Will Labour Ban Christmas Carols Next?

If Christmas songs fall foul of the ‘banter ban’ under Labour’s new employment rights law, Christmas carols are even more likely to. Because of their abject failure to adhere to neo-Marxist dogma, traditional Christmas carols are surely very liable to censure for causing offence in the workplace.

A publican who receives a request from a local group of carol singers to come to his or her pub over Christmas would therefore be advised to conduct a risk assessment on the following carols in particular:

‘Hark the Herald Angels Sing’, ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’, ‘O Come, All Ye Faithful’ and ‘In the Bleak Mid-winter’.

This stanza in ‘In the Bleak Mid-winter’, with its clear statement of the divinity of Christ, could be perceived as Islamophobic:

Our God, heaven cannot hold Him
Nor earth sustain;
Heaven and earth shall flee away
When He comes to reign:
In the bleak mid-winter
A stable-place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty,
Jesus Christ.

‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’ was banned by a vicar in 2008 because “it did not represent the modern-day reality of the war-torn city”. But under the new workplace regime, this stanza, with its clear statement that human beings are sinful, could well attract a complaint from a member of staff that it had damaged his or her self-esteem:

O holy Child of Bethlehem,
Descend to us, we pray;
Cast out our sin, and enter in,
Be born to us today.
We hear the Christmas angels
The great glad tidings tell:
O come to us, abide with us,
Our Lord Emmanuel.

‘Hark the Herald’ is even more liable than ‘In the Bleak Mid-winter’ to the offence of Islamophobia. This stanza categorically contradicts the Koran’s teaching that Jesus Christ was not God Incarnate:

Christ, by highest heaven adored,
Christ, the everlasting Lord:
Late in time behold Him come,
Offspring of a Virgin’s womb.
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see,
Hail the incarnate Deity!
Pleased as man with man to dwell,
Jesus our Immanuel.

The reference to the “offspring of a Virgin’s womb” might also be perceived as homophobic. By drawing attention to the uniqueness of Jesus’s birth, it would appear to be suggesting that heterosexuality is the norm in human reproduction.

And what about this stanza in ‘In the Bleak Mid-winter’, with its failure to use gender-neutral language about Mary’s maternity?

Angels and archangels
May have gathered there,
Cherubim and seraphim
Thronged the air,
But only His mother
In her maiden bliss,
Worshipped the Beloved
With a kiss.

Transphobic perhaps?

But arguably ‘O Come, All Ye Faithful’ is liable to cause the most offence because it packs such a powerful punch for countercultural Christian truth in this stanza in particular:

God of God, Light of Light,
Lo! He abhors not the Virgin’s womb;
Very God, begotten not created: O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

According to the Telegraph’report last Sunday on the threat to Christmas singalongs:

Toby Young, General Secretary of the Free Speech Union, said he had previously warned that the ‘banter ban’ would lead to the “policing of harmless fun in pubs, bars and restaurants, giving the scolds and finger-waggers another pretext to stop people enjoying themselves”.

He added: “The Government didn’t listen, insisting we were being alarmist, but a ban on Christmas music and carol singing will be the least of it. Prepare to live in a country in which every hospitality venue is a micro-managed ‘safe space’, overseen by lanyard-wearing banter bouncers. Welcome to Starmer’s Britain.”

It is important not to underestimate how offensive traditional Christmas carols could be to people determined to be offended for their ‘protected characteristics’. So, any publican wanting to take the risk of carol singing in his or her pub would be well advised to give themselves FSU membership as a Christmas present.

Julian Mann, a former Church of England vicar, is an evangelical journalist based in Lancashire.

1) Christmas is a complete fraud, celebrating The Fake Virgin Birth, witnessed only by the Impostor Goddess herself, who told her LIES to the gospel writers in different versions. The adult Jesus himself never mentioned anything about The Fake Virgin Birth, nor the Trinity, nor told people to worship Mary, nor said he was Almighty God. 2) Jesus the Forerunner and his non-identical TWIN BROTHER John the Baptist The True Christ were born to THEIR MOTHER ELIZABETH at Ein Karem in September, 2000 years ago. 3) Newborn Jesus was STOLEN BY THE IMPOSTOR MARY, who played midwife, deceived and drugged Elizabeth in childbirth, and smuggled the stolen child SEVEN MILES AWAY to Bethlehem, so she could claim he was born in the city of David. 4) That was only one of her many heinous atrocities, as she deceived the world for 2000 years into worshipping her and her Stolen Child, instead of Almighty God, and pushed The True Christ John the Baptist into the background for 2000 years. 5) The Time of Evil is Over. Comes the Time of Joy, Justice, Truth and Rescue of All Good Souls and Repentant Sinners, for WE ARE REDEEMED, and NO ONE HAS THE… Read more »

