Trump Appears to Blame Ukraine for War: “You Should Never Have Started It”
Donald Trump appears to have blamed Ukraine for Russia’s invasion of the country three years ago, telling Zelensky “You should never have started it” and dismissing his anger at being cut out of peace talks. The Mail has more.
“You should never have started it,” the US President said of Kyiv as he took aim at the Ukrainian President for raising concerns that his country had not been at the table in talks between Washington and Moscow on Tuesday.
“I think I have the power to end this war, and I think it’s going very well. But today, I heard, ‘Oh, well, we weren’t invited.’ Well, you’ve been there for three years.
“You should have ended it. You should have never started it. You could have made a deal. I could have made a deal for Ukraine,” Trump told a news conference.
After the meeting between US and Russian officials in Riyadh on Tuesday, Trump said he was “much more confident” that a peace deal could be struck.
“They were very good,” he said. “Russia wants to do something. They want to stop the savage barbarianism.”
The stunning claim came as Vladimir Putin’s forces launched a blistering aerial attack on the Ukrainian city of Odesa overnight, striking a children’s clinic and kindergarten and leaving much of the city without power.
As fears mount that Washington could force Kyiv into an agreement it doesn’t want, Zelensky said yesterday that he will never accept a deal made without Ukraine’s input, and hit out at the US and Russia for holding talks “behind our backs”.
But Trump responded furiously to his comments, further attacking Zelensky at last night’s press conference in Mar-a-Lago by saying it had been “too long” since Ukraine had held elections for him to have a seat at the table.
Trump insisted this point was “not a demand from Russia”, but “something that comes from me and from many other countries”.
However the claim is straight out of Moscow’s playbook – and failed to mention that Russia’s recent election in 2024 was rigged, with Putin’s foes killed, jailed or exiled, with votes distorted and the media muzzled to give him a landslide victory.
Trump went on to falsely claim that Zelensky is only supported by 4% of Ukrainians. [He said: “He’s down at 4% approval rating.”]
When asked about European countries potentially sending troops to Ukraine, Trump said yesterday: “If they want to do that, that’s great, I’m all for it… I mean, I know France has mentioned it, others have mentioned it, the UK has mentioned it.”
However, he added: “We won’t have to put any over there because, you know, we’re very far away.”
Sir Keir Starmer called for the US to provide a “backstop” for any deal in Ukraine, saying that a security guarantee from Washington would be “the only way to effectively deter Russia” from rebuilding its forces and launching another attack.
As US special representative Keith Kellogg arrived in Kyiv, Zelensky slammed Trump’s team in Saudi Arabia, saying they had been blinded by Putin’s “pathological liars”.
Referring to the overnight onslaught on Odesa, the Ukrainian leader said: “Just yesterday, after the infamous meeting in Riyadh, it became known that Russian representatives had once again lied about not allegedly striking the energy sector.
“Almost at the same time, there was another strike, strike drones against electrical transformers.
“And this was in winter, when it was minus six degrees Celsius at night. At least 160,000 Odessans are now without heat and electricity.
“Thirteen schools, a kindergarten, and several hospitals are left without heating and electricity.
“Repair crews are working, all utilities are involved. I am grateful to every rescuer, everyone who helps people.
“We must remember that Russia is ruled by pathological liars, and they cannot be trusted – they must be pressured for the sake of peace.”
Worth reading in full.
Zelensky this morning replied that Trump is “living in a disinformation space” created by Moscow and said: “I can’t sell our state”:
Volodymyr Zelensky has blasted the United States for “helping” Vladimir Putin “to come out of isolation”, warning that Donald Trump “is living in a disinformation space” created by Moscow.
The Ukrainian President declared that his country is not for sale, disputing Trump’s claims that the US has given Ukraine $500billion and calling the suggestion that Kyiv pay this back with a mineral exploration deal “not a serious conversation”.
“Look, we all want a victory, and we want Trump to win, and we want Ukraine to win, all of us to succeed,” he said. “But there is nothing clear here… I am protecting Ukraine. I can’t sell it away. I can’t sell our state.”

The US laid the foundations to this war by pumping billions of dollars into Ukraine from 1991 onwards poisoning Ukraine against Russia.
It culminated in the US led coup of 2014.
The US is as much to blame as Ukraine for using them as a proxy.
