St Augustine Pictured as Black in Children’s Book Published by Church of England

The Church of England has sparked outrage by portraying St Augustine as black in a new children’s book as part of its diversity drive. The Mail has the story.

The saint, one of the most influential figures in Christian history, has been illustrated as black in a new book called Heroes of Hope.

This book says it seeks to inspire children with examples of “black and brown saints, often erased and whitewashed from history, who formed the church and therefore modern society as we know it today”.

Aurelius Augustinus was born in 345 AD in a Mediterranean coastal town now in modern-day Algeria, going on to become a bishop of the North African settlement of Hippo.

Over the years, most depictions of St Augustine have been of a white man.

At that time in history, the area was a Roman province, although Augustine and his mother Saint Monica may have originated from the North African Berber ethnic group.

Although this would not make him black, there have been efforts to apply this identity to him by some groups, including at the Catholic University of Villanova in Pennsylvania.

An official at the university wrote in 2023 that it was important to depict the saint as black because “depicting St Augustine as a Black man actively decentres whiteness”.

Heroes of Hope was co-authored by The Rev Dr Sharon Prentis, who was appointed the deputy director of the Church of England’s Racial Justice Unit in January 2023.

The unit was set up in 2022, in the wake of Black Lives Matter protests, to help meet the Church’s commitments to achieving racial justice. …

The CoE’s St Augustine portrayal comes in the wake of the previous Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev Justin Welby, calling the church “deeply institutionally racist” in 2020. …

It was revealed in 2023 that Church of England schools were being taught the “pyramid of white supremacy” anti-racism theory.

The theory was displayed to schools in a graphic put together by the US-based Equality Institute, which describes itself as a “global feminist agency working to advance gender equality and end violence against women and girls”.

The document explicitly told teachers to use “visuals” including the pyramid to “help pupils understand how bias, stereotypes and prejudice can lead to racist words and actions, leading to physical harm and death”.

Worth reading in full.

Would be fascinating to be able to know who his father was, olive skinned Roman possibly in view of his name. Almost as ridiculous as the claims of evidence of a fantastically wealthy black woman living in Roman York, because of the grave goods she had, which ignores the reality of her probably being a slave prostitute brought from Africa. Slaves were allowed to acquire wealth and buy their freedom but many house slaves would have chosen not to for the better life they had.

Augustine was born in Algeria. “Augustine’s father Patricius was a decurio, a minor official of the Roman empire. Patricius was a pagan, an adherent of the Roman civic religion.

North Africa at that time was mostly peopled by Mediterraneans. The Phoenicians had spread along the North African coast from the Lebanon area. The modern North African Arabs arrived with Islam.

Isn’t it convenient how these particular Christians ( especially the lady, given her ethnicity ) don’t acknowledge the many black Christians continuously being slaughtered by black extremists in parts of Africa, or minorities such as the Druze and Yezidis ( along with more Christians ) getting massacred in places like Syria, when creating that stupid and insulting ‘pyramid of pants’ crock? Because as long as the perpetrators are not white these particular genocides are strangely ignored, because the facts don’t support the ‘white people are oppressors’ narrative. Black and brown people are being murdered en masse by other black and brown people, also taken as slaves. But keep on banging that tedious drum of anti-white hate and fabricating your own version of reality ad infinitum; ”Nigeria continues to be the deadliest country in the world for Christians. The West African nation ranks seventh on the 2025 World Watch List by Open Doors, which tracks persecution globally. The ICC reports notes that between July 2009 and March 2022, more than 45,000 Christians were murdered by extremist groups such as Boko Haram, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), and Fulani militants. In 2022 alone, around 5,000 Christians were killed in Nigeria – more… Read more »

Undesirable behaviour? There’s nothing but “lefty labelling” of “undesirable opinions” in this pyramid right up to the second level. You have to take into account that “Neo Nazis” is meant to include Donald Trump, Elon Musk, everyone who believes that so-called grooming gangs actually exist and everyone who ever demanded that illegal immigrants ought to be deported (that’s a call for violence in the language of the people who created the picture).

