Socialist Zohran Mamdani Becomes First Muslim Mayor of New York
Socialist Zohran Mamdani has been elected the first Muslim Mayor of New York in a political earthquake that puts the far Left in charge of America’s largest and wealthiest city. The Mail has more.
Mamdani, who becomes the Big Apple’s first Muslim mayor, defeated former New York State governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in a race that became a massive flashpoint in national politics, taking over 50% of the vote.
His victory capped a clean sweep for Democrats in the few big races of this off-year election, as Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey and Abigail Spanberger of Virginia easily won governor’s races, while Gavin Newsom’s Prop 50 campaign was also approved.
Mamdani told supporters who packed into Brooklyn’s Paramount Theatre and chanted his name: “I am Muslim. I am a democratic socialist. And most damning of all, I refuse to apologise for any of this.”
The Democrat’s promise of free buses, no rent, fewer cops and higher taxes for the wealthy and big business sparked unprecedented support in a mayoral race with the highest turnout in more than 50 years.
But real estate agents fear his victory will spark a mass exodus from the Big Apple and critics – including Wall Street – have warned his policies could cripple the city’s economy.
In his ferocious speech promising a “new dawn” for New York, he quoted late socialist politician Eugene Debs, bragged about “toppling a political dynasty” and launched into a blistering attack against President Donald Trump – who has called Mamdani a “communist”.
“If any city can show a nation how to stop Donald Trump, it is the city that gave rise to him,” said Mamdani, who represents a district in the same borough of Queens where the President was raised.
He then directly addressed the President: “Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up!”
As Mamdani listed various ways he would take on the Republican President, Trump posted ominously to Truth Social: “…AND SO IT BEGINS!'”

To start with, his brand of socialist economics has been tried and failed repeatedly in the past. Back in the 1970s, the Swedish economist Assar Lindbeck memorably described rent controls as “the most efficient technique presently known to destroy a city – except for bombing”, and endless attempts since then have simply proved the truth of that observation. New York’s existing controls are already accused of sending apartment prices spiralling upwards, and new regulations will only make that worse.
It is hard to imagine, meanwhile, that state-run grocery stores will be better than Walmart; they will almost certainly be as hopeless as every other state-run industry. As for free buses, demand will quickly outstrip supply, with queuing the only way to ration the product. Add it all up, and ‘East Berlin on the Hudson‘ is unlikely to be a great success.
Mamdani’s “democratic socialism” will be especially catastrophic in a city with completely open borders. He can’t push up income and corporate taxes by himself, but if he does get what he wants then surely both companies and ‘the rich’ will simply move to Florida or Texas (as many have already threatened to do). They are unlikely to stick around merely to fill the Mayor’s coffers, and he will have no way of stopping the exodus.
Finally, the federal Government can’t afford to tolerate a New York that is intent on destroying itself. New York state accounts for almost 8% of the country’s output, and much of that is generated within New York City. More importantly, it is the financial and commercial hub of the American continent, home to the stock market, and all its major banks and trading firms, as well as many of the biggest conglomerates. So Mamdani will be at war with Washington, and however magnetic his TikTok feed, that is a battle he will surely lose.

I wouldn’t quite say invaded, invited perhaps. Perhaps we need a new word to describe the act of inviting people in against the will of the people. Treachery and treason won’t gain traction. The left are good at changing or modifying word meanings, perhaps “gerrymandering” fits the bill, it means “to divide (a state, school district, etc.) into political units that give one group an unfair advantage”.

This is a helpful reminder that many of the awful things that happen in our society have the support of a lot of people.
We can blame elites and our so called leaders to a point. But the general population has a lot to answer for much of the time.

This is a not really helpful reminder that the people who are responsible for the awful things they’re doing are good at getting others to vote for them nevertheless. Eg, by claiming that mankind is in a mortal danger only they can prevent (for sake of example, let’s call it man-made COVID change)
or by wrongly asserting that a vote is not about rationally selecting a candidate based on one’s own political preferences but really about chosing sides in a fight of the ultimate good against the ultimate evil, this usually being accomplished by referring to one’s political opponents as Nazis/ fascists.

I think you’ve failed to appreciate the meaning of Rindvieh when applied to people (which may be due to my lackluster attempts to render that in English). It means someone who’s well-intentioned but whose actions will more often than not rather harm than help because he neither really understands the problem nor the consequences of his own actions. This goes along with Aristoteles’ observation that democracy isn’t a particularly sensible way to organize a state because the masses will sooner or later always fall for a demagogue. Theoretically, Ocasio-Cortez blathering about the assignment of fighting fascism despite there’s no fascism anywhere in sight, especially not in the USA where all governments and other institution have always been elected, is just inane. I read an interview with an actor called Brian Cox, apparently famous for a role in Succession, which I haven’t seen, and obviously Scottish and well acquainted with gritty reality of course, right down-to earth man of the world.
