Boriswave Migrants Face 10-Year Ban on Claiming Benefits
Millions of migrants who came to Britain as part of the Boriswave face a 10-year ban on claiming benefits as critics warn that giving the cohort indefinite leave to remain will cost Britain hundreds of billions of pounds. The Telegraph has more.
Shabana Mahmood, the Home Secretary, is expected to announce plans to force up to 1.6 million migrants who arrived under Boris Johnson’s immigration regime to wait a decade before they are entitled to indefinite leave to remain (ILR).
There are fears that the migrants could add hundreds of millions of pounds to Britain’s growing benefits bill because more than 800,000 are in low-paid work, meaning they and their families could be eligible for welfare support.
Data released under freedom of information laws show that 55% (879,000) of the 1.6 million migrants who arrived from 2021 to 2024 were earning less than the British median wage of £29,640 a year.
They are entitled to apply for ILR after five years of continuous residence, but Ms Mahmood is this month expected to unveil proposals to retrospectively change the rules to require them to wait a decade.
Rob Bates, Research Director of the Centre for Migration Control, who obtained the low wage data, said: “Hundreds of thousands of people who arrived under the Boriswave are paying very little into the system and in a few weeks’ time will begin qualifying for ILR, allowing them to access benefits.
“We already have over 1.2 million foreign nationals claiming Universal Credit. Unless the Boriswave is blocked from receiving settled status, this cohort will cost the country hundreds of billions of pounds in the coming years.”

Crikey. That’s two sensible things in a row. Anyone else feeling slightly disoriented and queasy.
Where is the pushback from labour MP’s for a start..? They normally wail and moan loudly at the very idea of not paying every lame beggar from the public purse. Something doesn’t add up..
Pakistani Muslim Mahmood will say and do anything to get into No. 10 as the UK’s first Illegal Muslim Prime Minister.
Don’t believe a word of it.
I don’t believe a word of anything.
There’s a Labour Leadership contest underway:
“Please support me; I’ll see off that dreadful Farage so you’ll stand a chance of keeping your seat and don’t worry, I won’t actually DO what I’m saying.”
Guess who wants to replace Starmler?
Like many people before this recent focus on immigration I had no idea ILR existed and that you can claim benefits after just five years of being in the UK. Benefits should be for citizens only.
While I was still involved in these things, it didn’t seem that easy to get a Tier 2 visa and people getting them would have most likely been net contributors and not needed benefits. If you lost your work sponsor you had to find another one or go home. Language and salary requirements were reasonably exacting. Not saying it was right, but it was harder. I think after 5 years on Tier 2 you could apply for ILR but in my experience the people doing that continued to be net contributors and pretty unlikely to claim benefits. All that seems to have changed.
More utter junk promises from a member of this useless Government. Tax rises but only until the back bench rebel. Benefit cuts, oh no, back bench says no, WFA removed but only for a year until those bloody back benches scream. Everything they say, everything they promised lasts just until it gets too awkward and then they abandon it. No way will any of this happen.
It’s just more gaslighting, it just will not happen.
So after years of doing virtually nothing to halt this wave of migrants, something might be getting done. So although I am not too impressed with the “something” what it shows is that they could be doing things, and should have done so years ago instead of insisting people are all racists, and are only doing so now because they see the polls and the protests, and they see support going to REFORM.
It is pretty obvious that if there were no protests or REFORM and the government still had a healthy lead in the polls that migrants would be flooding in increasing numbers year on year.
Just another tinted female Home Secretary telling us a load of nonsense.
The only thing stopping the boats is the weather.
Meanwhile Crowborough gets the Epping treatment and the prospect of 600 undocumented men on their doorstep.
The far left vote is moving to the Green party under their new charismatic Leader.
But …. I thought all the migrants were highly paid, highly skilled engineers, doctors and scientists?
Why would they need welfare?
Oh …… surely the Establishment didn’t lie to us?
