Children’s Drawings Could Be Blasphemous Under Islamic Law, Councils Say
Schools have been advised by local authorities that children’s drawings could be considered blasphemous under Islamic law and music and dance may conflict with religious sensitivities. The Telegraph has more.
Schools have been advised that children’s drawings could be considered blasphemous under Islamic law.
Guidance issued to teachers by Labour councils in northern England warns that images made by pupils in art lessons may be seen as “idolatrous” under sharia.
The advice, designed to help teachers adapt to religious sensitivities, also warns that music and dance classes could be contrary to the teachings of Islam.
It adds that diversity in the classroom can be “a great source of strength”, but that schools “will want to be flexible in catering for religious difference”.
The guidance was issued by local authorities across the North of England, including Kirklees, the council area that covers Batley Grammar School.
The school became the scene of protests in 2021 after a teacher showed an image of the Prophet Mohammed in a class. The staff member remains in hiding.
The guidance document titled ‘Sharing the Journey’ says that “for some Muslim parents, sensitivities may exist in connection with the teaching of aspects of art, dance, drama, music, physical education, religious education and RSHE”.
The subject-by-subject guide to handling religious prohibitions while delivering the National Curriculum states that while Islamic culture has produced enduring abstract art, “three-dimensional figurative imagery of humans is considered idolatrous by some Muslims”.
Teachers have been advised: “It is very important that the school understands this and is also careful not to ask its students to reproduce images of Jesus, the Prophet Mohammed or other figures considered to be prophets in Islam. Some Muslim pupils may not wish to draw the human figure.”
The prohibition is based on several hadith – canonical stories about Mohammed that inform sharia – in which the Muslim prophet speaks out against images, particularly those imitating living beings.
Guidance for schools further states that “in Islam, music is traditionally limited to the human voice and non-tuneable percussion instruments as in the days of the Prophet, when they were only used in marriage ceremonies and on the battlefield”.
It notes that there is diversity of opinion on music in Islam, but that “schools should listen to any concerns, discuss the place of music in the curriculum and ensure that students are not asked to join in songs that conflict with their religious beliefs”.
The prohibition on music is not supported by all Muslims, but has been advanced in certain movements, including the Deobandism espoused by the Taliban.
Teachers are also warned that dance lessons could cause parental concerns over “physical contact between males and females”.
This advice was first created in 2022 by councils in Leeds, Calderdale, Oldham, Wakefield, and was shared by local authorities including Sefton in Lancashire, and Tameside in Greater Manchester. It has since been reissued.
Pathetic obeisance to Islam. What happened to integration? It sounds like some Muslims need to be reminded they live in Britain, where art and music are valued, and learn to fit in.

Catholics like myself – white, heterosexul, normal – are loathed.
I expect this law is the first step to eradicate Christian art, symbols, the Bible, Easter and Christianity itself – all of this ‘offends the Mohammedans’.
As a Catholic also, I find it beyond belief that Muslims could claim to be offended by portrayals of Jesus Christ, because they claim him as one of ‘their’ prophets. To them he may be merely a prophet; to me, he is the Son of God, who has inspired some of the sublimest art in existence.
As a protestant TBH I find images of christ nailed up mildly offensive and images everywhere of the Madonna mildly annoying – but as I live in Italy that’s absolutely fine by me – keywords – IT’S THEIR COUNTRY.
They started phasing out Christmas celebrations years ago by pushing the term Happy Holidays instead of Happy / Merry Christmas.
I guess our traditional way of life must be upsetting to some, bless ‘em…although as a seafaring nation, with a historic reliance on boats / ships, that particular way of life has been energetically embraced by the flotsam and detritus that the tide and the RNLI bring to our shores.
We do not have blasphemy laws in this country, do kids draw what you like.

Ah but there it is. This is not England. This is Englistan.

This means that some Muslims have (or may have) a problem with our way of life, and that some Muslims don’t have a problem with our way of life. It seems to me that those Muslims who do have a problem with our way of life might be better leaving Britain and finding a more congenial place to live.
The shocking thing here, though, is that there are “British councils” who think its their job to accommodate people who are hostile to our way of life.
Specifically Labour councils… although the Greens would have the same approach only more extreme! But I think you’re right – not only is it an appeasement of the Muslim community, it’s an appeasement of the harshest, extremist, and most fundamentalist branches of Islam eg. the type practised by the Taliban.

The proposal for a new law defining and prohibiting “Islamophobia” is a cowardly kow-towing to a very specific demographic whose vote the Labour Party know they can secure, when they’re right in thinking they’ve lost the support of all others.

Any person of non-historical British culture or religion who objects to what is being taught in British schools, should ask themselves if they have settled in the right country for them.

If a Christian pupil wants to draw a picture of the Nativity scene – will their religious difference be catered for or forbidden in case it offends one of their classmates from the Religion of Peace.™️?
The same prohibitions apply to Jews – it’s in the Bible: thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, etc.
Yet the Jews have been here for 400 years and it’s never been a problem.
In fact based on the Bible some of the Protestant sects, like the Puritans, objected to statuary and paintings of religious personages in churches, slashed painting, smashed statues and stain-glass windows. And it is still the case in Protestant chapels that there are no icons or statues.
