Mozart to be Played by British-Japanese Actor in Woke Reboot

Mozart will be played by British-Japanese actor Will Sharpe in Sky’s woke reboot of Amadeus, sparking criticism that the period drama will be “historically inaccurate and misleading”. The Telegraph has more.

Sky has created a new series based on the life of the composer, based on Peter Shaffer’s play Amadeus, which explores the rivalry provoked by his musical genius.

A diverse group of actors will play courtiers and composers, including real historical figures based in 18th-century Vienna.

Critics have said such portrayals are “historically inaccurate and misleading”.

Sky made a commitment in 2020 – following a summer of Black Lives Matter protests – to ensure 20% of all roles went to black and minority ethnic performers.

In addition to British-Japanese actor Will Sharpe in the role of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Paul Bettany as his Italian rival Antonio Salieri, the cast includes young actors Ényì Okoronkwo and Jyuddah Jaymes in supporting roles.

Okoronkwo, who appeared in Disney’s Renegade Nell, will play the Italian librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, the man who wrote the texts for Mozart’s celebrated The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Così Fan Tutte.

Jaymes, who has appeared in the ITV series Sanditon, will play the Austrian composer Franz Xaver Süssmayr, who completed Mozart’s Requiem mass following his death in 1791.

Lead actor Sharpe, whose mother is Japanese, was nominated for an Emmy award for his performance as American tech entrepreneur Ethan Spiller in White Lotus.

The series is a ‘reimagining’ of Shaffer’s 1979 play, which charts the obsessional envy of Salieri for Mozart’s divine musical talent. The play was previously adapted into a lauded 1984 film version, which won eight Oscars.

While 18th-century Vienna, as the centre of the Holy Roman Empire, was home to a range of European ethnic groups, the level of diversity depicted in the upcoming series has been questioned.

Pianist and music scholar at the City of London University, Professor Ian Pace, said that such a portrayal was “certainly historically inaccurate and misleading”.

He added: “Vienna was a diverse society: Austrians, Hungarians, Czechs, Slovaks, Poles, Croats, Serbs and others.

“But the Holy Roman Empire, of which it was then part, had no major colonial holdings outside of Europe and no significant population of African origin.”

He added that there was in fact a large Ottoman Turkish population in Vienna at the time. However, this group does not appear to feature in the new Amadeus.

I thank my devotion to the programmes that are based on George R R Martin’s books, Game of Thrones etc, which are a fantasy land, loosely based on European history. This allows actors of all genders, races and proclivities to perform excellently in their roles. I now imagine all historical dramas are a form of his books. This allowed me to enjoy King and Conqueror with coloured actors playing Mercians and Normans and Shardlake, a Tudor drama, with a black secretary to Thomas Cromwell and a black abbot of a remote Catholic monastery. So for me, the Shardlake books are wonderful to read, but the TV drama is just a fantasy loosely connected to British history. My blood pressure remains moderate rather than high as a result.

I just tend to watch the channels that play the old TV series and films before all this bullshit came along. I watched See How They Run the other evening that had two obligatory spades as they used to say in the USA which I doubt would have been there in 50s England.

It is part of the plan to erase history, heritage and cultural identity… but only of White people… to create the brave new world without borders, without national identities, citizens of the world with a single ersatz culture and approved history as decided by the elites.

”… but the TV drama is just a fantasy loosely connected to British history.”

We know that today, but future generations will believe it is British history. Too difficult?

Look forward to news of new films etc being made where white actors and actresses play historical characters who were non white. We used to have that, but that’s apparently bad – cultural appropriation or worse.

So this initiative is just more anti white racist bullshit. I won’t be watching. I used to have broad tastes but these days I try not to watch anything that doesn’t have a predominantly white European cast.

I agree Shogun is very good.

Perhaps they should recast the native Japanese as large hulking white men with ginger beards. Who cares that Japan was isolated and had very few gaijin at the time. They’d scream bloody murder if that happened, but it’s okay in reverse.

I have no problem with this. If that’s what they want to do, it’s up to them.

The problem i have is with the fact that if someone did a movie about Martin Luther King or of Nelson Mandela or of Louis Armstrong played by a white man, there would be a massive outrage and the people who dared do it would be committing professional suicide. They might even be arrested and thrown in jail for hate crimes.

That is the real problem with all this.

Typical: forcing a great English actor like Paul Bettany to play the evil Italian villain Salieri, and giving the lead role of the great Ethnic European German Mozart to an Ethnic Oriental in a curly wig.

The author of the Coudenhove-Kalergi Plan for White Genocide also had a Japanese mother, and promoted the extermination of Ethnic Europeans, to replace them with “The Bronze Race”, modelled on Egyptian Slaves.

Just say NO.

Historically inaccurate. Gaslighting was not in use in Mozart’s lifetime.
