Met Office Head’s Fake Heatwave Deaths Claim
Richard Betts, Head of Climate Impacts Research at the Met Office, was wheeled out on Channel 4 News yesterday to promote its dubious ‘hottest year evah in UK’ claim. His rather pathetic attempts to scare the public included ludicrous claims about plants and insects being confused and glaciers melting! Yes, Richard, glaciers have been melting for 200 years – were our SUVs the cause in 1800 as well?
But I cannot let him get away with one particularly outrageous claim, at about one minute in:
We had a run of three major heatwaves in the UK, which caused a lot of people to die sadly. Over 1,500 people died from heat related causes alone in the summer and about three-quarters of those probably would not have died without extra supercharging of the heatwave due to climate change.
There is absolutely no evidence to back any of this up. Similar claims in previous years have always originated from fraudulent computer models, completely disproven by the actual data.
The Office for National Statistics, ONS, carried out a full analysis after the 2022 heatwave, which found that the heatwave did not increase death rates at all. What it said was that deaths may have been brought forward by a few days on the hottest days, but quickly dipped below average on the days after. Over the period as a whole death rates were normal.
In short, people who were dying anyway may have died a couple of days or so prematurely. The heatwave did not kill them any more than an April shower or a cold winter’s day could have done.
I have been keeping tabs on this topic since the Guardian claimed in June that 600 would die from the heat that month. The table below is compiled from ONS weekly registration of deaths data. (Bear in mind that registration is around a week after the date of death.) As weekly registrations are affected by bank holidays, I have calculated averages per working day, i.e. excluding bank holidays.
There is a little blip upwards in Week 18 (week ending May 2nd), which almost certainly is a catching up of the backlog that built up over Easter, and also another blip up in Week 35, which included the August bank holiday – probably extra registrations crammed into the four-day week.
But the overall trend is unmistakeable. From winter onwards, there is a steady uninterrupted decline in daily deaths, until they resume their upward trend in autumn.
There is no sign at all of Betts’s fake “1,500 deaths” during the summer. On the contrary, as temperatures rose, deaths declined. To pretend otherwise is immoral and dishonest. In summer, many fewer die than in spring and autumn, never mind winter. Heat does not kill, Richard – cold does.
We are now very familiar with the politicisation of the Met Office. But this latest contribution from one of its most senior ‘scientists’ goes beyond the pale.
What Betts said was not only unsubstantiated and unscientific. It was an abuse of the trust that for years we have all put in the Met Office, which has for so long stood for scientific integrity, honesty and public service. It is a stain on the reputation of all those who once made the Met Office the envy of the world and a beacon of science.
If anybody needs any further convincing about this perversion of science, just listen to Richard Betts’s words. Twice he tells us we must give up fossil fuels.
Sorry, Richard, but it is not your job, or the Met Office’s, to tell us what we can and cannot do.
You have thoroughly demeaned your self and destroyed your reputation.

It’s good to see that the fear is being cranked up again. Nothing changes, not even the weather.
This character has studied metereolgy at Birmingham and Reading universities and is a professor at Exter. He has worked on climate modelling since 1992, all of which have failed to predict empirical results. What does it say about the quality of education at these so called centres of academic excellence? Centres for charlatans and subversives is my conclusion.
What it tells us is they are colleges of theology not science.
In which there are many hilarious comments. One that caught my eye was this:
Betts gave up on science 5 years ago when he started defending Extinction Rebellion lawbreakers in court as an ‘expert witness’. He’s no more than a witch doctor peddling pseudoscience now in service of the eco-communist Net Zero doctrine.

A wise man said, putting climate in front of scientist is like putting witch in front of doctor.
Another state-sponsored lackey for Convenient Untruth.
Thank you for this report, Paul. Does make one wonder what the control file on this person contains.
Would the DS consider systematically sending FOIA requests for these sorts of individuals’ pay packets, benefits, and pension contributions?
And then of course kindly publishing them. Might trigger the sort of revulsion needed to goad the country into action.
Global Warming Theory actually states that we will get a little bit more warming at night and in winter. It does not say we will get more heatwaves. But in any case, many more people die from cold than from heat, so that in a warmer world less people will die, not more.
What it suggests is that he is financially affluent, with at least two relatively secure jobs – one at Exeter University and another local one at the Met Office! At least his interests (in the monetary context) have been declared.
Climate change – is a retroactive analysis of long-term meteorological data, averaged to see if there is a trend.
Climate and climate change are NOT tangible meteorological phenomena, they are derivations from data and cannot be revealed in real time. In that sense they do not exist except as a mathematical calculation.
Since climate is derived from weather data, it cannot be a cause of weather; it cannot “supercharge” a heatwave.
That this clown is spouting this absurd, deceitful drivel tells us all we need to know about him and his employers and the entire congregation of the Climatism religion.
Weather, on the other hand, is a manifestation of tangible phenomena, which can be observed, which is changeable.
“was an abuse of the trust that for years we have all put in the Met Office, which has for so long stood for scientific integrity, honesty and public service.”
With all due respect Mr Homewood the Met Office have been a laughing stock for many, many years and even my BBC loving associates consider the organisation to be a poor joke. The rubbish spouted by Betts simply confirms this opinion.
The Met Office lost any trust I had in it years ago, these shenanigans just entrench my view that it is a political organisation and should be ignored.
All of us in our echo chamber know that AGW is the greatest fraud inflicted upon mankind. A fraud that is costing the Western world money, lives and potentially our very existence. What I can’t understand is how we know there is so much evidence out there to prove it is fake but they still get away with it. Our voices are not heard and nobody seems able to show the world that the king has no clothes. How are people not able to see through Miliband, Thunberg and all of the other peddlers?
Cold is actually more of a problem than heat, which is one of the reasons why the death rate is higher in winter than in summer. But the climate scammers love to go on about heatwaves.
It’s not just the Met Office. The Medical Industry has been making the same claims. You would think that looking at their patients might keep them in touch with reality, but Climate Change is too important for that!
He should be prosecuted for fearmongering for the government.
And this man is a professor? Another win for academia
Paul, was it not possible to overlay the 2025
bars on top of the 2024 figures (in a darker colour) to show the annual change trend?
Hes pissing in the wind. Humans will always prefer to be warm than cold.
And the deaths in the winter from fuel poverty?
Thanks to the left, virtually every organisation has now been co-opted into spreading “the message”. When I make this point to my friends who still watch the BBC et al, they say “Oh yes, we know they have a bias”. But the simple fact is, like poison, you cannot spot 90% of it. There is really no safe level of engagement with the msm or interest groups.
