As ‘Net’ Migration Drops to Zero Don’t Be Fooled

Net immigration is headed to zero this year – but don’t be fooled, says Alp Mehmet in the Telegraph. Inward migration from poorer countries is still eye-wateringly high. The meaningless ‘net’ figure is only going down because so many young Brits are fleeing Starmer’s Britain. Here’s an excerpt.

The rhetoric coming thick and fast at the moment is that a supposed forthcoming collapse in immigration will have devastating consequences for the public finances. In 2026 we could, apparently, even see ‘net negative’ migration.

But despite the dire warnings about such a scenario from the Left-leaning Resolution Foundation and others, one imagines such news will be music to the ears of the many members of the public who have consistently told pollsters that they want migration to be much lower – a Merlin Strategy poll last year that found 46% of voters want migration to be zero or less.

Yet we need to be honest about this issue. Migration is not under control, both legal and illegal. Net migration has come down primarily because working-age Britons and EU nationals are fleeing this country in droves. Total immigration is still eye-wateringly high: up to the year ending June 2025, the ONS estimated that 898,000 people settled in Britain. And over the whole of last year, 41,000 people made it to the UK in small boats across the Channel. All of them will have had to be housed, registered with GPs, fed and watered and much more. Our infrastructure is bursting at the seams as it struggles to cope.

Last year’s net figure of 204,000 was only sharply lower than the previous 12 months because an estimated 693,000 people emigrated. The largest share of those leaving this country in 2025 were working age Britons under the age of 45. If that trend continued, it certainly would be a disaster for the Treasury. We cannot sustain a situation where close to three-quarters of a million taxpayers are upping sticks for a better life elsewhere.

Meanwhile, nearly half of all social housing in London is occupied by foreign-born heads of household. And the NHS has reportedly earmarked £73 million to be spent on translation services. As for the population boom we are projected to experience, it will require more than two million new homes to be built in a decade. Where is the money coming from? How would this in any way contribute to the Exchequer in the long run?

‘Net zero’ migration in itself is a pointless term – and goal – if all we are doing is importing millions of people every decade – whose lifetime cost could be in the billions – while losing our best and brightest to other countries.

Excellent that this kind of thing is getting into the MSM. Will the Telegraph put its full weight of support behind the only political party remotely likely to address this issue – Reform? Or will they continue to support their beloved Tories in the hope that it will all be different this time?

I has my doubts about Zia Yusuf but watching him on GB News he does seem to be a good man. Laila Cunningham is just who we need to get rid of Sir Knife Crime. But Zahawi is a nasty slimeball of a man who has commited tax fraud and has been involved in dodgy Kurdish oil trading, and turns nasty if challenged.

The fact that we are being warned about Third World Immigration by a Turkish Muslim Cypriot who could not speak English when he first arrived induces a kind of “cognitive dissonance”.

May I add that, though Mehmet (a variation of Mohammed) says he is Chairman of Migration Watch, he neglects to mention that Migration Watch was founded by English career diplomat Sir Andrew Green and Professor David Coleman of Oxford University. It was Lord Green who fought tirelessly for twenty years to raise awareness of the dangers of mass immigration to the UK, and campaigned to Abolish the Commonwealth Voting Rights in British elections, in order to restrict voting to British Citizens, instead of the citizens of about 90 foreign countries, as still continues to this day.

Lord Green was for 12 years a board member of Christian Solidarity Worldwide (a human rights organisation which speaks for Christians and others around the world who are suffering persecution for their religious beliefs).

And he is still fighting to raise awareness in the House of Lords, even at the venerable age of 84. May God bless him for a Christian Warrior!

They get an easier ride because it’s harder to play the race card against them – though they do get described as “coconuts” (non white on the outside, white on the inside).

What a strange attack.

So people with ‘foreign’ names cannot help us protect our heritage? Ben Habib ?

I’ve met and worked with Alp Mehmet. He is a thoroughly decent man and his motives are impeccable. Your criticism of him is unworthy and poorly judged.

It sounds like you want him to acknowledge Lord Green in every public utterance.

Of course he couldn’t speak English when he arrived. He was 8yrs old!🤦‍♀️ As a self-confessed racist it must really stick in your craw that many with migration backgrounds have successfully integrated into British culture, contribute to society ( more than many natives ) and have embraced their adopted country, therefore becoming true patriots ( again, more than many native, white British oikophobes ).

For me the real question is not the economics but the fact that culturally England is being deliberately destroyed.

That cannot be forgiven.

How about our country is being culturally destroyed, and we are paying for it.

‘£73 million to be spent on translation services’ – totemic of a society where middle management calls the shots and has got its priorities totally wrong.
