Don’t Put Expensive Items at Front of Stores, Labour Tells Shopkeepers

As shoplifting soars to record levels across the country, Labour has told shopkeepers not to put expensive items at the front of stores… The Telegraph has the story.

Dame Diana Johnson, the policing minister, said products such as bottles of alcohol should not be displayed at the front of stores because people will steal them.

It comes amid growing pressure on the police to tackle a shoplifting epidemic, with a record high of nearly three thefts carried out every minute in the year to March. …

Speaking on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme, Dame Diana said: “I think we need to have that neighbourhood police presence. I think stores need to play their part in making sure that items that are high value are not at the front of the store because that is an issue in some stores, that they put bottles of alcohol at the front of the store which obviously people will nick.

“If they are going to steal to resell they will nick items like that. So I think it is not just one thing here, it has to be an approach with the retailers, with the Government and with the police to work together.” …

Dame Diana also warned against members of the public stepping in to confront and tackle shop thieves as she said it was not “appropriate”. …

The issue of shoplifting has risen to prominence in recent days after the Telegraph disclosed that Rob Davies, a North Wales shopkeeper, after repeated thefts had put up a handwritten note in his store that read: “Due to scumbags shoplifting, please ask for assistance to open cabinets.”

But officers from North Wales Police attended his retro shop in Wrexham and told him to consider changing the wording because it was offensive.

It has also emerged that the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has advised retailers that putting up images of thieves in a local area “may not be appropriate” because it could violate suspects’ data rights. …

Richard Walker, the executive chairman of the Iceland supermarket chain, said on Wednesday morning that every part of the country was now affected by serious crime in shops and it was getting worse because offenders appeared to be able to act with “impunity”.

He told the BBC Today programme: “We now have over 1,000 serious incidents a year, serious incidents being marauding gangs, violent assaults, needles, knives, hammers, you name it.

“I go through our weekly serious incidents report every Monday morning and it is clear that firstly there is now no area of the country unaffected by this issue, it happens everywhere from small market towns through to big inner cities.

“But secondly, and importantly, there is an impunity, an increasing level of violence that is caused by a lack of deterrent.” …

Last September, Dame Diana had her purse stolen while delivering a speech to senior officers about an “epidemic” of theft.

“The Shoppers Union this week issued advice to police forces on how to apprehend and charge thieves during the current upsurge in shoplifting crime.

“‘Shopkeepers and customers have been very professional in their approach to these issues,’ said a spokesperson, Bettina Shawcross. “but if we are all to pull together the police have to do their bit as well.'”

In other news, a 35 year old woman named Bettina Shawcross was arrested yesterday morning in a dawn raid by eight policemen in riot gear, and several electronic devices were seized. She was released without charge at 3am this morning.

Meanwhile the Police Federation have issued a statement following an overwhelming number of hurty comments across all social media suggesting that the plods are too busy out jogging instead of dealing with shoplifting and burglaries…

British Police Forces are committed to the maintenance of law and order in the yookay and we will be following up all reports of slanderous commentary directed at our hard-working drivers. Persistent offenders will be tracked down wherever they are and will be prosecuted convicted over the next available weekend. You have been warned.”

Instead I think members of the public SHOULD intervene, with violence if necessary.

It should be obvious that where the police fails in its simple task, which it carried out perfectly well for over 100 years then the public should step in.

Not complicated.

The police are so far up their own fundaments it’s incredible – they are civilians too.

And never let the fuckers forget it.

No one who knows anything about how the police and legal system operate in the UK is going to intervene with violence. They know they’ll be the ones prosecuted.

Good grief how patronising, I’m sure the shop managers would never have thought of that without government advice. Meanwhile in our local Co-op there are two packs of salmon locked in perspex boxes and empty jars of coffee you have to take to the till to exchange for the real thing.

Totally agree. What an empty vessel this woman is. Talk about stating the bleeding obvious….. No doubt she thinks she’s solved the problem….. F. F. S.

One would have to possess a heart of stone not to laugh.

In the same way rape victims were blamed for wearing very short skirts, or walking down dark streets.

It is all part and parcel of what constitutes Starmer’s Labour.

Perhaps the justification for the confiscation of our lifetime savings through higher and wider Inheritance Tax will be a concern by Rachel from Compliance about our safety. If we have nothing left the thieves will leave us alone, after all.

Just put all the healthy foods at the front (fruit, veg, water), and the expensive stuff out of easy reach and the thefts will probably end.

Victim blaming, much?

Of course, it is the shop keeper’s fault. Silly them for putting their goods on display. Diana johnson is a Dame so she obviously knows what she is talking about. Perhaps she should instruct all shops to follow the example of Macdonalds or Argos where everything is ordered, and paid for, from a machine and the goods eventually appear at the counter some minutes later. No possibility there of running off with the goods without paying.

Ooh no, if I nip in for a loaf of bread and some bits, I want to pick my own bread etc with the longest dates! I’ve watched staff in store doing online shops and they very rarely check the dates on anything, just grab and put it in the boxes.

Perhaps security staff at front of house should be issued with long reach cattle prods or tasers and zap the thieving toe rags to incapacitate them until PC Plod arrives…

Genuine shoppers are stung with high prices every time they shop. It’s only fair that non-payers suffer some pain, too. After all, we are encouraged to focus on equality and inclusivity.

Why not have turnstiles to enter shops. It’s getting that way. Diana’s advice blames the victim. Take temptation away from the criminal. An extreme would be banning unaccompanied women and girls from leaving their homes! I’ve heard that somewhere.

I don’t know about turnstiles to enter shops, but round our way there are electronic gates to exit Lidl – you can only get out by scanning your receipt.

Receipts – that’s another bugbear when shopping. Famous last words “do you want a receipt?” – course I want a receipt. Firstly to check I’ve not been overcharged, yet again, because the shelf edge labels are incorrect. Second, proof of purchase (for a guarantee if appropriate) or if I need to return an item.

Don’t put expensive hotel accommodation and benefits as a temptation for migrants to break into your country

In another Far Left ruled shithole – California – shops either closed down in high crime areas, ie most cities, or resorted to having all the stock the other side of a barrier and you have the ask for EVERYTHING. I suppose here it could move to a Screwfix type thing where you can order everything online and they tell you when it is ready for collection.

With people like this ‘dame’ I wonder how Sharon Davies feels about being made one? It has become a kind of insult these days as we had ‘Baroness’ Jackboots Jacqui Smith – noted for being an expenses cheat as she claimed her main residence was her sister’s spare room while claiming mortgage payments from the taxpayer for her house which magically became her manin home when appropriate to avoid CGT – drivelling on how the record number of illegal immigrant rapists and criminals crossing Channel after 13 months of Labour is nothing to do with their failure.
