Asylum Seekers Use Taxpayer Handouts to Fund Gambling Habits
Asylum seekers are using taxpayer handouts to fund their gambling habits, with pre-paid cards loaded with £50 a week being used by over 6,500 migrants in the past year in gambling venues such as bookmakers, amusement arcades and casinos, Home Office data show. The Mail has the story.
In the last year, up to 6,537 asylum seekers have used the government-issued cards at least once for gambling.
The shock figures were released under freedom of information laws to the PoliticsHome website.
They triggered calls for an immediate clampdown to prevent the abuse of taxpayers’ money by asylum seekers, including many who entered the country illegally.
Last night, the Home Office confirmed it had launched an inquiry into the scandal.
It came as Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp described the “shocking” figures as “an insult to taxpayers”.
“These people have illegally entered this country without needing to – France is safe and no one needs to flee from there,” he said.
“The British taxpayer has put them up in hotels and now they slap us in the face by using the money they are given to fund gambling. These illegal immigrants clearly don’t need the money they are given if they are squandering it at casinos and arcades.
“Labour has lost control of our borders with record numbers for illegal immigrants crossing the Channel this year. The number in asylum hotels has gone up since the election and now we learn of this insult to British taxpayers.
“Everyone illegally crossing the Channel should be immediately removed to their country of origin or a safe third country in order to deter these crossings.”
So-called Aspen cards are issued to asylum seekers while they wait to have their claims dealt with – a process that can take months, or even years. Those in self-catered accommodation receive £49.18 on the card each week to pay for “clothes and footwear, non-prescription medicines, travel, food, non-alcoholic drinks, toiletries, laundry, toilet paper and communications”.
The cards are currently issued to around 80,000 individuals who are waiting for a decision on whether they have a valid claim to stay in the UK. Many are living in hotels at the taxpayers’ expense.

£49.18 a week is far more than a lot of working people will have left after pay housing costs, energy bills and buying food. Giving this amount to illegal immigrants is one more slap in the face for British people.
When asked for comment, Bright Spark MP revealed that he is unsure how the Aspen card could have been used at bookmakers and casinos.
“The UK’s world-beating Aspen system explicitly prohibits expenditure at such establishments and we are working with the service provider to get to the bottom of how this is happening. When we figure it out we promise that lessons will be learned.”
Got to love how our politicians want everything to be ‘world beating’, when the rest of us would be happy with something that ‘just works’. In this case clearly some merchants who are happy to redefine their payment types to funnel funds

Reminds me of a video doing the rounds made by some American woman sat in her car complaining that her social security benefit card (or something of that ilk) was no longer accepted by her hair and nail salon. She was apoplectic about the fact that she had to pay $100 of her own cash to fund her vanity regime, and how outrageous that was. She was furious that she was now short on her rent money, and how unfair it all was…

The Government justifies this money so that asylum seekers can buy food, clothing and other essentials.
But if they’re in a hotel getting “free” food; free clothing; and “free” everything else, they don’t need it.
So just withdraw the cards and the money from all of them who are accommodated in a hotel.
