Forced Out for Saying Fireman
A hero firefighter of 27 years’ service praised for his bravery was disciplined for not telling off colleagues for using the term ‘fireman’ and has now lost an unfair dismissal case. The Mail has more.
Simon Bailey, who was previously praised for his bravery, was issued a written warning in July 2023 by a tribunal after failing to challenge staff who used the term ‘fireman‘.
It came after a female colleague, former England rugby player Sasha Acheson, had complained about his behaviour and ongoing “sexism” within the service.
Part of her complaint included the term “fireman” being “used frequently” by her co-workers at the station, despite the terminology being “outdated”.
She claimed that when she took her concerns to her manager he was “shell-shocked” by her complaint and “mildly aggressive” in tone. Ms Acheson later received a payout of more than £52,000 while Mr Bailey was reprimanded.
Mr Bailey, who had spent 27 years working for Avon Fire and Rescue Service and had received a letter of commendation from his bosses, said he had been left feeling “humiliated” by the proceedings.
After taking time off work on sick leave, he resigned from his role as Watch Manager in September 2023 and launched an unfair dismissal case against the service claiming constructive dismissal.
But he has now lost his claim, after an employment tribunal ruled his bosses had been “reasonable” to reprimand him for his lack of action following Ms Acheson’s complaint.
Ms Acheson complained about the behaviour of her colleagues in July 2021, with part of the issue being their continued use of the word ‘fireman’.
She claimed she challenged peers when it was used “with a smile” or a “groan”, and on one occasion, a firefighter responded: “I will stop saying fireman when they stop specifically recruiting only firewomen.”
She added that Mr Bailey had “treated her like a probie [someone on probation], not respected her, belittled her and put her down”.
In a separate incident, Ms Acheson alleged women were called “snakes with tits” by staff.
During an investigative interview, Mr Bailey said that the term fireman was used “quite commonly, rightly or wrongly”.
“I’m old-fashioned. I don’t use it, but I don’t see a problem. It’s pretty obvious to me that that term should not be used anymore,” he said.
He admitted that he never challenged anyone for saying fireman rather than firefighter – but claimed he might have joked “you can’t say that”.
He said the language at the station “[was] not squeaky clean all the time”, but he believed it to be “respectful”.
When asked about comments, one of his colleagues said: “[They are] not malicious. There is banter with everyone.
“When there are girls there – someone might make a joke, who is doing the dishes?”
A probe into the incident later found Mr Bailey should have challenged his crew members about using the term ‘fireman’ instead of ‘firefighter’.
In December 2021, Ms Acheson went on sick leave and did not return until her employment tribunal ended in May 2022.
She won her sexual harassment, discrimination and victimisation case, and received a payout of over £52,000.
Mr Bailey later received a written warning for failing to confront his colleagues, and suffered a downward mental spiral as a result. He eventually left the force.

My contempt for the utter rubbish that is Acheson is off the scale. A contemptible girl who is obviously so full of shyte decided to go after a senior fireman, a man with a commendable career record, awarded for bravery at work and effectively cost him his job and doubtless much mental anguish throughout the whole disgusting process. Who the hell would want to be in a room with hernow? How the hell could her male colleagues trust her when the flames are licking? She is a serious liability to not just her colleagues but most definitely the public. Doubtless she has a cracking future in front of her the evil POS.
The tribunal chairman wants exporting too. Gaza should suit him nicely. Utter tw#t
Should do her popularity a world of good…
Yes but she will always be a trouble causer.
Yes this is a piss-poor situation and a perfect example of what happens when the woke mind virus/DEI insanity infests a particular sector. Standards, as well as public safety, take a hit. I can’t imagine the atmosphere in that team now and I’d have thought it’d be unbearable for her due to the resentment from her colleagues and she’d just leave. Her reputation will proceed her wherever she goes now, though.
To my mind, you need a thick skin working in a male-dominated profession and it was up to her to prove herself worthy of being part of the team. Then she might have gained their respect. I think all she’s done is alienate herself from her male colleagues and royally screw up this man’s long career, reputation and life. These sorts of women make me feel ashamed because we’re obviously not all whingey, woke, back-stabbing arseholes, and this behaviour of hers reflects badly on the rest of us. He was also betrayed by his superiors as they should’ve looked at the bigger picture, his excellent work history and had his back, but they screwed him over instead.
Completely agree Mogs. 👍
Another triumph of wokery: we would rather burn to death than rescued by a fireman with outdated ideas.
Ms Acheson must be an ace firefightress and an absolute pleasure to work with.
