The Marvellous Miseries of Multiculturalism
The writer is in Australia.
I start this first column of the new year with the heavy heart that I am sure all our readers have for the families of the victims of the horrific mass-murders on Bondi Beach just before Christmas. And let us not deal in the usual Labour Party euphemisms, misdirecting abstractions and Kumbaya platitudes. This was the deliberate attempt to murder Jews, by Islamic extremists, done solely because they wanted to kill Jews. And they did, with the odd non-Jewish bystander thrown in. That makes Australia, outside of Israel itself, the country where the most Jews have been murdered in a single incident since the Second World War. Embarrassed? And all this happened after (let’s be blunt and truthful) Labour governments around Australia allowed radical Islamic clerics to preach their poison. And after they (with a bit of help from the courts) allowed pro-Palestinian protesters to shut down the Sydney harbour bridge – when no sane person believes an anti-Covid lockdown protest would ever have been allowed to do that. And after this country was the only one on earth to let in large numbers of Gaza people, the very same people who have been subjected for years, both at school and in their media, to the most vile anti-Jewish indoctrination imaginable. Nor is there any remotely sane comparison to be made of Islamic terrorism to ‘far-Right, neo-Nazi’ extremism – the go-to comparison of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his Cabinet. Go and count up whether Islamic terrorists or neo-Nazis have caused more deaths in Australia. Or Britain. Or anywhere in the last 50 years. The death count for each isn’t in the same galaxy, let alone solar system or postcode. In fact, have a look at the statistics on mass murders motivated by religion around the developed world these past few decades. One religion is the cause of well over 90% of all these myriad murders – more than all other religions put together and multiplied by your favourite integer. And you know which religion it is. I know which one. And so do the politicians.
It gets worse. You see there is good reason to be ashamed of this country that I came to in 2005. That’s because it is simply a fact, today in 2026, that many Jewish Australians now feel safer in Israel than they do here in Australia. And yes, I have Jewish friends who are leaving here to move to Israel in the name of their family’s safety. Who can blame them because that is a highly defensible call. Still, let that sink in and then feel the seething anger I feel for what the political caste in this country has done to the place over the last 40 years. Of course, this Albanese Government has been the worst. But let’s not forget that Coalition governments also ran huge incoming immigration programmes with little thought of assimilation or selectivity, all in the name of some feel-good, trite notion of multiculturalism.
And this brings me to the topic of multiculturalism. As I have said in past columns, it has been a massive failure. Be clear though. I don’t mean that sane immigration that accepts people with specific skills to offer, that refuses to deal in doling out welfare to new arrivals and that aggressively insists on assimilation has been a failure. That works. Indeed, my wife and I are beneficiaries of that sort of immigration. No, what is and has been a disastrous failure is this progressive-Left, vague-and-amorphous warm fuzzy known as ‘multiculturalism’. You see, multiculturalism deals in either untruths or patently unwise outcomes. The untruth is that all cultures are equal. In fact, they simply are not. Judeo-Christian Western culture has delivered the freest, wealthiest societies in human history, ones that gave birth to the industrial revolution and the scientific worldview. In significant part that was due to the Enlightenment (and in my view the Scottish Hume-Smith variant more so than the French Rousseau-Voltaire one). Cultures that kill or scare witless those deemed apostates have, shall we say, not done so well. Cultures that downplay curiosity and open debate and disagreement in favour of enforced orthodoxy don’t deliver those either. One of the worst things to happen to the anglosphere has been the progressive cancer from within that has eaten away at our patriotism (in the sense of love of country) and our understanding of the net-benefit greatness of our heritage, imposing a sort of hairshirt ‘only focus on our faults’ worldview. In short, our schools and universities have been captured (and in my time here Coalition governments have done nada, nothing, zero about it – in fact, unis got worse every single year of the nine years of Liberal (conservative) Prime Ministers).