I have listed all the reasons for Russia’s SMO and why it was “justified” on this blog.

Nothing, but nothing, justifies hundreds of thousands of deaths, millions displaced, the torture and killing of prisoners of war, the kidnapping of children, the assassination of journalists, political opponents, the killing of a British citizen on British soil using enough Novichok to kill thousands……
Nothing.
Very true. Why is Ukraine doing it? The Novichok incident is an allegation and is not proven.
Enough Novichok to kill thousands, but almost everyone who “allegedly” came into contact with one of the most deadly nerve agents known to man, survived.
Tragic for the person who died of course, no question about that, but who is actually to blame? Do we trust the British MSM and BBC on this issue?
This is just speculation of course, but close to there we have our own Bio Lab with a questionable history — Porton Down.
And did they die from Novichok poisoning?
No
Porton down novichuk. Allegation? Okay sure, whatever.
If you believe the official story of the so-called Skripal poisonings you are even more gullible than I thought.
It was so obviously a false flag event by UK security services to blame it on the two Russian agents who were monitoring the Skripals.
Porton Down is just down the road.
The first respondent was the head nurse of the British army.
All designed to stop Germany using Nord Stream II before the US eventually blew it up.

Dresden, Cologne, Hamburg, Berlin… circa 1944/5.
I’m not old enough to remember Dresden, but I know what the Allies did there, Monro. Just one of many examples.
They. Are. All. Guilty. All those who seek to divide us and profit from that division.
Is that the Novichok that you could wipe away using baby wipes according to the then Chief Medical Officer? 😉
Seems to me as if the establishment may be triggered by simple facts.
The US and Russia can have as many talks as they like.
The Ukraine doesn’t have to accept anything the US and Russia agree. They can fight on if they like. They can reach a peace settlement with Russia if they like. With their own leverage of course.
European countries can do what they want. They can send troops. They can try to have peace talks with Russia. With their own leverage of course.
The problem the European establishment has is that for decades it has carried itself around the world using the US’s military leverage and backing.
That is now over. Europe, the Ukraine have been put on notice that they can no longer act as if the US’s power and leverage is theirs.
And of course, that offends them. And in some cases it makes them cry.
Trump has pretty much spelled out to them that NATO article 5 will not apply, at least in the case of US.
Can see a point where he will take US out of NATO if EU/UK try to continue supporting and even fighting for Ukraine under the NATO name.
Zelensky calling for a “European Army” is something not new…..In a debate between Farage and Nick Clegg, Farage warned about plans for a EU army, Clegg dismissed that allegation as conspiracy theory. I remember reading about this long before Farage mentioned that in the debate that was around 2010. Farage won that debate according to most people at the time.
Yes you are correct. The former German chancellor Merkel said “we ought to work on the vision of one day establishing a proper European army” in her address to the European Parliament in November 2018.
That is the trouble with being a proxy for the US, and as we have seen, a change in the administration can mean a change in the rules.
Are European countries proxies for the US or has the old European establishment been controlling and manipulating the US for its own purposes since WWII?
It seems to me that if the US had been “using” Europe then Europeans would be happy to be free of the American yoke.
But it seems very much the opposite. Europe is terrified of being left to its own devices. And the reaction so far is to act disgusted and superior, using the same admonishing tone that Europe has always had towards the US when it didn’t seem to be doing things the way it likes.
I’m not sure about that, maybe to some degree in the City of London, that seems to be a state within a state. Remember the Suez Canal, that was the post WW2 moment that the US put the UK on notice that the Empire is over and the US has the global hegemony now.
Well, one way or another we are about to find out exactly how much power European countries have without the blank cheque backing of the US.
Ukraine can’t fight on without manpower, money, munitions and military equipment. All of which in short-supply and the last two dependent on the generosity of the US and European Countries – such generosity about exhausted.
Russia on the other hand has oodles of these things.
Sounds great. For a start, I suggest no more German money for US foreign policy goals, ever, and getting rid of the parts of the so-called 2 + 4 treaty which limits the German military to substantially less than 400,000 soldiers.
To use that Alice Weidel quote again: Even for our so-called allies, we [Germany] are nothing but a cash machine and an arms supplier.
