The End of American Empire? – With Doug Stokes

In this Special Episode of the Sceptic, Laurie speaks to Doug Stokes, Professor of International Security and Strategy at Exeter University, Senior Advisor at the Prosperity Institute and author of books including Against Decolonisation: Campus Culture Wars and the Decline of the West.

Doug and Laurie discuss whether peace is on the cards in Ukraine, the effect of the war on Russia’s geopolitical position, whether MAGA is right to lament America’s position as global superintendent, the future of NATO and what the war means for Europe and Trump’s trade war and whether it will spell the end of dollar hegemony.

And in the premium section they discuss the long-term possibility of detente with Russia, whether the need to re-arm will mean the end of the Net Zero here in Britain and the roots of the free speech crisis in Britain’s universities.

It’s a privilege to be able to print dollars, yet the indescriminate use of that privilege is why the US is in the state it is in.

Some privilege, when they have politicians like they have had.

An interesting discussion but very much with a ‘Western’ bias. The world is being governed by a “liberal hegemonic order” (USA, of course), with geopolitics decided by military strength. Ukraine is admitted to being used by the West to “grind down” Russia, without asking why. British intelligence figures were quoted on Russian casualties but they are only one side of a highly propagandized story. Recent body exchanges were in the order of 12:1 (Ukrainian:Russian). There is certainly slow progress on the battlefield but Putin is neither interested in taking all of Ukraine nor is he interested in slaughtering fellow Slavs; furthermore, the war would have been over long ago without the interference and military and financial support of the West. Russia’s economy is surely doing relatively well, despite being on a war footing. Sanctions have only encouraged Russians to provide alternatives to Western products, resulting in business profits remaining in Russia as opposed to being sent to foreign countries. Western countries on the other hand, especially USA, are plagued both by high debt and their governments incessantly spending well in excess of their incomes. As far as military security is concerned, no country can equal (or should want to equal)… Read more »

Peace and wealth are great, until another, envious country decides it wants your stuff. Then you need a powerful effective military to prevent that. And armed friends who will come to your aid.
The real world isn’t like the economic, free markets theories would have it.

That was certainly the case in the days of the great empires (Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, French, British) but is it still true today? I fear it is only true of the current empire (USA) and its protector (or protection racket, NATO), which is why I support the idea of a multi-polar world, to provide some resistance to USA’s determination to rule the world. Whether a multi-polar world will lead to a fairer system supporting all free markets and, if so, how long, is another question but I maintain it would at least be a start. A world without conflict would be a nice place and who is causing, or supporting, all current conflicts?

He’s swallowed all the bullshine on global warming and net zero. Madness. Climate change is normal and natural. We have very little impact on it by generating a small amount of co2 (which is 0.04% of rhe atmosphere – and includes billions of tons of naturally occurring co2). We are mentally deranged.
