Starmer: Mandelson Should be Stripped of Peerage

Lord Mandelson should be stripped of his peerage, Sir Keir Starmer has said, after it emerged that the peer had leaked confidential Downing Street documents to the paedophile when he was business secretary under Gordon Brown. The Telegraph has more.

Downing Street accused the former ambassador to the US of bringing the House of Lords “into disrepute” after more files shedding light on his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein were released.

On Sunday, it emerged that Lord Mandelson had leaked confidential Downing Street documents to the paedophile when he was business secretary under Gordon Brown.

Sir Keir has faced calls from senior Tory and Labour politicians demanding that Lord Mandelson be stripped of his peerage.

His official spokesman said: “The Prime Minister has asked for this to be urgently looked at and the Prime Minister believes that Peter Mandelson should not be a member of the House of Lords or use the title.

“However, the Prime Minister does not have the power to remove it. He is calling on those in the Lords to work with the Government to modernise disciplinary measures in the House to allow for the easier removal of Lords who have brought the House into disrepute.

“The PM has asked the Cabinet Secretary to review all available information regarding Peter Mandelson’s contact with Jeffrey Epstein during his periods as a government minister and report back to him.”

The US congressional committee investigating the US government’s handling of the Epstein files is poised to summon Lord Mandelson to give evidence before it.

Sir Keir’s spokesman indicated the Prime Minister would support that. He said: “Anyone with information in relation to this matter should be prepared to share that.”

The Prime Minister sacked Lord Mandelson as ambassador to the US last year over the peer’s friendship with Epstein. Downing Street declined to say whether Sir Keir and Lord Mandelson had spoken since the new revelations emerged.

The Prime Minister is also facing pressure from Kemi Badenoch and his own Labour MPs to back a parliamentary inquiry into Lord Mandelson’s conduct.

Last night, Lord Mandelson resigned from the Labour Party after further revelations about his ties to the paedophile emerged amongst the three million files published by the US department of justice.

Starmer such a good judge of people-
put his faith in Mandelson.

‘Forensic’ is, I believe, how they used to describe him.

Thats what the media called him, no doubt expecting a laser-like focus on facts and details. What they didn’t realise is that barristers are really masters of deflection, and that facts are secondary to finding some argument that enables them to get their client off. Starmer doesn’t see the big picture, imo. He is looking at justification for every step, when he should be considering the journey as a whole.

A possible perfectly reasonable response from Mandy : “2TK should be stripped of his title as PM”. I would vote for that.

Would be good if he wasn’t the former Ambassador to the USA, wouldn’t it Two-Tier (the Stan Laurel of British politics).

Too late, Mr Starmer. You didn’t act when this man’s dealings first came to light. Now that he’s resigned and everyone’s baying for blood, you’ve decided to join in the criticism. You have form, of course. You frequently did this before becoming PM – watch which way the wind’s blowing on any particular matter, and then change your position accordingly. It beats me why anyone takes anything you say seriously.

He brokered the deal that sold Cadburys ( a jewel in our crown) to Kraft 😪

IIRC, Kraft then promptly closed much of the UK operation, despite having promised not to as a condition of the sale

He should have leaked confidential documents to the CCP. That’s officially perfectly ok.

How did he ever become Lord Sleaze of Mandelson in the first place? As vomit inducing as Lord Call Me Dave.

Why did Starmer choose Mandelslime at a time when he was busy persuading Trump to support his Chagos treachery and needed an expert to bamboozle the US? Why has he distanced himself from him now that Trump is aware of his “stupidity”?

Why shouldn’t Mandelson be prosecuted for treason over the leaking?

So far, I cannot suggest one single reason why he shouldn’t be. And that is only after listening to the BBC reports.

Lucy Connolly jailed for a tweet – Mandelson for his treason a free man.

One more example added to those who consider the British establishment is corrupt to its very core

What about Starmer being stripped of his knighthood for actions detrimental to the UK. Which would be roughly everything he’s done since leaving primary school.

I’d second that for Sadiq too. If such defective individuals can hold the honour, then it’s clearly tainted.

Knighthood used to be awarded for having done something brave. Trial by combat sounds like an interesting idea.

You’ve got to hand it to Epstein haven’t you – he’s done so many people up like kippers, even from beyond the grave. I wonder how much is *actually* true and how much is circumstantial, that he was saving to use for future ‘favours’…

I am no great fan of Mandelson but when it comes to ‘bringing the House of Lords “into disrepute”’, a range of uniparty prime ministers have done rather well in that direction by loading the establishment with dubious appointees.
