Firms That Downsized After Covid Struggling to Find Office Space
Companies that downsized after Covid are wanting to move back into bigger, newer offices but are finding that there is next to no space available – because everyone thought work-from-home was going to be the new normal. The Times has the story.
The trend during the pandemic was to move to better but smaller offices, with bosses and workers expecting working from home to stick around. However, more businesses are now asking their staff to come back into the office more regularly, which has led to growing demand for bigger spaces.
One boss of a national consulting firm admitted his mistake, saying: “In lockdown I had to look into a crystal ball and predict our future ways of working and got it wrong.”
Stephen Inglis, Chief Executive of Regional Reit, which owns dozens of office blocks outside of London, name-checked Deloitte, the Big Four accountant, as one of those with downsizing regrets.
“They probably downsized too much, as did some of the banks, and they have some of the biggest [office space] requirements in the market just now,” he said, adding that most businesses wanted to be in “the very best space. But we’ve run out. There is little to no ‘prime’ space available in regional cities.”
That reflects a combination of the increased demand amid that ‘flight to quality’ but also the dearth of construction during the pandemic when few developers wished to bet on how demand for offices would hold up.

“New Normal”, eh?
I wanted to punch all the talking heads in the “leadership” positions at the company which employed me at that time who repeatedly spouted objectionable things like this, at every available opportunity:
“We are all going to have to get used to the New Normal, pandemics like these are going to become more frequent owing to Climate Change. Stay Safe, folks!”
Yeah that phrase is a trip down memory lane
“everyone thought work-from-home was going to be the new normal”
It seems to me it was until firms started insisting people came into the office more. Most people I know have no enthusiasm for commuting into London. Our firm where people have complete freedom of choice is at about 10% office attendance compared to before lockdowns. So if there is a “problem” it seems like it’s of these firms’ own making.
Off topic I am in a small tourist town on the Sicilian coast. The local council seems to have done a lot of work to make the place more appealing. There is an Italian flag flying from the flagpole near the sea wall, almost certainly an official effort. Someone in officialdom seems like they still have pride in their country.
And I am in Sardinia, where Italian flags are numerous and Sardinian flags ubiquitous. The Sardi flag is particularly interesting: “It shows a red cross (the Cross of St. George) on a white field, with a Moor’s head in each of the four quadrants; the four Moorish heads represent defeated Muslim rulers”. So, no lack of national/regional pride here.
Like the logo of Birra Ichnusa, of which I am fond
I live in Italy and it seems to me they have avoided most of the woke self hating shit that is destroying England apparently.
For example, the carabinieri dress and behave like proper smart policemen and malefactors periodically get shot.
Yes I would agree with that. It’s a country with a lot going for it, though I think I am too English to live there full time – and the same goes for my wife, who is Italian 🙂
Shame what happened there during “covid”, and a shame they are still in the EU.
BREAKING NEWS.

If even Trump has put out a statement then it must be true. There were conflicting reports for a while, many saying he was alive but in a critical condition. He was shot in the neck, the shooter is still at large. The suspect they had in custody is not the shooter.
Sicko Leftards and trans mafia having a field day with this on Twitter. Absolutely tragic. 😭

The poor lad was only 31 and with a wife and three children. It is utterly awful. Absolutely dreadful.
Glad you are back Mogs.😉
Seconded, good to see you Mogs.
As someone who works from home 3 days a week, I prefer to work from home. Much better quality of life.