The shortended version is: Everybody who disagrees with any policy of the US left is a genocidal mass murderer in the making aka “a Nazi.” Nothing new on the left.

This is not surprising. The form of racialism known as anti-whitism has as its central goal white erasure. To that end Whites, the people who created the greatest civilisation in history, must be portrayed as world poisoners.

Not quite. Traditional Marxism says the capitalists, the owners of the means of production in the age of capitalism, are the oppressors and must be eliminated. The bourgeoise are just better off proletarians, people who also have to work to make a living but who in league with the capitalists. They are to be eliminated as well, but because they’re class traitors who can’t be trusted.

Well, that depends on his hair, believe it or not.

The most fundamental genetic characteristic of Ethnic Europeans = “White People”, which distinguishes them from all other ethnic groups on the planet, is that White People Cannot Have True Black Hair.

They can have all other colours, including very dark brown hair that lightens in summer sunlight, but NOT BLACK HAIR.

Look around the world at all the other ethnic groups, all with BLACK HAIR:
Ethnic Orientals, Ethnic Africans, Ethnic Indian Subcontinentals including Roma people, and all the Semitic peoples, and everyone from South America to Polynesia to Eskimos.

93% of humanity have black hair.

The Globalists have been brainwashing White People into looking less white by persuading them to get suntans and use artificial tanning products, as well as injecting their thin European lips with silicone to make them swell up and look more Ethnic African, and covering their white skin with tattoos.

Meanwhile, they are persuading Ethnic Africans to have operations to make their lips look thinner (like a certain news presenter), or to dye their hair blond or red or light brown, and persuading Ethnic Orientals to get eye operations to remove the epicanthal fold, and to actually have their children’s legs medically broken and slowly stretched to make them taller!!! I guess they have traditional experience of this from ancient foot-binding.

Many Ethnic Oriental people appear to have extremely white skin from careful avoidance of the Sun, for example, but it is BLACK HAIR that separates non-whites from White People.

“Just as two blond parents can never have anything other than blond children.”

Not sure about that.

“…appear to have extremely white skin from careful avoidance of the Sun…”

The skin is “white” or it isn’t. Not sure what the sun has to do with it. What is “white”, anyway?

A Polish friend of mine is as European as they come and she has straight, black hair. Meaning, BLACK.

What points are you trying to make?

Heretic
Heretic

1) If two blond parents have anything other than a blond child, it is either the woman’s infidelity, or a hospital swap, either accidental (unlikely) or deliberate, which happens more often than most people realize. Two dark-haired parents can have blond, red, or dark-haired children, because they still carry recessive genes, though hidden by the dark-haired dominant genes. Blond people do not carry dark-haired dominant genes, because their blondness is an expression of their recessive genes.

2) I already told you that BLACK HAIR is the most fundamental genetic characteristic that distinguishes Ethnic Europeans from all other Ethnic Groups. Black-haired people can have very pale skin from sun avoidance, as I’ve already said, but their BLACK HAIR marks them out as Non-Ethnic European.

3) It is what it is.

The Berbers of today are quite a mixed bunch in terms of phenotypes, with everything from very fair complexion to very dark skin. Maybe this has something to do with their past involvement in raiding the European coastline for slaves. Something that is confirmed by DNA testing. I don’t know what the Berbers were like before that.

What is known however is that they formed the major part of the North African population prior to the Arab conquests. After that they became degraded to second class citizens, which is why many of them supported French colonialism, especially when the French restored many of their rights to them. The Berbers in return were quicker than the Arabs to adopt the French language and lifestyle, which is why many of them ended up in the Algerian civil service and so on, and thus became the targets of reprisals after Algeria regained independence.

