Funerals Should Comply With Net Zero, Says Labour
Labour wants to scrap gas cremations and make families say goodbye in eco-friendly wicker or bamboo coffins instead. The Telegraph has the story.
New rules for crematoria, drawn up by the UK environment department, are set to be upgraded to meet both new pollution standards and the UK’s commitment to reach the target of Net Zero by 2050 championed by Energy Secretary, Ed Miliband.
Under the plan, the Government will seek to cut emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants, including mercury from dental fillings, and airborne toxins from burning coffin glue and embalming fluid.
Draft rules also suggest crematoria burn bodies one after another, with no gap to retain heat and save on gas – a tough target for an industry that relies almost entirely on gas-fired ovens. …
Defra makes clear that the burning coffin and corpse will still generate emissions even if powered by green electricity.
There is, however, a downside to cremations powered by electricity which is that they take much longer. Cremations in gas ovens “range from as little as 50 minutes to more than two hours, depending upon body size”, but “cremation times on electric cremators are longer”, the guidelines warn.
Industry estimates suggest that cremating a large corpse would take up to three hours in a crematorium powered by low carbon electricity – twice as long as with gas. …
The costs could however be huge. [Mike Birkinshaw, of the Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities] estimates it will cost the industry £18 million or £55,000 for each crematorium, just to fit equipment to remove nitrous oxides.

Gross!
Whoever these people are that come up with such insane ideas should be placed in a secure mental asylum and the keys thrown away.
It’s what you get when you set people on some “optimization” task with complete disregard for any considerations except reducing the value of a single variable. It’s pretty certain that almost anything in life (or death) can be changed such that its CO₂ emissions are reduced and for this particular case, any absolute reduction, no matter how tiny or expensive, is considered worthwhile¹.
One could call this institutional or procedural monomania. The mad people aren’t those who come up with these ideas (although they may well be mad, too) but the people who ordered this to be done.
¹ One could also argue that it’s the exact opposite: As the people in control of this damn well know that no amount of CO₂ reduction in the UK will make any difference, their goal is really to spend as much money and effort on reducing CO₂ as possible so that other people will hopefully believe that the amount hard work which goes into CO₂ reduction means that it simply must make sense.
The aim of Marxist Socialists is the ruination of the capitalist free market economy to bring about collapse of society so they subjugate the population, make them dependent, treat them like serfs and take power and control to further their own ambitions.
We are well on the way.
They are in a mental asylum – it’s called the House of Commons. The place is full of people who are bonkers and out of touch with reality.
I’d just put them in one of their planet friendly crematoria. If it’s green, it almost certainly won’t function as intended, so the result will be an unusable useless crematorium, and a locked up Civil Servant. Brucey Bonus.
Labour are literal death eaters.
As has been said before, YOU are the carbon “they” want to reduce.
Is there no end to this ‘mad Ed’ inspired lunacy? These rules have absolutely zero compassion for the berieved. I don’t know about “draft rules” but “daft rules”.
and they are dead serious…. sorry
This is surely the final nail in the ⚰ coffin! Sorry x2 😳
It’s a hill they’re willing to die on.
Just a bunch of burnt out losers.
The last shreds of their credibility have just gone up in flames.
Why don’t we just bury them? Oh sorry, labour want to build houses on cemeteries. We could just have funeral pyres like in India.
Ooh, naughty naughty. Think of the emissions
There is no depth these despicable people will not stoop to, they lack even basic humanity.
From a funeral director friend, “wicker and bamboo coffins ‘leak & creek'”, not very pleasant for those at the funeral.
I’d heard that as well Sim, my pal does a bit of part time pall bearing to top up his beer money, he says they bloody stink and ruins his only suit..
Labour now taxing the dead as well as the living.
Already – inheritance tax.
Love the moniker
the greenest thing to do would be to eat the raw corpse, as an immediate recycle. It would bring a whole new meaning to the wake.
Daphuq…?! 😵 😆
I’m donating my body to medical science, but then I saw the awesome Body Worlds and was blown away, so I’ll go this route. I figured I like the idea of being more of an exhibitionist in death than I ever was in life. 🤭

Not very vegan though
No problem. I want to be fly tipped anyway.
Can we do sea burials nowadays..? Seems a good way to go? Only bio degradable clothing/shrouds and a needle through the nose too to make sure…?
Gasp! The needle will be a hazard to marine life.
How many flies will be needed?
Or flushed down the toilet, like his wife requested in Captain Fantastic.
“… powered by low carbon electricity…”
There is no such thing. All electricity is 100% “carbon” because intermittent wind/solar requires 100% fossil fuel back-up and whether the fossil fuel generator is feeding the grid of not, it is still burning fossil fuel. Spooling up and spooling down to accommodate intermittency burns more fossil fuels than constant steady operation, just like accelerating, braking, accelerating a car uses more fuel than steady, constant speed.
“Low carbon electricity” is a fetish of the climate change religion obsessives.
The Labour Party seems obsessed with death. Not only do they seem to have a self-imposed death wish with their approval ratings plumetting, but they have passed a bill legalising abortion up to birth, are pushing the assisted dying (suicide) bill, and are now coming for us after we have died. From cradle to grave we are not safe. If they are concerned about the pollutants from mercury in dental fillings perhaps we could have our teeth removed by the undertaker in the chapel of rest thus avoiding the problem.
My husband and I would be perfectly happy with “Sky burials”, which would fit the net-zero agenda perfectly.
Perhaps they could provide some dakhma (Towers of Silence).
Sadly, I suspect our local authority would have a fit of the vapours if we requested this.
A few words from my mate, a former cremation technician:
Biggest load of bollocks. The gases are burned off in a secondary chamber, and the gas is only used to initially heat the Cremators to working temperature, and for the last 5-10 mins of the cremation. Bottom line, very little gas is used. And, ultimately, doesn’t matter which fuel you use to cremate a body and coffin, the body amd coffin will still burn the same giving off emissions anyway.
More insanity even when you die. You couldn’t make it up. Net Zero, an invented soundbite to increase control and apply more green taxes. A massive scam.
I thought the newest idea was boil in the bag funerals. The body put in a bag and chemicals added to dissolve it, then flush it down the sewer. Not fussed about the effect on drinking water though.
Some years ago I read about being freeze-dried so the body would just shatter into tiny pieces. No doubt they’ll say that’s not eco-friendly either.
It’s a vote winner
Slash and burn government
Who cares what Liebour think? It may be almost 4 years until the next election but they’re already dead and buried.
These are really dangerous people especially when they are really moronic as well. Not every cremation can be in wicker. My recently departed partner had to have a conventional sealed coffin due to the injuries which caused her death. She would have wanted wicker. We tried but public health would not allow it especially as the coroner service (being civil servants) are so behind with a long waiting list that the body had deteriorated too much for anything other than sealed.
As usual the government ‘experts’ are fifth rate, academics, only employable in a government job and know nothing of realities. Yet they try to rule us. I’d burn the lot of them, and to hell with the emissions.
Sorry for your loss.
“No cremation for you mate….too many carbon inducing air miles….enough to get to the Moon and back.”
Utter lunacy.
You can’t cremate people one after the other.
Families go to the crematorium to say goodbye in a very personal way to their loved ones. Let’s just have a conveyor belt instead, with no respect.
I want to be the chief dancer at Milibands funeral.
The Cretins even want to have control over our very last moments!