Dear Heretic, You have chosen your moment to cause maximum upset among us who are about to celebrate the incarnation of the Son of God, Jesus Christ. We have heard your views before, but I think the time has come for you to come clean and enlighten us further. You have rejected the biblical narrative of the birth of Jesus as being unreliable and based only, you claim, on what Mary said as related in the Gospels. Perhaps you could answer a few questions which spring to mind about your version of events: On which primary sources are you basing your theory? Who first outlined the story of the switching of Jesus and John the Baptist at birth? How do you know that he or she is a reliable source? When did the story first appear in print, or is it based on an oral tradition? You call yourself a heretic, so Is there a name for this heresy? You are adamant that the Church of England is Protestant, but your version of events is not accepted by any of the mainstream denominations, with which I am very familiar. I am not sure if you would accept my good wishes… Read more »

I couldn’t agree more, but philosophically speaking, who really is this idolater? A gnostic or a Mandaean? Something else?
Screening previous entries, I thought for a moment that he shared some of the top Nazis’ pagan, occultist and mystical ideas, but in the end I concluded that he was an inadequate, little guy with narcissistic tendencies, desperately seeking attention. As you say, just ignore him.

Really?? I was thinking he must be related to one of yous, such is your level of tolerance in giving him an obvious free pass.
Does harassment and defamation also fall within your ever-moving parameters of what constitutes ‘free speech’? Because I’ll bet I’m also on your radar but do show me an example of when I’ve ever demonstrated such behaviour towards a fellow poster.

Freedom of speech is absolutely, in my opinion. We free speech advocates must allow the noisy weirdos to sound off too. It shows that we really do value freedom of views even if we disagree. And absolute free speech means we can absolutely disrespect and disavow their arguments!
Happy Christmas to all dissidents in the Sceptic community.

And thanks to Daily Sceptic team for all their hard work. Thoroughly enjoyed this site since it opened during the lockdown mental derangenent. 👍

I’m not spoiling any “joyous and fun occasion”. Here’s what I said at the end:

Yes, dear Heretic,

I can understand your revulsion to the cult of Mary, but it’s high time you provide evidence in support of your repeated assertions.

When John was in prison, he sent word to Jesus by his disciples. You can read Jesus’ response in Matthew 11: the blind see, the lame walk, levers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised and the poor receive the good news (the hallmarks of Messiah from Isaiah 61).

If that were the end of it, then I might have some sympathy with your position. But these things – miracles, healings, demons cast out – continue to happen to this day through the authority of the name of Jesus. As Saul of Tarsus was turned around by a heavenly vision, these are days when many from Muslim backgrounds continue to see the risen Christ in dreams and visions and come to faith in Him.

So this may not be the true time of the Saviour’s birth, but we celebrate the coming of the true Son into the world. Happy Christmas!

It’s time you started celebrating the coming of the TWIN SONS of Yahweh, who in His wisdom, sent not one, but TWO, to help each other bring the message of repentance and redemption to sinners.

The Devil tried to stop it all by sending The Impostor Mary to kidnap Jesus the Forerunner from his mother Elizabeth and non-identical twin brother John the Baptist at Ein Karem where they were born, 2000 years ago.

Weird. I am an atheist and highly suspect that there are no gods at all. Religion is a psychological prop for humans living in an utterly dangerous and often unpredictable world. Opium for the lower IQ’d masses and the intellectually confused. Bell Curve theory postulates that 50% of a population are below average intelligence. So this explains the rise of, and deep embedding of religion in human groups.
Much as I love the fact that the fantasy of religion created marvellous architecture and music and writings, and made this country stable, gave us meaning and led to our rise to the top, I also recognise that it is a complicated, extensive and expensive (in human life and money) fantasy.

Grim, where do you think your immortal soul goes while you are fast asleep in this physical world? It goes wandering in the spirit world, and your soul’s real experiences there sometimes emerge into your consciousness as “dreams”. Your dreams are as completely real as your experiences in this physical world, and you have much to learn from them. The difference is that only here in the physical world are we given the chance to exert our own FREE WILL to choose between Good and Evil. In the spirit world, where your soul goes after its temporary residence in your physical form is done and you appear to die, souls are more often than not controlled by evil, demonic beings that override your free will, forcing you to do bad things there as an excuse to falsely accuse you and keep your soul enslaved. None of you on here believe anything I have said about religion, but you will find out the truth of it anon. The best thing is just to ASK Jesus whether he is Christ or the Forerunner, whether he is Almighty God, who his real mother is, and whether his twin brother is John the Baptist… Read more »

I’m finding that some stories are just entertained to trigger a reaction, as are some media organisations; rage baiting.