As with most things, Jim has an opinion that aligns with mine. As he says: Simon didn’t fail the fire service, the service failed him. All because he didn’t toe the line as a progressive woketard. An excerpt; ”There’s a madness gripping Britain, and it speaks in euphemisms. It talks about “inclusion”, “respect”, “modern terminology”. But strip away the soft words and you find something far darker: a regime of linguistic obedience where a man’s livelihood now hinges on whether he polices other people’s speech. That is what happened to Simon Bailey, a fireman of nearly thirty years, hounded out of his job because he didn’t bark at his colleagues for using a word that every Briton has used since childhood. This wasn’t a dispute over language. It was the public shaming of a man who wouldn’t bend the knee to the new faith. The truth is stark. Bailey wasn’t punished for wrongdoing. He was punished for failing to perform the role of political enforcer. The fire service didn’t care about his record, his commendations, or the decades he spent running into burning buildings. They cared that he didn’t act as a language warden for a set of rules that… Read more »
Yes, that nails it to a T. Thanks again Mogs.
£52000? Crikey. What a travesty.
And all off the taxpayers.
I do hope the karma gods catch up with Acheson at some point, she deserves no less.
‘Sticks and stones
May break my bones
But names
Will earn me Compo’
But if you say actress you’ll be in trouble (unless it’s for an Oscar) because you must say actor now. Fireman, firemen, keep saying it until the thought police explode into smithereens with their own stupid, pointless, pernicious indignation. Fireman Bailey, I salute you.
Easily solved. Return to the fitness standards of the past, that are necessary for fire persons to do their job of rescuing people safely from fires. (Actually, I understand the they now need to be even stronger since people are getting heavier.) I doubt many moppets (am I allowed to say that?) would pass. Those that did would probably be robust enough to fit in without any friction.
Firemen do a great job. A woman cannot carry a heavy person over their shoulder like a man can. The same applies to front line soldiers.
That’s not the only thing a fireman or front-line soldier has to do. Great if they can do it all but let’s not lose them if they have to specialise in different aspects of the work.
Fireman is one of those words where the ‘man’ apparent suffix is rather irrelevant. I happily served on a school governors’ board with a madam Chairman. I also knew a female former close protection police officer (you really wouldn’t want to piss her off) who was quite content to be called a policeman (or copper – didn’t like cops to be referred to as ‘pigs’).
That is absolutely shocking.
I saw two fire trucks scream through my local high street last week and pull up outside some flats. Nothing going on as far as I could see but the ‘firemen’ who got out and lingered about in the car park were all female, blond, skinny and not very tall as far as I could see. The car park looked like an episode of Love Island but without the men.
I kind of resigned myself there and then to dying in a fire if ever our house went up and I couldn’t get out.
Thanks to Will Jones, the DS & the Mail for exposing the appalling injustice done to this brave firefighter, treated so shabbily after all his years of risking life and limb to rescue so many people. It is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.

Firefighters Prayer by unknown author:
“When I am called to duty, God,
Wherever flames may rage,
Give me strength to save a life,
Whatever be its age.
Help me embrace a little child
Before it is too late.
Or to save an older person
From the horror of that fate.
Enable me to be alert,
And hear the weakest shout,
And quickly and efficiently
To put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling,
To give the best in me,
To guard my friend and neighbour,
And protect their property.
And if according to your will
I must answer Death’s call,
Bless with Your protecting hand,
My family one and all.”
What a nasty stupid piece of work that woman is
Fireman Sam, Fireman Sam, Fireman Sam
Dismayed to read this. Undertaking technical work on a marine terminal not so long ago, a colleague and I were lucky not to be sprayed by a sudden relase of dangerous chemicals. We ran to the shore end of the jetty. The local operations crew drinking coffee were unaware. of what had happened. We learned over the radio that a ships officer had been drenched by the release and been badly burnt. I urged the shore crew call the emergency services. . They called in the site emergency team, 8 of whom turned up in fire suits and breathing apparatus. While assorted police, fire and ambulance teams stared to arrive, the 2 female team leaders went through an elaborate formal routine, checking and recording apparatus pressures, numbers, team members names and other such things, I intervened and stated ” this is not an exercise – theres a badly burned man on that ship who needs to be in that ambulance – Now! ” Eventually the team leader broke off ticking boxes, despatched a few of her team who eventually brought the officer to the ambulance. Fortunately he recovered after a day or 2 in hospital I have been part of… Read more »
Excellent post from real-life experience, for which there is no substitute!
And she is a fe”male”. Thats outdated now as well.
Presumably this comment was submitted by a human?
Unreal! What World do these people live it?
What’s wrong with “woman” suffixing anything are they not proud of their gender?
Also Firefighter Sam doesn’t sound quite right to me.
This is the world in the UK turning upside down. It could have been put to bed by simply telling the woman to Get the h… out of here if you this is your biggest concern, I have a fire station to run. But no, instead your corrupted courts awarded the ex rugby player £52,000 of taxpayers money. Happy everyone? Another group of incompetent gov’t agencies, doing what they are told, instead of using common sense.
I was a fireMAN in London when women first began to enter the Brigade.
We used to refer to those women as “handbags” because we had to carry them.
I wonder how that would go down with the snowflakes and the wokerati of today.
