Nigel Farage Fumes at “Banana Republic” Britain as Labour Prepares to Delay Local Council Elections Again Until 2027

Nigel Farage has said Britain is turning into a “banana republic” as Labour prepares to delay local council elections again until 2027 for millions of voters. The Mail has the story.

Ministers said they were asking 63 local authorities across England whether they want to postpone contests scheduled for May next year until 2027.

Some council leaders were said to have expressed fears that holding elections in 2026 could derail their efforts to deliver Labour’s reorganisation of local government.

The latest YouGov opinion poll on Westminster voting intention, published this week, showed Reform with a 10 percentage point lead over Labour, with the Tories and Greens a point further behind.

There is growing speculation that Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will face a leadership challenge if Labour suffers a disastrous set of results in May’s local elections in England, as well as contests in Scotland and Wales.

Mr Farage said: ‘Turkeys don’t vote for Christmas. Tory county councils look set to collude with Labour to keep their control until 2027.’

He added that ‘only a banana republic bans elections’ as he called on Tory leader Kemi Badenoch to ‘instruct her council leaders to allow elections to go ahead’.

Sir Ed Davey, the Liberal Democrat leader, also expressed his anger at the prospect of local elections being suspended once more.

He said: ‘This is looking like yet another Labour and Conservative stitch-up to deny people their votes in May.

‘Kemi Badenoch must stop her Conservative council leaders from delaying elections yet again just because they are running scared of the Liberal Democrats.’

Senior Tory MP Sir James Cleverly, the shadow local government secretary, noted how ministers recently said they intended for all elections set for May 2026 to go ahead.

He said: ‘Labour promised council elections would go ahead as planned as recently as last week. Now they’re saying they won’t. Another broken promise.

‘Voters will now be denied the right to elect their own representatives – and not for the first time under this Labour Government.

‘Labour are scared of the voters. They thought they could completely overhaul local government and stack the deck in their favour. They were wrong.’

Sir James added it ‘cannot be right’ that some councillors might now serve seven-year terms.

‘The Electoral Commission warned the Government that elections should not be delayed by more than a year, but that has clearly fallen on deaf ears,’ he continued.

‘Labour pushed these changes through at an unrealistic pace and are now blaming local leaders for not being ready.’

I trust that no-one on this site is in any way surprised by Labour’s / 2TK’s behaviour over this matter (??). This type of chicanery and duplicity is the standard SOP for Labour and their muppet ‘Leader’. Of course, we must all remember that The Kneeler did say he would be “ruthless”. What will be interesting will be the Conservative Party’s and Badenoch’s reaction to this attempt to deny citizens their right to exercise ‘local’ democracy.

She’s given it the go ahead. She’s not going to over-rule Conservative Councils which want to deny democracy.

Claiming Central Government cannot overrule or interfere with Local Government until Central Government orders house building and solar panels on top quality farmland. Then Councils say they have no choice but to obey Central Government.

Jacob Rees Mogg has been explicit in calling for the Tories to object and for Councillors who agree to be expelled from the Con Party.

Could this be another issue which tips Tories to apply for membership of Reform.

Six years after cancellation of local elections by The Pandemic That Never Was comes cancellation of local elections by The Prime Minister Who Never Is.

It’s obvious that Starmer so easily dismisses democracy, he is more interested in his dictatorial pals in Davos than he is in representing the people. He is a Fabian and his agenda is to subjugate the people by any means possible, he was elected by accident and his manifesto was a sham. He will be remembered as a tyrant.

Clearly the reorganisation of local government, which is simply gerrymandering anyway, has been calculated to not produce a sufficient enough swing to Liebour so this is the solution. As the voting situation will only ever get worse for this treasonous government I believe the flimsy charade of democracy in this country is finally being brought to an end. As predicted.

My mate who works in local government at a fairly senior level says the reorganization is because central government wants to deal with as small a number of people as possible for “strategic” stuff – so they want a bunch of Mayors round the table. All that local democracy just gets in the way…

Yes. Would explain why Andrea Jenkyns suddenly didn’t bother standing again for Morley and Outwood and instead is a mayor.

You can probably more easily manipulate a single Mayor than a whole bunch of councillors.

Michael Bloomberg drew the line at flying all local councillors to his recent “local government” get together in Rio. It’s obviously so much more cost-effective to focus his attentions on Sadiq Khan, Tracy Brabin, Andy Burnham etc.

Yes it makes a lot of sense.

The problem with electing councillors is that occasionally a good one gets in. Good as in honest.

That may be true. The idea also explains why Labour wants to merge police authorities to have only 12 in the entire country.

