Lucy Powell knew that the BBC audience would be on her side because they are selected from a pool which means that is always true on all editions. She knew the Chairman was on her side and most of the media would either support her or ignore it.

So her attempt to change the subject was justa short term way of her avoiding a discussion.

We cannot ignore the fact that the Conservative government failed to launch a national enquiry for many years.

Good interview with Andrew Doyle but there is a fundamental issue that needs to be addressed, everything was discussed as though the rape gangs are all in the past, they’re not.

As Mark Steyn recently discussed with Alison Pearson and two of the most articulate victims say, it is still going on and the authorities are still looking the other way.

Mr Doyle proposes that all that need have been done was to ‘apply the law’ in the ‘grooming’ gangs scandal. But is it any longer that simple? In ‘applying the law’, Mr Doyle refers to the ideal of the political subject, the citizen, who is conceived as a rational actor. This capacity makes him the foundation of liberal society and a meritocracy. It is why he can sign contracts, vote, consent to be governed – and be held accountable for his actions in a court of law. On account of the use of this masculine universal – ‘he’, ‘him’ – some feminists have argued that the question of women as the subject of feminism raises the possibility that there may not be a subject who stands ‘before’ the law, awaiting representation ‘by’ the law. Additionally, the signifiers of the Left are 1) an ideological commitment to the State; 2) that the power of the State should be extended to the point of where the perceived needs of all in society can be maximally satisfied; 3) the use of the alphabet of defined groups – women, youth, ethnic – and their mobilisation in a cause; there is no private individual: freedom… Read more »

I was surprised and disappointed that there was no reference in the Andrew Doyle interview of one of the key reasons Labour is shying away from a national debate – the Muslim block vote. It’s clear from the last election that Labour can’t afford to upset such a big fraction of their natural vote. This, to me, is even sicker than just not wanting to disturb community cohesion.

Laurie, Andrew speaks so softly at times that it’s almost a mumble. Is there anything that can be done in the editing as I can barely follow at some points? Also the text feed on Apple Podcasts doesn’t work which would help in understanding what he says.
