Police Federation Boss Was Wrongly Sacked After Speaking to Press in ‘Racism’ Row, Court Finds
The former head of the Metropolitan Police Federation, who was sacked after giving an interview to the press while standing up for rank and file officers in a ‘racism’ row, was unlawfully treated, the High Court has ruled. The Telegraph has the story.
Rick Prior was suspended in October 2024 after warning that his members were increasingly nervous about challenging people from some ethnic minorities for fear of being labelled racist.
He was then sacked for comments he made in the Telegraph in which he complained about his treatment.
Richard Cooke, a police colleague in the West Midlands, was also suspended after posting a comment online disputing suggestions that his force was “institutionally racist”.
The High Court has now ruled that the Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) – the statutory association for police staff – acted unfairly in its treatment of both officers.
The court found both suspensions were unlawful and a breach of their Article 10 right to freedom of expression.
The judges stressed that as an elected representative, Prior had the right to comment on matters of public interest such as race relations, policing standards and officer confidence.
Prior was suspended after he gave a television interview warning that his members were increasingly worried about using force for fear of becoming the subject of a vexatious racism complaint.
His comments followed a number of high-profile incidents, including a constable being convicted of assault after challenging a woman who refused to show a valid bus ticket.
The conviction was quashed on appeal, but Prior, who was elected to represent 30,000 officers across London, said that such incidents were eroding his members’ confidence.
He explained: “There seems to be an assumption of racism right from the off, particularly when it’s a white officer and a member of the public from a minority ethnic community.
“And it almost seems as if the onus is then on the police officer to prove that the interaction wasn’t racist.”
The following day, the PFEW suspended him from his role and barred him from standing in the upcoming election, claiming the comments were “discriminatory in nature”.
Prior subsequently gave an interview to the Telegraph, complaining he would have been treated more fairly in North Korea. He was then promptly sacked.
Meanwhile, Cooke was similarly suspended by the PFEW when he rejected claims that racism was widespread among his colleagues in West Midlands Police.

It confirms that suspension must never be used casually or as a tool of ideological conformity, particularly where speech on matters of public interest is concerned.
The ruling strengthens protections for all workers, representatives and office holders who face disciplinary action for expressing lawful but controversial views – and sends a clear message that casual bias and echo-chamber thinking come at a legal cost.
The PFEW called the judgment “flawed” and said it intends to appeal.

They should be reinstated, financially compensated and continue to question their superiors who lack common sense and are divorced from reality.

This is deeply worrying, as it seems to be part of an ideological framework, created by the anglophobes and anti-whitists, to racially subordinate white people to non-whites.

Apparently it’s a charity based in an incredibly luxurious headquarters in Surrey. How on earth do the police need to spend so much money on a committee and why can non police sack policemen?
Hopefully they will lose their appeal. When they do, as I am sure they believe in the rule of law they will take appropriate action regarding the key decision makers and also revise their policies in line with the law. DS should follow up on this and report back – or Lord TY should try to persuade his friends in the MSM to do so, and stick it on the front page “One year on from acting unlawfully, nothing has changed…”
