Trump Blasts Britain’s “Catastrophic” North Sea Oil and Gas Curbs as He Stokes Feud With Starmer
Donald Trump lashed out at Britain’s “catastrophic” North Sea oil and gas curbs today in a speech at the World Economic Forum gathering in Davos as he stoked his mounting feud with Sir Keir Starmer. The Mail has more.
The US President condemned the UK for failing to exploit energy resources as he gave a rambling speech at Davos.
Launching a slew of barbs at long-standing Nato allies, Trump branded parts of Europe “unrecognisable”. He swiped that his audience in the Swiss resort would be speaking German “with a bit of Japanese” if America had not won the Second World War.
However, Mr Trump also admitted for the first time that he will not use military force to seize Greenland – in a concession that will come as a huge relief to America’s partners. “You can say yes and we’ll be grateful or you can say no and we will remember,” he said on his push for the strategic island.
The comments came after Keir Starmer launched his most direct attack on Trump yet – accusing him of turning against the Chagos deal as part of his campaign to get Greenland.
At a tense PMQs, Sir Keir said the US President had the “express” intention of forcing the UK to “yield” to his grab for Danish territory.
“He wants me to yield on my position and I’m not going to do so,” Sir Keir said.
Transatlantic relations are heading for new lows amid the high-stakes wrangling between Nato allies, which has seen Mr Trump threaten to slap trade tariffs on those who reject his ambitions.
Sir Keir explicitly linked American anger over the Chagos Islands deal to the row over Greenland.
He told the Commons Trump’s condemnation of the handover to Mauritius was “different from his previous words” – highlighting that the US administration warmly welcomed the agreement last year.
He said Trump – who arrived in Davos this afternoon ready for a showdown with furious European leaders – had “the express purpose of putting pressure on me and Britain in relation to my values and principles on the future of Greenland”.
Worth reading in full.
Stop Press: Donald Trump has agreed a “forever” deal on Greenland reportedly involving US sovereignty over “small pockets of land for US bases”, according to the Mail. As a result the US President scrapped tariffs on eight European countries as he announced the agreement with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Wednesday evening. He told CNBC that NATO “are going to be involved in the Golden Dome, and they’re going to be involved in mineral rights, and so are we”.

I just saw the snippet where he talked about the Chinese using coal to make wind turbines and selling them to “stupid people”. Hilarious.
I watched every blissful minute. The best bit was all of it. You’ll own what you’ve earned and be happy – now that’s more like it. Demolish the cult of net zero and let us have our lives back.
Whatever one’s opinion is on The Donald’s efforts to get Greenland, I think what has got the usual suspects in such a tizzy is that here we have a leader explicitly doing what he thinks will benefit his country, not doing whatever will benefit the global elite.
They just can’t get their little heads around such a thing.
It’s a weird concept and it blows their minds.
Hysterical to watch.
I can’t wait to see the body language on display when The Donald and 2TK next meet face to face. Hopefully, Starmer will try to smarm up to DJT in his normal ass-lickin’ way and then Trump will immediately flick him off like the insignificant little piece of dirty fluff that he is. I can but pray.
I reckon that he’s trying to get everyone and especially the Danes to keep repeating:
“It’s not up to us. Only the Greenlanders can make this choice.”
Once this is accepted as the rule and the only rule he will make an offer to make every Greenlander who supports joining the US much richer than they currently are… and then say to the Danes “It’s not up to you. Let the Greenlanders choose”.
If that does not work we can expect a not so subtle shift to: “Let the Chagossians and Ukrainians choose”.
I’ve spotted a change in the comments system.
I usually use single quotes instead of double quotes. (See https://editorsmanual.com/articles/single-vs-double-quotation-marks/). The comments system now does not like them. The occasional apostrophe seems OK. How it decides whether the text between two apostrophes is a (now) illegal quote or just two apostrophes is not clear to me.
WordPress plugin upgrade with little or no testing is my guess.
Can’t seem to post anything with an attachment either, and the page keeps refreshing if you click comment instead of pulling up the post editor window?
I’m not able to post anything within single OR double quotes
Dammit. I thought I’d nailed it.
I wrote my comment about Trump above using single quote marks where appropriate. Hitting submit resulted in a brief pause and then a return to the editor box – with no error message.
On changing the quote marks to double quotes the comments submitted as previously usual.
Ah well. Maybe a mod will read this and push the report up the chain.
I am trying to reply to another comment on this page and it just doesn’t respond to “post comment”.
My comment with a link to Substack could not be posted yesterday. I tried several times
Interesting pic… some Greenland/USA history in addition to Trumps speech to the WEF sheep.
“scrapped tariffs”? dont you mean “scrapped his threatened additional tariffs”?
Thank God for Trump.
I am so looking forward to Trump thoroughly humiliating Two-Tier again over his double-standard “values and principles” when it comes to Greenland and Chagos.
