It’s not just Serco. About 4 years ago, I came across a properties for sale advert, offering 5 terraced houses on a street in Hartlepool. The entrepreneur who’d bought them had filled each house with asylum-seekers and then parcelled all 5 as a job lot for sale as a rock-solid investment. The advert made it clear that the rent was guaranteed by the government, as were the costs of maintenance and repairs, so it really was an incredibly attractive investment, particularly as house prices in that part of Hartlepool were pretty depressed.

What strikes me, though, is that the government is clearly applying enormous pressure to expedite the process of granting these individuals the right to remain in the UK, at which point they will not longer be asylum-seekers. Does that mean that they will no longer be eligible to stay in these houses?

Cost – £190 BILLION pa

Per taxpayer – £6,000

And that is without any of the extra associated costs. Such as benefits and crime.

Unbelievable.

Has Trump really turned on Putin? Yes, but not for the reasons that you might think….like child abduction and gratuitous ballistic missile attacks on civilian targets….. For anyone who hasn’t been paying attention, this, below, is what happens if expansionist totalitarian states come to believe that there is no international rules based order anymore: ‘China has seized a disputed reef just kilometres away from the Philippines’ most important military outpost in the South China Sea…….. The move marks the first time in many years that Beijing, which claims the South China Sea almost in its entirety, has officially planted its flag on another previously unoccupied land feature. Sandy Cay has strategic value for China because international law grants it a territorial sea. That 12-nautical-mile radius overlaps with Thitu Island, the South China Sea reef the Philippines uses to track Chinese moves in the area. The White House said the reports of China seizing Sandy Cay were “deeply concerning if true”. “Actions like these threaten regional stability and violate international law,” said James Hewitt, National Security Council spokesperson. “We are consulting closely with our own partners and remain committed to a free and open Indo-Pacific.’ https://www.ft.com/content/ae6acb23-7b09-4783-8ebb-9e88b5126361 To every action, there is a… Read more »

‘Sanctions on Russia: a bipartisan bill with additional tariffs on countries buying Russian oil, gas, and uranium is ready, says Senator Lindsey Graham. He added that the Senate is prepared to move forward and will pass it with an overwhelming majority if Russia doesn’t pursue a fair, just, and lasting peace.’

Sanctions, sanctions, sanctions. I believe the EU is on its 17th sanction package against Russia and all these sanctions has ever done is hurt the EU. “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”: not so much insanity as stupidity.

‘Brent crude is now at just $63, while Urals, Russia’s key export blend, plunged to almost $50 per barrel. This is far below what the Kremlin needs to break even, delivering a severe blow to an already fragile economy. These rock-bottom prices threaten Russia’s strapped budget and all but guarantee another devaluation of the ruble in the coming months. RBK Daily, a Russian business newspaper, said today that the decline in oil prices “poses serious problems for Russia’s GDP, the state budget and will inevitably lead to a collapse of the ruble exchange rate.”  What Putin hoped would be an opportunity for sanctions relief and economic revival is now shaping up to be a deepening crisis. But the Trump slump isn’t just an economic blow – it’s also a direct consequence of Putin’s refusal to make peace in Ukraine and his continued defiance of international norms. For years, Putin banked on a close relationship with Trump back in the White House, which could lead to sanctions relief and a quick reintegration of Russia into the global community. He gambled that Trump’s admiration for strongmen and America First approach would translate into economic opportunity for Russia. But as the oil market… Read more »

You write that China has seized a reef just kilometres away from a reef used by the Philippines’ military to observe Chinese activities.

Well, somebody was sleeping. Are we supposed to care? Is that not a problem (if it is such) to be sorted out between China and the Philippines? They could address the problem to the UN, for example.

Ah, but the White House is concerned about that reef, claiming USA is “committed to a free and open Indo-Pacific”. And because of all these reefs, and some vague connection to Crimea, we are supposed to expect an uncontrolled spread of nuclear weapons around the world?

Jeffrey Sachs’ article in the China Daily (https://www.chinadailyasia.com/hk/article/610510) clearly explains why China neither is, nor ever was, a threat to the world, whereas USA, with its military, for example, on Kinmen, an island under Taiwan administration but only one mile from the Chinese coast, has repeatedly demonstrated it certainly is.

Trump previously stated he would support a reduction in US and Russian nuclear armaments, which would be an excellent idea. It would be an even better idea to get rid of all nuclear weapons from all countries around the world.

‘China’s move to consolidate control over Sandy Cay is widely interpreted as a calculated test of Manila’s political will and Washington’s commitment under the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty, at a time when U.S. security guarantees are under intense scrutiny globally.’ ‘Ukraine now has a choice between NATO membership or manufacturing nuclear weapons…..Ukraine has nine nuclear waste sites containing 42 million tons of radioactive waste and a number of abandoned missile unit bases. Soviet Ukraine designed and produced missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads, a project spearheaded at the Pivdenmash factory……Since the US terminated the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty in 2019, Ukraine can construct missiles with a range of up to 5,500km (3,400 miles). It is already working on ballistic missile development for conventional loads…..the construction of a dirty bomb made from radioactive waste and delivered by a conventional weapons system like a combat aircraft. This is far easier and cheaper than a full-scale nuclear weapons program and is entirely plausible……. There is a real danger here that the world would be foolish to ignore. If Ukraine one day faces the choice between national survival and its eradication by advancing Russian forces, what might it choose? You don’t have to be a geopolitical expert to understand that Ukraine may… Read more »

Morning all. Business as usual, I see…

For a fist full of roubles

I heard someone on the media discussing the suggestion that Trump is often influenced by the person he most recently spoke to, so no surprise that he knocks Putin after a chat with Zelensky.

For a fist full of roubles

Is that you downticking Ian?

For a fist full of roubles

Capital gains tax receipts fall 10% as wealthy exit UK” – well what a surprise. It is a good job we have a Chancellor who is an eperienced economist.

I do like sceptics but on the News update why don’t they just headline “Buy the Telegraph”
Most of the stories are Telegraph links which cannot be read without paying for a subscription, and frankly the behaviour of the Telegraph during the Scamdemic and its still religious devotion to the Conservatives means I will not pay for a publication that printed such terrible things during the Plandemic.

Open the link in a private tab, the it the stop button on your browser as soon as the page begins to load.

But a very fair point about the number of links to the Torygraph.

Perhaps this site should pick up and act on one of its own Telegraph news items;
GB News outcasts take fight for the Right on to YouTube”
Once you venture into the tricky waters of You-Tube videos you do have to be very wary and also very patient to put up with some of the tedious verbosity of the presenters.

Whilst it is only a local issue it is an indication of our life and times that Geoff Buys Cars has had such a vehement response to his series of videos on what is going on with the Malvern Hills.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2B5nbTgVjQ

Then you have Barrie Crampton laboriously and painstakingly wading his way through the obfuscation, smoke and mirrors surrounding the Electric Car market.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQkkLphnhro

Linking to this sort of stuff would be much harder work than just going through the Telegraph contents page but it may be worth doing to see what is going on in You-Tube land.

I have passed this same criticism frequently and it makes bugger all difference. It’s a sort of Torygraph round-up and I am sure it drives traffic away.

“A female theatre director has proposed a year-long ban on plays by writers who are white and male – such as Shakespeare. The Telegraph‘s Michael Deacon wonders why this isn’t regarded as racist.”

For the billionth time Michael, you can’t be racist towards white people. It’s just not possible. And even if it was, they would probably deserve it for being so toxic and evil.
