Pupils Who Want to be Doctors ‘Barred’ From Vital Work Experience at NHS Hospitals – Because They go to Private School
Some of the UK’s top NHS trusts are effectively blocking private-school pupils from vital medical work experience. The Mail has the story.
The Mail on Sunday can reveal that official schemes at world-famous London hospitals, including Barts and University College London Hospital (UCLH), are only open to local state schools.
Meanwhile King’s College Hospital Trust, which includes King’s College Hospital – one of the largest teaching hospitals – gives “priority to those not attending a private school”, as does South London and Maudsley NHS Trust.
Last night critics accused the NHS of discrimination and being “infected by Labour’s vendetta against independent education”.
The British Medical Association strongly advises pupils who want to be doctors that they need clinical work experience to even be considered for a medical degree.
But now thousands of children, including those on bursaries – around a third of the estimated 650,000 private-school pupils in the UK – are struggling to find work experience at key hospitals.
One would-be medical student from Emanuel School in South London was told by King’s College Hospital Trust – their local NHS trust – that pupils from private schools were not admitted on to their courses, even if they lived in the area.
And the MoS has learned of another, on a 100% bursary, who “applied to every hospital trust and GP practice within an hour of her home” including Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Northampton General Hospital and Milton Keynes University Hospital but “received either rejections or no responses from almost all” because of the school she attends. …
It is the latest in a series of NHS policies which discriminate against private pupils revealed by the MoS, including the case of an eight year-old boy turned away for treatment by Kingston and Richmond NHS Trust because he went to a private school.
This newspaper also exposed the cases of a girl in Somerset who was refused mental health treatment by her local NHS Trust as she was privately educated.

I find it hard to believe that the children of medics attending private schools will be excluded.
It’ll be the private school pupils with no parent or close relative as a medic. Worse still if they are of white ethnicity. The same theme exists at scale in the state sector.

one can only hope that the Cabinet and its supporters have the lucky chance to have themselves or their offspring treated by an inadequate diversity and equity hire.
You might also want to talk to UK born junior doctors who are being bypassed on their first senior appointments by people from India and other countries who are in their countries fully experienced over more years but who want to come here as the wages etc are better and they are being given the jobs in preference for our own native home grown young Doctors.
Likewise wheras it used to be that those medical graduates with top grades on graduation would go on to the best teaching hospitals now, they are now thrown into the lottery whereby regardless of grades they are sent to any random hospital, which begs the question why would a student bother to work extra hard to achieve a really good grade, when they can just coast in with a 3rd and still get into a premium placement.
Its a mess, once again we are seeing competence and hard work sacrificed on the altar of diversity, and cheap migrants.
No surprises here and I suspect that many non South Asian medics leave the NHS and the country for this reason. Based on career experience in the corporate sector, I would imagine that there is substantial bias by South Asian managers to hire South Asians and few others, as well as provide work experience to the same. Highly likely that there will also be a difference in how the non South Asian hires are treated, eg good luck if you are an East Asian immigrant working for a South Asian immigrant. Could we please see some real stories on what it is like for non South Asians to work for South Asians in the NHS? I am guessing there are serious issues, especially with first generation immigrant medics now in senior positions. This issue is a well known one in the corporate sector and not only in Britain but in Singapore, the Gulf States, and the US tech sector. Of course, in Britain it is never openly discussed but it most certainly is in the other countries listed above. There are even more distortions that the one of this article. At both my daughters’ state schools, it was highly noticeable that those who had one or more close relatives as a medic, were far more likely to have had high quality work experience. A still further observation was that non white ethnicity pupils had a much high higher likelihood of obtaining decent (hospital or GP practice) work experience. As ever, the DEI mantras influenced events. So, if a pupil was of white ethnicity and also had no close relatives as medics then their chances of decent work experience were about zero. This, of course, was most of the pupils, so the entire work experience saga is, like so much else in Britain, totally distorted and biased against the majority population and culture. Directly contacting hospitals for work experience produced responses that ‘all work experience candidates are selected via a rigorous, impartial, process’. Observations of the outcomes showed such statements to be total nonsense. It thus becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.
This is outrageous discrimination.