As others on here have said, “St” Augustine was probably a Berber, but regardless of his ethnicity, he was an evil man, one of many foolishly canonized by the Vatican. Here’s why: Jesus (prounounced “E-zus” as there is no “J” in Hebrew) never claimed to be Almighty God, creator of Heaven and Earth. He never mentioned any “Trinity”, and always called himself the “Son of Man”, referring to God like everyone else as the Father. When told by the disciples that his mother was outside wanting to speak to him, he asked them “Who is my mother?” The whole Trinity Lie was invented in order to elevate E-zus to equality with God (E-ah-weh), so that the Impostor Mary, who kidnapped him at birth from E-lizabeth and his twin brother John (E-on) the Baptist the True Christ, could be elevated ABOVE Almighty God, as the “Mother of God”. That Lie has persisted for 2000 years, and the Evil Athanasius was instrumental in forcing it upon Christianity, even going to the lengths of poisoning Arius, just as the Evil Augustine was instrumental in forcing the Lie of Original Sin and the Utter Depravity of Humanity upon Christianity, in order to justify his… Read more »

Thank you. I have repeatedly stated here (and been roundly admonished by the majority) that Jesus of Nazareth knew he was not “of God”. And if he were alive today (he isn’t, and, no, he isn’t coming back, either), he would be dismayed to find that we had turned him into one – precisely that which he told us not to do!

Heretic

Wow! I can’t believe you said that, and that someone actually agrees with me, for the first time in donkey’s years!

Yes, Jesus kept referring his disciples to his Father, but they didn’t listen. And when they asked him what God looked like, and when he said basically “He looks like me” (in other words, that when God chooses to take human form, he looks like a human), later theologians twisted his words to mean that Jesus was claiming to be God himself, which he NEVER DID.

No, I cannot agree with that. But what most Christians don’t realize is that Michaelangelo’s depiction of God with his angels reaching out to give life to the human form of Adam contains a very strange female figure sitting in naked obscurity next to the figure of God. Michaelangelo has actually included her as the Jewish “Shekinah”, God’s Mind-Controlled Sex Slave, worshipped by millions of Idiot Jews at the Wailing Wall with their depraved “davening” movements “copulating with the goddess”, as described by Heroic Jewish convert to Christianity Brother Nathanael in his video “Satan at the Wailing Wall”. She is also summoned into Jewish homes on Saturday nights.

Or a flame-haired Irishman I knew who was born in Singapore from Irish parents, so that makes him “Indonesian”? No.

If you were born from German parents on an Air Egypt flight flying over Egypt, does that make you “Egyptian”? No.

No, I mean that people born in the USA to (in all likelyness) two parents who were already citzens of the USA are proper USAns/ Americans. Which implies they don’t have a nationality in the European sense, but belong to the transatlantic proposal-nation. That everybody in the USA and not just Kamala Harris is a descendant of immigrants, even the so-called natives who originally came from eastern Asia, is of no concern for this.

Almost all (or even all) of our current madness is really waves made by US domestic politics reaching European shores. St. Augustine is pictured as “black guy” in books distributed by the CoE because the US Democrats have a certain method for chasing the black vote. And I’m pretty tired of this. I have nothing against Americans in general. But I must insist on being completely uninterested in their internal political haggling. Whether the current president of the US of A is called Donald Biden or Joe Trump doesn’t matter to me. Neither does historical legal discrimination of people based on skin colour in God’s own country.

They’re different things for proposal-nationalists. I’ve purposely used nationality here because German nationality has been defined on the so-called ius sanguinis (law of the blood) until the first Red/Green coalition led by Gerhard Schröder started to ‘amend’ this by abusing a provision in the German fundamental law meant to enable naturalization of ethnic Germans whose ancestors emigrated from Germany before 1871.

Yes Augustine was of Berber Romano stock, semitic as were the Phoenicians. This relentless witchhunt, the very reverse of historical interpretation but a marxist reading of the UK history as a litany of absolute wrong, is being funded by the taxpayer. It needs to stop as with the National Trust etc etc. The UK has links to slavery: 1066 was the start of the subjugation of and feudalision of the inhabitants of England by the Normans. Every village and town was subject to it. The Vikings inflicted enslavement on thousands of inhabitants of England in their continual warfare and plunder of the Christian towns of England. Augustne in the slave markets of North Africa spoke of Anglo Saxon children being sold as slaves as ‘angels not Angles’. The mad exegesis of the activists who are now running Whitehall’s agencies and the C of E is a reading into history of a marxist view, not a neutral reading of the facts and their development. It is propaganda, not history at all. Note that the Arab slave trade is never mentioned by the marxist activists, odd?