It’s unlikely any Publican would ban a crowd of carol singers as it is almost guaranteed there would be no muslims present.
I’m not sure that the puritannical soul-suckers that wish to pour cold water on conviviality would frequent their local boozer either.
The choir to which I belong was INVITED to sing in a neighbouring village pub and were very well received. No doubt libations were taken; I didn’t go because a resident of the village once implied I was a plague rat for refusing the Covid jabs and I didn’t care to run into her (unless at 30 mph in a vehicle).

I feel our carols are safe after 2 concerts, a crib service for +/- 300 souls this evening (as organist) and observing local pubs and restaurants making the most of the season.

I thought this was a lovely idea, though. I can imagine some interesting backing vocals and harmonies were experienced;

”St. John the Baptist Church in Holland Park, London, hosted a ‘Carols with Pets’ service welcoming people and their pets to sing together.

The two services were sold out on both days, attracting up to 400 people and animals.

People from all over traveled with their pets to attend the services.

I can’t love this more than I already do. Being able to enjoy the service with their beloved fur babies is priceless. Look at all those happy faces and all those beautiful decked out dogs.”

How very odd that a devout Jewish person like yourself should support dogs and other animals in Christian churches, when they are quite rightly NOT ALLOWED IN JEWISH SYNAGOGUES.

General Rule Against AnimalsIn Jewish law (Halacha), there is a general prohibition against bringing animals into synagogues due to concerns about maintaining the sanctity and dignity of the space. Animals can be seen as a distraction to worshippers and may detract from the reverence of the synagogue environment.

ישיבת הר ברכה

“…bringing a dog into the synagogue constitutes a great disgrace, and in addition, the dog may frighten the worshippers, especially the children, and thereby disturb the prayer. We also found in the words of our Sages, negative things about evil and dangerous dogs. And so wrote Rabbi Moshe Malka, Chief Rabbi of Petach Tikva, in ‘Mikveh HaMayim’ (5:21):

“There is no greater contempt and disgrace than this to the house of prayer.” “

I agree with him!

Small wonder you’re very comfortable hurling accusations at people or waxing lyrical about topics like you’re some sort of armchair expert, yet you’re strangely reticent when it comes to backing up any of your outlandish claims, which we can all assume are lies until proven otherwise.

There you go again, denying what you yourself told all of us many times, when you were hurling accusations of Antisemitism at all the commenters on here, just after the October 7th attacks, because as a Jewish person you felt none of us were sufficiently enraged at the time, though most of us were indeed shocked by the atrocities committed against your people. You went on & on for some time about it after that, hurling accusations of Antisemitism left & right.

You later went on to loudly proclaim that you were not racist because you had married an Ethnic Indian Hindu man and had children with him in Holland where you live, one of whom was born only about a year ago. You even sneered at us all for thinking the commenters were all “white”.

I’m astonished that no one on here seems to remember your outbursts.

Probably because you’re the only perpetual fantasist on here who conjures material out of your imagination with which to stalk and harass anyone you take a personal dislike to, like the pathological liar and obsessive shit-stirrer you are.
As my accuser, the onus is on you to provide supporting evidence for your claims. I’m under no obligation to prove a negative.

Everything you post is a confession: to just how desperate, deluded and vindictive you are. What a sorry state your psychological wellbeing must be in. Anyone who cannot tell the difference between what’s real and what’s imaginary needs help. The consistent creepy, obsessive stalker look does your image no good, not that professional narcissists like yourself probably care about such things.
The cherry on the Cake of Irony is that you profess to be a Christian.🤡🤥

The Moderator and Editors have a complete archive of all comments on this website, and can easily prove the truth of what you yourself said here in the past.

The only reason I can think of that you would declare such things and then double down denying them later is that you may be a Hasbara whose job is to keep tabs on this particular website, as I began to wonder after reading them long ago, even before joining the commenters here. In any case, it’s never worth further discussion when someone just doubles down as you are doing, because you will go on… and on… and on… for months afterward.

In the Netherlands we celebrate St. Nicholas on the 5th of December.
As well as other issues having eroded this feast for children, the lyrics of the songs associated with it have been altered to make sure no one is offended.
The end result is not good. Christmas is taking over and the feast of St. Nicholas is marginalised.
