Labour has sunk to its lowest ever poll rating as Andy Burnham fuels rumours he is preparing to challenge Keir Starmer for the Labour leadership by refusing to commit to serving a full term as Greater Manchester Mayor. The Mail has more.
Andy Burnham has fuelled Labour leadership rumours by refusing to commit to serving a full term as Greater Manchester Mayor.
The former minister failed to quash speculation about his plans in an interview as Keir Starmer struggles to stabilise the government.
Mr Burnham stressed his “full intention” was to remain in post until elections in May 2028. But he admitted he “didn’t know” if he would try to become an MP again if there is a by-election in a Manchester seat.
The Mayor also suggested a return would need to be a response to demands for a new leader, telling BBC local radio it would not be him “putting himself right out there again”. He ran unsuccessfully against Jeremy Corbyn in 2015.
The latest sign of manoeuvres against Sir Keir came as a poll put Labour on its lowest ever support of just 16%. The Find Out Now research found Reform was way ahead on 34% backing – although the firm has consistently detected bigger advantages for Nigel Farage’s party than other pollsters.
Mr Burnham has been the subject of frenzied interest amid the extraordinary meltdown at the heart of Downing Street.
Angela Rayner’s resignation a fortnight ago was followed by a panicky reshuffle “reset”, which was immediately derailed by the furore over Lord Mandelson.
MPs have been openly warning that Sir Keir could be “gone” by May if local elections are as bad as feared.
There have been claims that allies of Ms Rayner are mooting a comeback on a “joint ticket” with Mr Burnham.
Asked on BBC Radio Manchester why he was tied up in the speculation, Mr Burnham said: “Westminster’s in flux isn’t it… whenever Westminster’s in flux I get dragged in.”
Mr Burnham stressed he had never ruled out going back to the Commons. “I do watch what’s going on down there so I wouldn’t say not,” he said.
But he added: “This is the thing I want to get over to people – it wouldn’t be me sort of saying right I’m going to put myself right out there again. It would have to sort of come in a different direction of people…”
Pressed if he would fight a by-election in Greater Manchester if one came up, Mr Burnham said: “I honestly don’t know, it’s a hypothetical question.”
While stressing his intention of seeing out his full term as mayor, Mr Burnham said: “If events change, I’m not necessarily going to be stuck religiously in one way of thinking.”

I don’t know too much about him but to me he always seemed one of the less absurd characters certainly less bad than starmer but I also see a party hopelessly divided and frankly I think they’ll never form a govt again.

It would be a hoot if when the opportunity to lead the Labour Party and be Prime Minister comes up Andy Burnham takes a close look and decides not to put himself forward.
Why do the press refer to Burnham as the prince from beyond the seas. He is a bog standard socialist who will say what he needs to say to get elected. At present in the Labour Party that has to be very left wing.
To get elected nationally requires rather more and he has no time to assemble his message.

As soon as Rayner got her P45 I said that Burnham would be commencing manoeuvres. This little enterprise has been signed off by the devil.

Nato needs to take stock and keep its head.
Putin is goading the west into an incursion of Russian or Belarusian airspace.
His conventional military is worn out but his ego will not give in.

Here we go again. Fearful of splitting the vote, people who feel abandoned (justifiably) by the blue team or the red team will revert to their usual habits and at the next election Reform will, once again, gets loads of votes and 2.6 MPs.
I hope I am wrong. Ideally, “Tories”, “Labour” and “Reform” would get an equal number of MPs. That would keep them squabbling amongst themselves even more than now, thus leaving them all with a lot less energy to hamper Regular Joe’s life.

What is most worrying is that the overall leftist, communist, Muhamamdan vote is 40%, currently. And the right wing is just 50%. Britain is a divided nation heading for serious trouble.

Somehow I doubt it.
I remember Andy Burnham as Health Minister, nicknamed ’Dr Death’ by some. During his watch the advance of the ‘Liverpool Care Pathway’, a process where a doctor without any consultation with relatives or even their knowledge, condemns primarily elderly patients to a death by being given just water and large doses of narcotics “to end their suffering”
There were questionable, hideous cases where relatives saw perfectly lucid patients, sedated after surgery or witnessed their condition worsening, sometimes from neglect on the ward, condemned to the lingering death of the Liverpool Care Pathway. This was way before the ‘Assisted Suicide’ bill was a mere twinkle in the eye of the Labour government.
In fact the scandals about disturbingly high levels of death amongst elderly patients caused outrage and the sacking of incompetent Health Trust Execs.
All this took place under the maladministration of Dr Death and although the practice was ended after a public review in 2014, it kind of demonstrates that us oldies have always had a target on our backs when the Labour are allowed to govern and Burnham is not the person I would want holding my life in his hands.
