Are Advertisers Finally Realising They Need to Stop Over-Representing Black People?
I can’t be the only one who has noticed how most modern adverts now follow a formula: for every white actor, there is a black actor. This would be unremarkable if it reflected reality – but with over 80% of the UK population being white and only 4% being black, it feels forced, unnatural, almost performative.
Channel 4’s recent study, ‘Mirror on the Industry‘, confirms what many viewers have long suspected: advertising excessively overrepresents certain groups in the name of diversity, while older people, pregnant women and the true majority – white Britons – are far less visible.
The underrepresented
Despite feminism – in all of its forms – being widely glorified across the advertising world, one of the most overlooked groups comprised pregnant women, who appear in just 0.1% of adverts, despite around 50% of women having at least one child by the age of 30. In a country already anxious about declining birth rates, this near-absence further marginalises a critical stage of life, sending a subtle message about which experiences matter most to our country’s marketing departments.
Another group to be nominally represented in advertising is pensioners, who appeared in only 2% of the top 500 commercials studied. This is particularly striking given that pensioners are among society’s most affluent groups. This demographic not only possesses substantial purchasing power but also represents a growing segment of the population. The omission of pensioners from advertisements may reflect a missed opportunity for brands to engage with a financially stable and increasingly influential audience.
Marketing isn’t about morality. It’s about message, audience and resonance. The best advertising speaks directly to the customer. It understands them, reflects their aspirations, makes them feel seen. So what happens when the majority are made invisible? White Britons make up over four fifths of the UK population, yet they’re often conspicuously absent in advertising.
Are we out of the woke woods?
Could this survey mark a turning point – a formal admission that progressive marketing has strayed beyond what is reasonable or necessary? Perhaps. But a recent case study shows we are still lost deep in the woods of wokeness. Just weeks ago, Sanex’s shower gel advert was banned for “suggesting white skin is superior to black skin”.
The 28-second advert opened with a black woman covered in a clay-like substance to illustrate the discomfort of dry skin, and closed with a white woman showering; her skin clean and comforted. To most viewers, it was a simple before-and-after demonstration of a product’s effectiveness. Yet two complaints were enough for the Advertising Standards Authority to rule it must never be broadcast again.
Is this preoccupation with avoiding offence to a racial minority that is already overrepresented really necessary? It takes little observation to see the lengths to which the advertising world goes to accommodate black people; indeed, Channel 4’s study reported they were featured in over half of the 500 adverts surveyed.

What emerges from all of this is a striking imbalance: while some groups – particularly black women in fashion and beauty – are consistently elevated, others such as pregnant women and pensioners remain virtually invisible. Advertising, or ‘progressive advertising’ if you will, is supposed to reflect the society it sells to, yet current practice too often distorts that reality, overrepresenting some demographics while sidelining others. The result is not greater diversity, but a skewed picture in which the industry’s obsession with signalling inclusion ends up narrowing the range of stories it tells.

Pensioners under represented? Just watch daytime TV. It’s full of adverts aimed at pensioners. OK, it’s mainly cremation facilities and funeral plans, but pensioners nevertheless.
Don’t forget stair lifts.
Worthers Original? lol
How to reduce wrinkles and bingo wings?
But very few black pensioners. Clearly racist.
And retirement homes…
And incontinence pads
These days that sort of thing is marketed to most women over 25.
It’s true! That awful advert for tenas where the woman goes to a pop concert and sits on her partners shoulders, is enough to put anyone off for life!
😀😀😀
Down here in splendidly monocultural Somerset, you really see anyone coloured
Except in adverts. Where the majority are coloured.
There’s a reason for sayings such as
“Birds of a feather, flock together”.
And indeed, biology has show that we most favour our own.
Diversity will break is. Indeed, that is its intention
I was about to ask that very question, for anyone living in more rural, quintessentially English areas. Do you remember years ago when the makers of Midsomer Murders got told that they weren’t diverse enough, then you’d get token non-white faces popping up as extras ( then eventually speaking parts ) all over the place? It was all very contrived and I don’t think representative of the reality of such towns and villages, although I’m sure that’s now changed in many places to a degree.
