to left-wing MSM propaganda.
Not made clear in the article. A bit of journalistic flim-flam?
Maybe, but the author was talking about the US: “The US president has a net approval rating of minus sixty five (even lower than Starmer). And when asked whether the US has had a positive or negative impact on the world in recent years, about 85% of left-wing voters say “negative”.”
Anyway – TDS is widespread in Britain and Europe because the media and political filth have spread their anti-Trump propaganda since 2016, and we now have a majority of people who cannot think for themselves.
85% of US Left wing voters have TDS – it wouldn’t matter what his policy on anything was.
Most “real” left wing voters left the Labour Party when it kicked out Corbyn.
What remains is a motley crew of “liberals”.
The sooner Labour are booted out of office the better.
Unfortunately, a likely scenario is a coalition of main stream liberal parties to keep out any radical future government from the left or right.
As an old socialist I don’t fear a “populist” UK government.
Some have proposed that we could end up with a Lab-Con Uniparty coalition. Now before you think this is unlikely, look at the Tories socialist record of the last 14 years and that it still contains Blairite scum. And look across the North Sea to Germany where in order to keep out the AfD, they have ended up with – note, not voted for – a CDU-SPD coalition of Right and Left.
Britain’s Starmer problem.
“Keir Starmer has tried to position himself as a stalwart defender of British national interests…”
Oh? And how is getting involved in the Russia/Ukraine conflict, cutting off oil, refined spirit, fertiliser supplies, sending £billions to prop up a corrupt regime, guaranteeing loans, sending military equipment when our armed forces have to do without, and harming future elations with Russia… defending British national interests?
Meanwhile a nuclear armed Iran with intercontinental missile capability, threat to Israel and the Arab States and their oil and gas supplies IS a threat to British national interests but it’s “not our war” unlike Ukraine which is.
Starmer it appears, looks for the right thing to do, then checks with “international law”, the buffoons on Labour’s backbenches, eyes up the back-stabbers with knives ready, the Imams in Labour constituencies, then does the opposite.
He is not his own man.
“I will always make decisions that are in the national interest”.
But of which nation as it has never, ever, been in the interests of the UK.
I’d rather live with higher fuel prices than radiation sickness and suspect the Liberals would too. Make no mistake, God sent President Trump 🇺🇲
See my comments above AGAIN
As Yougov polls arent worth a light, and questions asked so as to get the answers the want, hardly a credible source
“Meanwhile, Zack Polanski, Jeremy Corbyn and other popular Left-wing politicians have been repeatedly pointing out Britain’s obvious complicity in the war.’
Popular with who? Not with the general public, just popular with the hard-left 20% and 6% Muslim population, many of whom are in the same 20%.
“…80% of Labour voters,” As only 20% of the population identify as Labour voters that’s 16%.
Throughout this article Carl’s clumsy attempts to magnify numbers from polling groups that are consistently wrong is used solely to try to promote his own views as having more support than they really do.
Tedious and tendentious.
What these braindead ideolgues cannot understand is that the Shia sect running Iran is batshit crazy, and if they got nukes would nuke Israel without hesitation.
How did we get SO ignorant and depraved
see my comment above. I rest my case.
Reading some of the (brainwashed) comments here is like reading the comments section of the Torygraph. Very disappointing and alarming. You should ALL know better.