And this brings me to the bluntly stated claims of New South Wales Premier Chris Minns. In effect, late last year he said that the reason we Australians can’t have freedom of speech of the sort he said you see in the US is because Australia wants to hold together a multicultural community. So the obvious inference is that Minns thinks multiculturalism comes at the cost of free speech. Or at least it eats into our scope to speak freely, to criticise and even to point out actual true facts about the world (think here of our woeful, Coalition-appointed eSafety Commissioner who tried to shut down a video of an actual attack by a Muslim extremist on a Christian Bishop). And in a way Premier Minns is correct. If (and do note the ‘if’) we are going to turn Australia into a latter-day Beirut or Lebanon, a country of tribes and competing religious blocks, then words can and will set off violent confrontations and killings. So we would then have to limit speech. And we would have to characterise open, honest criticisms of religious outlooks as ‘racist abuse’ because we would have created Beirut-style ghettos of incompatibility. Free speech is being attacked in this country because our political caste has failed us. Its members are protecting their own arses. ‘Holding together a multicultural community’, Premier Minns ultimate good, is not worth the paper it shouldn’t have been written on. Open criticism. Free speech of the sort Australians enjoyed for decades if not a century. Thick skins. A ‘names can never hurt me’ resilience. These and more are all being sacrificed by today’s political failures, the people who have brought us to where we are. It’s time for change. We need a massive cut in immigration. We need to stop propping up a Ponzi scheme university sector. We need assimilation. But Lord knows it would be miracle to expect this from the Coalition.

For the purposes of those who seek to exercise ever more power over us, it has been a roaring success.
If they’re actually seeking to exercise ever more power over us and are not just trying to save their great experiment by using whatever band-aid may be at their disposal to patch the all the bleeding wounds in the hope that the monstrosity – Frankenstein’s culture, so to say – will eventually heal and prove to be able to survive instead of howling frighteningly while tearing itself to shreds.
… maybe a bit dark, but I had the idea and wanted to put it into words …
Whatever the motivation- and all we can do is speculate- it looks pretty dark
If think they’re aware that the outcome of their blindly optimistic policies has been an unmitigated disaster. Partially, they’re probably simply in denial about this, especially the (in Germany usually Green) champagne multiculturate who aren’t personally affected by the consequences. Partially, they’re probably hoping that they can hold the line until the last “righ-wing extremist” aka “person who remembers the time before 9/11” has died by ever more draconian social control and that the younger generation will accept getting murdered by Islamists as unavoidable accidents of life which sometimes just happen. Rhey’ve meanwhile probably also realized that this is very likely not going to work and that they’re rearrangeing the sightseer’s chairs on Mt. St Helens in early May 1980 while telling themselves “It will not explode! It will not explode! It has never exploded so far!” and all the dials are steadily creeping into the red. News from New Years Eve in German cities have just started to roll in — large aggregations of “drunk young men with a migrant background” mostly peacefully attacking police and ambulances with fireworks, torching buildings and creating general mayhem. Multikulti¹ as usual. ¹ Slightly dated cutesy abbreviation for mulitulturelle Gesellschaft (multicultural society) which… Read more »
Yes, aware and either in denial (the deluded “be kind” brigade) or don’t care. I guess people with power just think they can avoid negative consequences of their actions – and often this is true.
I think it’s in denial because personally not yet much affected, living in suburbs, not yet in gated communities, shop “locally”, that is, never go into cities, don’t use public transport, possibly, children in private education and madly seeking for a way out which simply cannot be found, the seriously dictatorial Be Kind! brigade belonging to the second group.
Recent example of that: French children bullied by Muslims in school being told that they should Conquer them with love by their teachers. In other words, that they must not ever dream of defending themselves or that anybody else would. The silent majority must be forced to remain silent, otherwise, Really Bad Stuff™ is going to happen.
True, though I do know people who live in multicultural London who are equally deluded, though it tends not to be in the very poorest parts that they live.
Someone I know was mugged for his bike on Hackney Downs by a group of youths. He had considered taking a route to avoid them but as they were black he decided not to as doing so would have been racist. I’ve not had the heart to ask him whether the incident has changed his views on anything in this area. I would certainly have either avoided them (or any other colour group of youths unless they were obviously harmless e.g. hippy looking people or Japanese) or cycled fast and looked mad enough, depending on what mood I was in.
