Miliband Poised to Scrap 600,000-a-Year Heat Pump Target
Ed Miliband is poised to scrap the 600,000-a-year target for heat pumps amid budget cuts that threaten his Net Zero ambitions, according to industry sources. The Telegraph has the story.
The previous government declared that from 2028, 600,000 heat pumps would be installed every year in British homes as part of the drive towards Net Zero.
But official communications regarding the deadline have been dropped since Labour took power last year, and any mention of installation targets was absent from the party’s 2024 manifesto.
Labour has refused to recommit to the 2028 deadline, which was set by Boris Johnson’s government in 2021. The Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, is expected to announce the changes in her spending review on June 11th.
It comes after the Telegraph revealed last week that cuts to the Department for Energy and Net Zero (DESNZ) budget could force Mr Miliband to reduce funding for his flagship Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which provides up to £7,500 to homeowners looking to install a ground or air source heat pump.
Funding for the scheme is expected to expire in 2028, and the Government is yet to confirm whether it will be renewed.
“The conversations I have been involved in suggest they’re planning to get rid of the 2028 deadline, and it’s not in any of their PR,” one source told the Telegraph. “Because the budget is limited and this Government isn’t the best with finances, the Warm Homes Plan will also get shrunk.”
The Energy Department, led by Mr Miliband, is said to be bracing for budget cuts as Ms Reeves frantically tries to fill an estimated £30 billion black hole in Britain’s finances.

The engine that couldn’t.
Good old EmptyEd.
But, but, isn’t the world doomed if 600,000 UK gas boilers are not replaced with heat pumps each year? Won’t somebody think of the children!
Just think of the amount of energy required to mine, refine & produce the raw materials, then to manufacture and install 600,000 warmish pumps per year themselves. Would likely use far more than they wouldn’t save.
Funny——Y0ur correct, the eco blackmail always tries the guilt trip about “the children and children’s children”—-What a total shower of UN lackey parasites the climate socialists are.
Never mind. Ed will simply repeal the Second Law of Thermodynamics and Save The Planet. /s
What he will do is heap huge costs onto gas bills so we beg for heat pumps
Is there, somewhere, a warehouse with half a million heat pumps in it that will never be sold? If so, who made/supplied them, and will they ever get paid? There’s scope for a real financial disaster here for somebody.
It’s OK, the taxpayer already bought them.
Is the £30 billion black hole in addition to the original £22 billion black hole? Crikey we’re producing black holes faster than the B of E prints pound notes.
Explains reports of a significant tax on gas bills. Just jack up that rate to make heat pumps look attractive if not better.
Why would anyone sane ever have set a a target for:
‘Less effective than existing boiler-space warming-slightly devices’?
Another lesson in:
“you can prevent people from buying what THEY want, but you can’t make them buy what YOU want” when when you are offering is inferior, vastly more expensive and inconvenient in pretty much every way.”
Rather like the EV’s they’ve been attempting, unsuccessfully, to force on ordinary people buying and running their own vehicles (as opposed to business fleets).
The impossibility called Net Zero will eventually collapse, but not before the eco socialist twerps have stolen huge chunks of our hard earned cash to spend on this UN inspired FRAUD that pretends to be all about the climate, but has mostly nothing to with that at all.