Following on from the MM observation… a relative and a friend went to see a theatrical adaptation of “Little Women” yesterday. The atress/actor playing one of the sisters was black, the other three white. The friend, who had never read the book, was totally confused. How could that be? Was the fourth sister adopted? We’re all supposed to accept this so-called “colourblind casting” without question, but in cases like that, it simply doesn’t work. I won’t even start on historical drama…
Yes when historical figures are played by non-white actors it’s well into ‘ridiculous’ territory. Complete overkill. But that’s the woke mind virus for you. Total overcompensation and pandering to a small minority. Let the black actors be cast as black historical figures, because if Martin Luther King were played by a white person World War 3 would kick off. Can you imagine? ‘Equality’ only works one way, it seems.
I do think we have to be careful here: acting is by definition inhabiting the persona of who you are not; so there is a case for saying anyone should be able to portray anyone; and that includes disabled playing abled, and vice versa; and men playing when and women playing men. The key thing is the plausibility and suspension of disbelief sustainable; and that’s a matter of judgment for the casting director and the ability of the actor/actress to pull it off. I can see a case in an imaginary production for a white man playing Othello without blacking up but speaking with an Nigerian accent, if it was done well and with a purpose; similarly someone with dwarfism playing Coriolanus. If it’s to appease woke virtue signalling I completely agree: awful and embarrassing; but I think there can be counter casting for noble and effective artistic purposes, albeit rarely.
I think when it comes to race it’s important to be historically accurate, no matter what writers want to do in terms of plot lines, though artistic licence has always been a thing. Look at Elizabeth Taylor playing Cleopatra.
Had this whole ‘race swapping’ thing been even, with evidence of it working both ways, i might be inclined to agree with you. But there’s a dearth of white actors playing non-white figures. I don’t even think Dr Who should’ve changed race. Again, it’s like the woketards and oikophobes are going out of their way to prove a point and it comes across as trying too hard.
Prat.
So when have you seen a young black family living in a £12m Chelsea townhouse?…..every Sheffield flood.
In that case there would be no need for costumes, make up, and wigs. These are used to make the actors look like the characters they represent. “Look like” being the key concept here.
actually, the key thing is they have to be able to act well enough for the colour to recede into the background.
hardly any actors can do this nowadays, they are too busy flaunting themselves.
technically speaking, all actors should be anonymous and only the characters they played be memorable.
My missus is watching ‘Harlots’, an historical drama set in Georgian times. It’s quite good – when you overlook the obvious forced representation of black people in it (and the chronic forced cockney accents)
We saw an episode yesterday where a boxing match took place between a black bloke and a white bloke. I said to my missus, “You know who’s going to win this boxing match, don’t you?” Yup, as sure as politically correct eggs follow politically correct eggs, the black bloke beat the white bloke in the fight. You see, it would be racist to depict a white bloke successfully beating the black bloke.
I keep reminding myself that a good actor can play any role. However there seem to be very few black parts taken by white actors, and the public are obviously too dim to work out the change of roles now that blacking up is deprecated.
I went to Regents Park Open Air theatre a couple of weeks ago to see Brigadoon …. a play basically set in 17th century Scotland. The cast was at least 50% “ethnic minority” which, let’s face it, was not an accurate representation of 17th century Scotland.
I wonder if a fictional musical play about, say, a village in India or Zambia would have a cast made up of 50% white actors?
Don’t be daft …..
Yet you aren’t allowed to be colour blind in real life!
That’s when I stopped watching midsummer murders. Apparently it’s fine to have programmes with an all black cast, or the white person being the villain, but an all white cast is beyond the pale.
Didn’t you know that only white people thrive in a green country environment. Dark skinned people prefer something akin to their home environment, which for the Indian subcontinent seems to be dusty, dirty and overcrowded.
Only applicable to non-whites, of course. Hence the obsession with victimhood, which seems to become their whole identity;
“When people get used to preferential treatment, equal treatment seems like discrimination.” Thomas Sowell.
“for every white actor, there is a black actor.” It’s more sinister than that, families are very frequently depicted as a white female and a black/brown male, (rarely the reverse) occasionally both black and almost never both white. With resulting mixed race children. Unless of course it is a lesbian couple, in which case they will be white.
Same sex couples are also over represented in advertising.
The left demands that adverts, drama’s and films etc., are representative of society, but they are always over representative of minorities.
