The British state has only the vaguest idea how many people live in the UK, legally or otherwise, says Michael Simmons in the Telegraph, with thousands of migrants overstaying their visas and purposefully slipping into illegality. Here’s an excerpt.
Thousands of migrants who came here legally on work or student visas overstay and purposefully slip into illegality. The state’s ability to track them seems non-existent. They could be anywhere, doing anything – and Whitehall wouldn’t know.
Just a month ago, the Commons’ Public Accounts Committee found the Home Office had accidentally opened Britain’s doors to record levels of migration. Officials “made changes to the Skilled Worker visa route without a full assessment of the risks or potential impacts, including the risks of non-compliance with visa rules and exploitation of migrant workers.”
Those “risks of non-compliance” are no longer hypothetical – they are happening. The Committee’s report urged civil servants to do more to monitor compliance when visas expire.
Shocking as this is, it’s hardly surprising. The British state has only the vaguest idea of how many people live in the UK – legally or otherwise. The evidence is everywhere. There are 63.8 million patients registered with GP practices in England, but according to the ONS the entire population is 58.6 million. During Covid, some local health areas even managed the mathematically miraculous feat of vaccinating more than 100% of their population.
We saw the same blind spot during Brexit: the campaign group ‘the3million’ was so named because it was thought there were three million EU citizens in Britain. The real number? Closer to six million.
Migration statistics are in constant flux, and they are never revised down. The net migration figures released at the end of last year would have matched the record had the same dataset not quietly revised up 2023’s figure – at the height of the Boriswave – by 166,000 to 906,000. When it comes to knowing who is entering the country, the government is just guessing and it’s guessing badly.
These statistical black holes have real consequences. Last year’s revisions to the nation’s headcount meant GDP per capita in the second quarter may have fallen by twice the officially reported rate. The domino effect is obvious: find a few hundred thousand extra people down the back of the sofa and the entire economic story of the country – past and future – changes overnight.

Thanks for the laugh. Mad mass unlimited unvetted immigration is not an accident, a mistake, a slip-up, or a piece of incompetence. It is the fundamental policy of the British Establishment. It is motivated partly by the Establishment’s death-wish, and partly by the extraordinary hatred the Establishment has for the native peoples of our country. The Establishment wants us gone from our country. This is why our safety and well-being are being dismantled. This is why the Establishment has abolished free-speech, and replaced it with government-approved speech.
Difficult to disagree with these comments.
The problems is that when nefarious terms like “The Establishment”, “The Masters of the Universe”, “The Globalists”…appear to be behind the destruction of the West, conspiracy theories (some very unpleasant) arise.
Often the answer to the question “Who are those people?” is given as “The Whitehall blob”, “The City Financiers”, “The Socialists”, ie more generalisations. But again never any specific Names.
Perhaps, a fellow commenter might be able to furnish us with names, even if it’s only the names of members of the Establishment.
There may be some shadowy figures but I don’t think we need them – the ones in plain sight are sufficient to start with. I mean you can nominate them yourself- pretty much everyone in a position of power in most rich world countries for the last few decades. Conspiracy or just the direction things are taking? I don’t pretend to know, but thinking that the rich and powerful don’t talk to each other behind closed doors or collude to mutual advantage seems a bit naive.
What are these “unpleasant” “conspiracy theories” to which you allude? Many things in life are unpleasant. Reality is often unpleasant. The truth is often unpleasant. I’m pretty open minded but certainly think everything is up for debate. But then I am that rare creature a free speech absolutist.

I saw somewhere that you can get a pretty good idea of the population by adding up how much food is sold in the supermarkets. I believe that gave a much higher number than official estimates.
I was also going to suggest you could measure the amount of sewage produced, but this government can’t keep track of that, either.
Our government generates endless sewage already. The last one did too, but the current one is unbelievably full of sh1t.

The Political Class are utterly pathetic. Events and issues, such as illegal migration and terrorism, do not occur by accident. The intention of having a digital global ID system that tracks and records the actions of the tax-cattle on the predatory ruler’s tax-farms has been a long held ambition. The intention of having a digital currency linked to such a tax-cattle system, the intention of fining the human herd for petty transgressions and withdrawing ‘privileges’ to force compliance, the intention of making us never question that 2+2 equals 5 is all won for the sycophantic psychopaths who do the bidding of the predatory ruling class by this panopticon system.