I’ve occasionally been in Deptford for concerts and it transpired to me that this is probably not the best place to be for a white person favouring very short haircuts 🙂 aka I was positively the only guy who wasn’t black in the streets at that time and it didn’t look like a very prosperous neighbourhood. OTOH, chutzpah usually works and always works better than appearing frightened.
Agreed.
I have rarely if ever felt unsafe in a whole area – it has always been just in passing because of specific people or groups. But then I kind of know where to avoid.
Parts of Islington on my ride home from work were dodgy, but that was just small areas as London is so mixed, at least Islington is. Boris Johnson lived in a big nice house not far from really awful estates full or feral youths.
Weitestgehend friedlich, a literal translation of mostly peaceful, has meanwhile been established as official description of the events of this night (which included fire service personnel needing police protection against organized attacks from “arabic and turkish looking men” (quote from German police union) while quelling fires in Berlin).
I knew an American at uni (early 80s) who had done some ambulance driving in LA. He carried a gun as they used to get attacked in the less salubrious areas.
Scenes like this didn’t occur in Germany prior to Merkel’s opening of the borders for an unlimited stream of Syrian refugees¹ in 2015.
¹ As these people people cannot return to Syria because it’s totally ruined and Just Not Safe™ (according to SPD politicians), they’re meanwhile having large public demonstrations in Germany to celebrate the fall of Assad and also usually holiday there. Roughly 50% (numbers vary between sources) have never done anything save getting benefits. There’s no child benefit cap in Germany and hence, large families can easily get an income that’s out of reach for working Germans in this way.
Last time I was in Germany a German friend (or ex friend) we were staying with was talking up the policy of some South American country (I forget which one) where the government actively encouraged racial mixing in order to produce a new population of coffee coloured people and remove the “problem of racism”. We’ve not seen them since, and won’t do, ever.
You don’t just need a massive cut in immigration, you need a massive programme of deportation of the people who are causing the problems.
At last, an honest man saying it as it is, with the key message..
”So the obvious inference is that Minns thinks multiculturalism comes at the cost of free speech”.
A long list of UK names can easily replace “Minns”(and not just in the HoC&L).
If all Muslims were Sufi, there would not be a problem. They are peaceable people. The trouble is, they are a minority. Oz and UK are in a similar position: we have opened our doors, welcomed and made repeated excuses for people who hate us and our way of life and want to destroy us, if only through outbreeding. Surely, the time has come to say, “no more Muslim immigrants for any reason”.
Minns is making a specious argument because there’s freedom of speech in the USA and it’s certainly as multicultural as any other Western society, if not more.
Very good point
If there was ever a reminder to not tar entire groups of people with the same brush it’s this lady. You wouldn’t think she’s Muslim to hear her talk, and the fact she’s with Reform I think says a great deal about her values, loyalties and integrity;
”God, I love this! Laila Cunningham is BRUTAL about Labour’s secret cavorting with Pakistani voters. She is a Muslim who will not stand for anything anti-British. And she has my support – this is about culture & assimilation.”

The Globalists decided on a policy of “divide and conquer” a very long time ago.
Trump may save America. I fear that the rest of the Anglosphere is beyond salvation and there is nowhere to go to escape the civil wars which are coming.
“We need a massive cut in immigration.”
No. A complete reversal of migration with the vast majority of those that have arrived in the last 10 years, at least, being sent back.
“We need to stop propping up a Ponzi scheme university sector. We need assimilation.”
No. We do not need assimilation, because that still allows for migrants to rock up, and will be corrupted by migrants and lawyers so that it will always be the non Muslims that will be made to assimilate with the migrants, as is happening.
Even taking the best from developing countries is wrong and removes the responsibility of native industries to train local people, while also ‘draining’ a developing country of it’s talent, thus scuppering any chance that country has of improving. Then foreign aid will keep being sent.