If 1 in 5 people in an advert were non-white that would be representative.
Not sure on the current figures for same sex couples, or mixed race couples, but I’m pretty certain its nowhere near 50% as it would appear if you judged demographics in Britain based on adverts!
Yes, including the hilariously cognitively dissonant Middle Eastern male gay couples.
If the advertising companies are based in large multi-ethnic cities, they probably think they’re doing very well at representing the population. But the last census doesn’t support their thinking. I sometimes wonder what an Alien would think of the UK if they tuned into our TV programmes. They’d probably think we were a majority black and female race, with a significant proportion of disabled people.
It’s not just the overrepresentation of ethnic minorities; adverts have been dumbed down noticeably. There is no humour, the actors are cardboard cutout figures trying to sell something in a very blatant and primitive way. It’s almost like the advertiser is trying to address some kind of “inane stupidity” that they see in their target audience.
Still, in all honesty I don’t think I have ever bought anything after seeing an advert for it. But then again, I hardly ever watch TV anyway.
There is humour in Welsh-made adverts that teature heavily on GB News, such as the bad taste gift web site and the factoring company superheros.
Not just dumbed down but incredibly crude, in particular those related to personal hygiene.
Yes, it’s a Satanic Globalist attempt to drag human consciousness down to a lower level, a lower vibrational frequency, degrading the language and images, focussing on crude bodily functions, enticing old people to make fools of themselves by chasing youth and sex, mutton dressed as lamb, instead of the old-fashioned dignity of aging gracefully, with minds focussed on higher spiritual things.
Multi-national companies with global brands have driven some of this – standardising on adverts and structure where they can. Thankfully the awfully redubbed European ads into English are largely gone. Personally I remember the eighties as a high point in tv advertising – Castella man, guinness and others relying on wit and humour, barely showing the products at all. If you want really bad though, watch 1 hour of US tv, and get 30 minutes+ of their ads….. truly awful
Have a look at 90s adverts on YouTube.
Too many ads on Youtube
I stopped shopping at Boots because of that awful advert featuring that awful racist woman. Boots has joined the list of companies I will no longer hand money over to.
Branded products are advertised on the main channels and they feature back actors but GB News is boycotted by the main advertisement industry in an attempt to close it down. The adverts on GB News are representative of the customers in general. They must be charging less because some of then are local and amateurish.
I avoid buying anything advertised on the main channels if possible and save money by buying supermarket own products.
Off-putting and patronising, most of all for Blacks.
A while back I watched a Portuguese football match on their international RTPi web feed and it was very eye opening when it came to the half time adverts. Apart from those from globalist giants, all of the actors and actresses were white. Couldn’t be more stark compared to what we get served up. Anyone noticed that most mixed couples feature a black male?
Perfect photo to illustrate this article. How hideous and repulsive she is, scowling and twirling her voodoo sorcery like an evil old witch. And in the background, a nauseating imitation of Northern European legends, replaced by Third World Ethnics.
Not just blacks being over represented. There are all sorts of other obviously politically motivated imbalances. For example, try finding a straight white male who is manly/masculine looking and behaving as opposed to a simpering idiot.
What I really want to know is who is dictating this? Is it the despicable people who work in advertising, or the customers, or both. They can all go and do one as far as I am concerned. They are my enemies.
Agreed seeing a competent male in an ad is usually rare. I see Gillette have gone back to a good looking chap, who doesn’t look too metrosexual having a shave… vs where they were going!
The point of advertising surely is to sell something and in order to be effective there has to be a degree of enticement but if an advert doesn’t connect what is the point?
The small amount of television that we watch is 90% prerecorded and because TV advertising is frankly utter crap we never watch the adverts and simply fast forward. Furthermore, given that all adverts appear to be aimed at blacks or mixed race couples / families I find I have no connection with the demographic being portrayed. In other words modern advertising fails to communicate and so I switch off, sometimes physically and other times metaphorically.
Modern advertising is therefore utterly wasted on this household although even the older, good stuff would struggle with me as I am virulent anti logo / anti brand.
Bottom line I would suggest is that modern advertising is intended to fit the globalist’s brief not the product makers.
Same for us and I agree
There is however an increase in the number of the fat, ugly, deformed, and those with skin conditions – hitherto unrepresented groups.