Trump may control the US government ATM. But his US political opponents still control the European empire they built for themselves in the 1940s/ 50s and this shadow boxing is just ridiculous. Germany is not a sovereign state. No US president is ever voluntarily going to change that. Hence, people claiming to articulate the Trump position are either disingenuously using the European stooges of his US political opponents as punching balls because they don’t dare to take on the puppet masters themselves. Or they’re so terminally clueless and stupid that it really doesn’t matter what they believe to up to.
If things are as you say, then Germany should be delighted to be released from US control. They should be rejoicing at the good times ahead. Free to defend itself, free to make agreements with whoever it wants.
That things are as I say is something you can easily verify yourself. Google is your friend and the trick to claim to dispute something that’s obviously true for want of a counterargument isn’t particularly good.
Why do you believe the people administrating Germany on behalf of the US democrats should be delighted to lose the backing of the people who guarantee them their government positions and the whole government to begin with? I would be delighted if some German government would just tear the 2 + 4 treaty to bits, declare that we categorically don’t accept Polish occuptation of Breslau and Swinemünde and chance our so-called allies to do the military invasion which is still an offical exception to the prohibition of a war of aggression in the UN treaties. But that’s something not even the AfD would do and the united planet savers from CDU/CSU, SPD, Greens and FDP would probably turn to stone in shock at the mere thought of something like this.
Actually, they can fight on if they can ……… ‘like’ does not come into it, and good luck to them.
Ukraine are the 4th most corrupt nation on earth and they’ll eat whatever crumbs they’re offered.
Gave plenty of scope for Hunter Biden to get his nose in the trough for sure.
he’s not entirely wrong. If Ukraine hadn’t behaved like a whore, then this wouldn’t have happened. But they took the money and over threw Janovich facilitated Biden‘s crack addled son allowed BioLabs to be built across a territory allowed Zielinski who is basically a CIA stooge to be put in power and allowed NATO to train up their troops. I wouldn’t have done anything different if I was Russia.
Like many pimps, he is rich and has many properties over the World including a nice one in Italy. Would be interesting to know how he became so rich in such a basket case of a country. Don’t get me wrong, Ukraine has some nice architecture, at least in places that have survived the bombs, drones etc.
President Trump’s boldness has resulted in dialogue.
The British Government’s equally controversial dialogue with the IRA resulted in peace in Northern Ireland.
You never know….
An election in Ukraine in the context of these bilateral negotiations, Ukraine excluded, could work very well electorally for the Ukrainian President, a good result from Russia’s stupidity.
But Russia is also stubborn, will not negotiate in good faith. The Chinese have worked that out and, no doubt, Iran and North Korea are on the same voyage of discovery.
The best that can be hoped for is a pregnant pause. A pause for the four years of President Trump’s administration would suit Putin well.
Vice President Vance looks like a credible successor who will hold Putin to any agreement, with no backsliding. So the Vice President’s security detail should guard the VP’s underpants very closely.
But my guess is that these negotiations will simply scope out positions that are quite simply too far apart.
Perhaps, and say what you like about the Orange Oracle, but he does get results…
I am puzzled how they can “hold Russia to account” when they have been trying, and abjectly failing, to do that for the last 3 years. I don’t think anyone thinks that Ukraine is worth a nuclear holocaust for.
Zelensky needs to realise that he has reached the end of the road. If he doesn’t stop throwing insignificant tantrums and learn to do as he is told he will be in dead man’s shoes and literally.
” “living in a disinformation space” created by Moscow and said: “I can’t sell our state”:
I seem to remember you pimping it out to the likes of Blackrock, JP Morgan etc. They are not countries but corporations, but fit the definition of state fascism.
I wonder what Boris makes of all this….The man with blood on his hands. There was a fitness expert on Jeremy Vine saying how he hates Boris for ‘lying to the Queen’….Of all the things that is why he dislikes him, for the largest democratic vote in British history that the establishment made sure they would never permit ever again. I suppose the violation of the Nuremberg Code is small fry to him. I liked him when he was just talking about fitness.
Mark Steyn with his style of humour…
“The opposition to Musk and DOGE is accelerating into an outright defence by Democrats, bureaucrats, judges and the media of their bloated corruption and graft. Three observations:
It’s a racket, that’s all. Those on the inside are enriching themselves not only at your expense – they blew through that years ago – but at your unborn great-grandchildren’s expense.
