Italy to Ban Burka
Italy is to ban the burka as part of new legislation against “Islamic separatism” that includes strengthening penalties for forced marriages and stricter financial regulation of Muslim organisations. The Telegraph has more.
Giorgia Meloni has called for a ban on the burka and niqab in public places in Italy.
The prime minister’s ruling Brothers of Italy party put forward a bill imposing fines of between £260 and £2,600 for wearing the face-covering garments in schools, universities, shops and offices.
The party called it a bill against “Islamic separatism” aimed at combating “religious radicalisation and religiously motivated hatred”.
It introduces criminal penalties for virginity testing, while strengthening punishment for forced marriages by adding religious coercion as grounds for prosecution.
The legislation also imposes transparency rules on the funding of Islamic and other religious organisations who have not reached formal agreements with the Italian state.
No Muslim organisations currently have such agreements, meaning they would have to disclose all funding sources, with financing restricted to entities that pose no threat to state security.
Ms Meloni’s Right-wing coalition government has a strong majority. The bill, which was proposed on Wednesday, is expected to pass but there is no timetable yet.

France was the first European country to introduce a blanket nationwide ban on wearing burkas in public in 2011.
Since then more than 20 states have some form of the ban on the burka and other full-face coverings in public, including Austria, Denmark, Tunisia, Belgium, Turkey, Sri Lanka, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
The European Court of Human Rights has consistently upheld these bans, including in 2017, when it upheld Belgium’s ban, ruling that states may restrict such garments to protect “living together” in society.

Fundamentally, I don’t agree with banning anything (with a few realistic exceptions), I think if mentally ill people wish to put nappies on their faces they can, but the rest of the sane population have a right to mock and ridicule them if we choose.
The Burka and Niqab is a tricky one, if you believe in freedom of choice, is it right to ban it? You can of course question how much choice the wearers actually have, but many of them will support the wearing of the garments, claiming its their choice – and in some cases it may be! Who are we to say otherwise!
They should just stipulate that they mustn’t be visible.

certainly do remember that disgraceful episode and I’m quite shocked to hear he was let off – I saw footage and while he may not have been intending to kill it certainly didn’t look accidental to me nor part of the normal cut and thrust of a physical sport. His blade was raised very high.

When I read about it I assumed the victim was on the ground but he was upright – it was basically a karate kick. Hard to think how it could have been deemed completely accidental. I would have thought as minimum it would be reckless endangerment or whatever the UK equivalent it.