There’s nothing like being encouraged to buy a cosmetic by somebody with a skin disease – you too can look like this.
A friend of ours goes over to work with some (black) Antiguans from time to time and they came over to the UK for a visit recently and whilst watching British TV they remarked “Why is your TV full of black people? It is very bizarre.”
On acting in general, I never had a problem with a white actor blacking up to play Othello, which creates shock horror today. Equally, if a talented black actor wishes to play a white character, why shouldn’t he be whited up?
As for advertisements, the current over-representation by Afro-Caribbean actors is offensive, particularly as they are outnumbered in the UK by people of Indian subcontinent origin, as well as whites. And a mixed race couple is usually represented by a black husband and a white wife, rarely the other way round.
I loathe the wokeness of TV adverts and only use alternative platforms and/or ad-blockers to avoid them.Obviously I also watch as little BBC as possible.
There quite a lot here, saying that they watch “very little” BBC and mainstream telly. Fair enough and each to his own, but I am amazed how many, in 2025, still pay the tv licence and watch even one minute of “Aunty’s” * output. There is no safe level of engagement with the Beeb.
*a term used exclusively by the BBC itself and some of its employees
This has been going on for well over a decade, basically since the In-Equality Act was inflicted on us.
The best way of avoiding biased, anti-white, racist advertising is not to watch mainstream Commercial TV … ie ITV, C4 and Sky. And ignore the BBC because biased, anti-white, racism is all-pervasive in their entire output.
One group that is virtuallly absent in TV adverts is the Asian community who outnumber Afro Caribbean by at least 2 : 1. I imagine that they are simply not black enough? From this, and the underlying representation of white people, one can only conclude that the selection is significantly based on the colour of your skin which is racist no matter what the motivation.
How many Muslims can fit in Mini? – 2 in the front, two in the back and 1 in the ash tray.
Regarding colour blind casting. Unbelievable amounts of money are spent on costumes in period dramas, sometimes just to make sure the locations, manners, buttons of the dresses and coats are just right. Then historical accuracy is immediately ditched in favour of blind casting… It’s a huge distraction and rarely works. Either accuracy is important, or it isn’t. If it isn’t, then ditch the expensive wardrobe and let the acting do the work. But please don’t pretend that the motives behind blind casting are anything noble; they’re not.
Frankly I find it a huge liberation that I am a demographic of no interest to advertisers. I no longer watch television so am not forced to endure the commercials.
A few months ago I took my daughter shopping for school shoes in Clarks. The shop was enveloped in photos of black people of varying ages wearing Clarks shoes. I then sat in a cafe watching the world go by while my daughter went off with a pal looking at make up and so on. The world I watched go by for half an hour was exclusively one of white people apart from one Sikh postman. I only took note because of the Clarks photos. Tall about counter productive.
Tibetan people aged 34-35 are underrepresented. Clearly racist and ageist. When is this bigotry going to stop?
I never buy a product which features a mixed race couple as the norm, or consists of entirely black actors. This is not because I don’t like them, but because I assume that I am not the target audience and do don’t waste my time.
We have all known that the media is in the process of ‘rewiring’ our brains into the myth of our social and political identity, our history, as a glorious muti culti, multi ethnic, anti British narrative. The MSM has said this is their aim https://www.conservativewoman.co.uk/just-like-the-bbc-itv-aims-to-change-the-way-we-think/ . The Advertising Industry, under the Wokeful eye of Ofcom, is very much part of this rewiring project, a rewiring that especially aims to erase the 1939-45 heroic achievement against the most racist empire the world has seen. That is a very inconvenient truth for our fundamentalist Woke elite. It is odd that the advertisers very very rarely include Muslim women, in full Arab attire, in their adverts, not a mark of ‘diversity’ and inclusion? Another way of seeing this rewiring project is found in the psychologists’ description of coercive control and manipulation which does alter the victims’ mind set. We are the victims. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-human-equation/202510/how-gaslighting-rewires-the-brainhttps And the state compels us to be ‘racist’ through its legislation, the Equality Act sharply distinguishes people groups and religions and forces us to attend to these differences, ‘protected characteristics’ – you MUST be totally aware of different groups in order to defer to their protected characteristics, the law compels… Read more »