The new unitary county authorities will approximately match the “sub-regional” authorities the EU wanted and the new police areas will approximate to the EU regions. What might that tell us.

Recall also that preparations for the unitary county authorities were going on when the Tories were in office. What might that tell you about the insincerity of the complaints today.

Nothing they say will convince me until I see genuine contrition and an explanation for the shitshow of their 14 years in office, especially 2020 onwards.

I don’t want to see contrition from the Contories I just want to see the whole organisation obliterated.

Isn’t more and more centralization of government the aim of Communism, destroying all ties of kinship, tribe, friends, religion and cultural traditions that help individuals function without state interference, in order to make each human totally isolated from others and totally dependent on the state?

Hobbes, Rousseau, Lenin, Huxley and George Orwell?

The French revolution supporters spread control from the cities outwards and this is the same playbook… just look at London, those suburbs under Khans control wouldn’t vote for him, likewise Birmingham dominates the West Midlands where they are less likely to vote Labour.

Also handily makes sure that bigger city populations dominate rural and small town areas.. handily they are also more diverse and likely to vote Labour.

Thanks for that gem of information from your mate! It’s as if the Globalists are going to install Mayors everywhere, worldwide, giving them power over much larger areas than just the towns and cities they have always traditionally led, turning them into little Stalinist Commissars in the Global Communist Government. But nobody voted for that!

Ah, postponing elections…
These guys are amateurs.
The solution to the problem of the population accidentally selecting the wrong candidate is very simple: all candidates should be Labour Party members. To simplify the process, there should only be one candidate.
In addition, to ensure that the election is legitimate, voting should be compulsory.
This is how it’s done in a proper dictatorship.

The Tories seem to be focussed on the cdelay to the 200256 elections, but perhaps not quite enough to suspend or dismiss from membership any Councillors who cooperate with Labour. We must all remember and keep reminding the Tories how they cooperated in 2025 so those elections were cancelled. That saved hundreds of Tories from being dismissed by the voters.

If those Tory Councillors had a shadow of honour they would resign individually to allow by-elections to go ahead.

Meanwhile, Councillors with no democratic mandate are redesigning the electoral areas at local level. They will put in place new local areas according to their choice without voter approval and without accountability. All the time they will continue to receive their allowances and in some areas they will build up additional pension rights as well.

The shame of this should follow both Tories and Labour for the rest of their lives as a foul smell. In 2025 the Tory front bench in Parliament failed to use all the resources available to them to prevent the cancellation so they remain tainted too.

Yes, it’s horrible, as if the Evil Communist Globalists have thrown off their masks and are making open moves to abolish democracy, elections and even jury trials before our very eyes.

They are indeed “Going Beyond Authority”, because they have NO RIGHT and NO MANDATE from the public to do any of those things.

I predict plenty of dirty tricks between now and the next general election. The deferral of local elections is the start. Expect plenty of character assassinations on candidates from right-leaning parties, with accounts of things they are alleged to have said and done from childhood to the present day being raised up. (Think of Nigel Farage.) Then there will be Putin-esque legal challenges against high-profile figures on the right. This government isn’t interested in what voters want or think.

The last reorganisation of local government was in planning and consultation for 8 years while this shower of shit came up with these ideas in what seems like a few days. Making government more remote is the wrong idea unless of course your plan IS to make it harder for the public to contact you. One interesting thing is what will happen to the highway authorities. The county councils run the highways and given they are going it means that presumably the merged district councils will take over.

The unwritten British Constitution has relied for centuries on “honourable people” to abide by it.

We now have anti-democrat Tyrants in power. There is nothing honourable about them: they are fully subscribed to the principle of doing anything they deem necessary in order to achieve their aims.

If Reform manages to win the next General Election, we are going to have to create a Written British Constitution, based on the American one.

Putin has been in power for decades because he fiddled elections, Zelensky stopped elections, Mugabi stopped elections, China does not have elections, North Korea does not have elections. Now the UK joins the group led by the tyrant Keir Starmer and his team. Do you know what the problem is with this country? It still lives in the fanatasy land that chants the mantra that the NHS is the envy of the world, whilst it has some of the worst performance stats in the West. likewise the chant that we are a free country. People look at what Starmer is doing in emulating the Dictatorships of the world and they just think “oh but this is Great Britain, things like that don’t happen here, we are British” Wake up, its happening, we are watched 24/7, we are censored, imprisoned for saying any disagreeable thing against the Government and its protected communities, we are being take over and under threat by imported young men of fighting age who will lend their votes to this tyrant, we are having a social credit system forced upon us such that we can be shut out of society, employment, banks, schools, healthcare, a home, if… Read more »
