People who criticise Islam are “racist” and it’s “completely demented” to single out Islam for criticism, former Tory minister turned podcaster Rory Stewart has said. The Telegraph‘s Michael Deacon thinks the ex-MP doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
People who criticise Islam are racist bigots. That, at least, appears to be the judgement of Rory Stewart, the great sage of centrist podcasting.
Speaking to the New Statesman this week, he said: “I think we’ve got to be very clear that this is basically racism. … All those people on social media who are talking about ‘Judeo-Christian values’, and saying, ‘I’ve got nothing against people of colour, I just don’t like Islam’, are basically racist.”
If I wanted, I could argue that this accusation of racism is itself racist. After all, it implies that Muslims all belong to the same race. Yet – to borrow the language of progressivism – this ‘erases’ the huge number of Muslims who are black, and indeed the huge number who are white. As the Muslim Council of Britain sternly made clear in 2016: “Muslims are highly ethnically diverse and not one ethnic ‘block’.”
Nonetheless, I don’t believe for a moment that Stewart meant to be racist. I just think he’s spouting delusional drivel. Islam is not a race, it’s a religion, and so criticism of it has nothing to do with the colour of its followers’ skin. Whichever colour that may be.
Stewart’s outpouring of wisdom, however, did not end there. The former Tory minister went on to explain that it’s “completely demented” to single out Islam, because people do “horrible things” in the name of other religions, too.
No doubt. The thing is, though: they don’t do terribly many of them in this country, do they? Which is probably why we don’t see “all those people on social media” fretting that Britain will suffer yet another massive terror attack by Buddhists.
Or calling for a national inquiry into Confucian grooming gangs. And, while we’re on the subject, I haven’t heard of many teachers in Batley being forced to spend the past five years in hiding after receiving death threats from militant Quakers.

And, to use his own terminology, “completely demented”. In the real world, inhabited by relatively sane people, there is a very easy way to determine the correct approach to any given problem, viz. find out what Mr Stewart’s preferred course of action might be – and then do the exact opposite.

“Racism” is really an accusation of heresy, an accusation designed to divert people’s attention from an inconvenient truth. So, what is the inconvenient truth that Rory Stewart is trying to hide from people? Everyone who’s read the Koran knows that it gives its adherent the “right” to murder innocent people who refuse to convert to Islam. By accusing people who point this out of “racism”, Rory Stewart becomes an enabler of such murders. He is complicit in such murders. In other words he’s a verminous and contemptible little sh!t.

I’m surprised that anyone here agrees with me on this, but Tim Martin has courageously banned dogs from all of his Wetherspoons pubs, despite complaints from The Dog Lobby.

We (that is, you and me) belong roughly to the same European race but to very much different peoples and Poles or Croatians are, despite their skin colour, different peoples from a different race (albeit also a European one).
White people are, as category, by-and-large a recent invention sprung from the domestic political strife in the USA. I still think it’s a good idea to reject this label: We never kept anyone first in slavery and than in legal discrimination in the so-called southern states of the USA and claiming that this doesn’t matter because of our accursed skin colour is racist.

The two English words “race” and “tribe” have been used in different ways in the past, such as the Conan-Doyle example you mentioned, with varying degrees of accuracy. There is no “celtic race”, just because it is mentioned in a Victorian novel. “Races” refer to the FIVE MAIN WORLD ETHNIC GROUPS, each with their own distinctive PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS, which do not change wherever they may go on the planet. That’s a good historical snippet to add here! I read a few years ago that the attack was actually set up by the local Irish Catholics, who hated the English Protestant settlement of Baltimore, and sent word to the Muslim pirates to come and take the English Protestants away into slavery. The Muslims released the Irish captives, and took only the 108 English Protestants, who were sold as slaves in North Africa.

I respect people having a religion and I have no desire to criticize them for having it, but the problem with Islam is that it isn’t just a religion. It is a Political and Legal system as well. So if something is Political then we must be free to criticize and disagree with it.
