Sharron Davies Made Tory Peer After Campaign to Ban Trans Athletes From Women’s Sport
Sharron Davies, the former Olympic swimmer, will be made a Conservative peer after leading a campaign to ban transwomen from women’s sport. The Telegraph has the story.
Ms Davies won two gold medals in the 1978 Commonwealth Games and a silver medal in the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
She began campaigning for female sports to be restricted to biological women in 2019 after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) removed the requirement for athletes who identify as women to have had sex reassignment surgery.
She went on to write a letter to the IOC, signed by more than 60 world-class athletes, urging it to ban biological men from taking part in female-only events.
She will take her seat in the House of Lords after being nominated by Kemi Badenoch.
Ms Davies told the Telegraph: “I am obviously very proud to be asked. My dad’s very shortly 90 and still coaching kids’ swimming, so I’m pleased he will see this huge family honour.
“It’s exciting to carry on fighting for women’s rights and safeguarding, as well as trying to encourage more young people to do and stay in sport.
“I’m massively interested in both physical and mental health, getting all children swimming, a life-saving skill, and promoting resilience and confidence in our youth.”
Fiona McAnena, the Director of Campaigns at women’s rights charity Sex Matters, said: “Sharron is a wonderful role model and a powerful voice advocating for women and girls in sport.
“She has faced abuse and lost income because she spoke the truth – that there can be no place for male bodies in women’s sport, at any level.
“She thoroughly deserves this recognition, and I am sure she will continue her tireless advocacy. We need more Sharrons!”
The other Tory peers include Simon Heffer, the author and historian who is a columnist for the Telegraph, and Graham Edwards, the Conservative Party Treasurer.
Sir John Redwood, the former MP and Cabinet minister, also goes to the House of Lords.

It is a disgrace that Starmer would appoint so many additional Labour Peers when his party’s and his government’s standing are so low in public esteem. To deny seats to Reform, given their huge lead in the polls for such a long time now, is an outrage.
It seems to me Reform would have to appoint hundreds of new Peers in order to overwhelm the dominant majority in the HoL accounted for by Labour, LibDems, Bishops and most of the Tories there. This would have to be done in the first weeks of a new government as opposition from the Peers would be matched by the judiciary, the blob, quangos and everyone on Whitehall’s list of potential appointees.