And everyone from the Deep State to CBS News is committed to keeping it that way.”
Responding to Starmer’s plan to send British “peacekeeping” troops to Ukraine, one commenter said,
“Great idea, now where are the troops coming from? Do they have a ‘troops’ money tree’? We can’t even defend ourselves, let alone Ukraine. The man is a top candidate for Plank of the Year.”
Given that Trumpy regards himself the “Master of the Deal”, I was taken aback by his willingness to concede so much to Putin, who is nothing but a kleptomaniac and a thug on a grand scale. Ukraine is not Trump’s to give away and he seems to have bent over backwards to be nice to Putin and be vicious towards Zelensky, who was, after all, invaded. So why concede so much, so quickly in a peace deal, that sees Ukraine reduced to a vassal state?
It just doesn’t seem to fit in with Trump’s persona.
On a visit to Moscow, many years ago, it was alleged that Trump hired a hooker to take part in, let’s say, some imaginative shower activities. As a prominent businessman, the Russians would have bugged or even videod Trump’s hotel room.
Putin has the video.
I very much doubt it. In the days of AI, a heavily pixelated and/ or blurry video hardly counts as proof.
I think Trump is threatening to throw Zelenski in at the deep end to obtain concessions from Europe. He is testing whether their interest in hurting Trump is greater than their interest in hurting Putin.
Offering to give Putin about 20% of Ukrainian territory is hardly giving Putin whatever he wants, seeing the original aim of Putin was to take the entire Ukraine.
backed with documentation, it would certainly be suggestive.
Trump is actually giving a guarantee that NATO and the USA will stand aside while Putin rolls into Kiiv, or at least instals a puppet.
Nothing that Trump promises can count as a guarantee as whoever succeeds him will probably have other ideas.
“Ukraine is not Trump’s to give away”? I think you’ll find it is. The US bought it a few years ago. Zelenskyy trousered the money.
Alan Hart writing for GB News really put the UK troops question into perspective, when he pointed out that:
“In the last two years, 77,000 migrants entered Britain illegally via the Channel [mostly hostile alien men of military age]. That’s 3000 more people than are in the entire British Army.”
“Britain’s Army is projected to fall below 70,000 members this year, the smallest since the Napoleonic era, meaning the entire British Army could fit into Wembley with 20,000 seats to spare.”
[Since the Russian Army has 1,200,000 troops, Starmer’s suggestion is rather like a British Robin squaring up to a Russian Bear.]
https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/starmer-s-plan-for-british-troops-to-police-ukraine-border-slammed-let-s-control-our-own-borders-first/ar-AA1znByv?ocid=msedgdhp&pc=U531&cvid=4ca1e661802247dda334b334f35045cf&ei=44
This could be scaled up very quickly, within about a year, as already done in the past, if money was to be made available for it. 1,200,200 isn’t a large army. That’s less than the strength of the regular Germany army in 1914¹ and only about a fourth of it at the beginning of 1918.
¹ It’s actually less than the cold war German army on planned war footing or the planned war strength of the Greek army today.
There are no innocents in this disastrous war except the ordinary Ukrainians and those foot soldiers conscripted to be slaughtered. There was no need at all for this bloody conflict.
They needed a reason for their massive money-laundering schemes. Deaths of innocents is of no consequence to the money-worshipping monsters.
But then Trump appears to be the kind of man who would blame the woman for being sexually assaulted. “Your country and all its bounty was too inviting”. Completely ignoring the nuclear disarmament treaty that Russia and America signed to respect Ukraine’s border
Looks like the fall of one Russian wall dividing a Nation – Germany East and West – was celebrated by America but a new one is being cheered.
This is a hilarious take. Shortly after the US installed a TV Comedian as its client “President” in Ukraine, Washington think tank RAND Corporation published ‘Overextending and Unbalancing Russia: Assessing the Impact of Cost-Imposing Options’ (24 April 2019. https://doi.org/10.7249/RB10014) These options included: intensifying Ukraine’s border dispute with Russia and giving it lethal armaments; reposturing NATO fighters, bombers, troops, and tactical and nuclear weapons along the NATO/Russian border; and interfering (via the CIA and USAID) in Russia’s democratic processes to promote the overthrow of the Russian government.
Russia invaded Ukraine after seeking assurances that NATO (i.e. the US) would not implement this doctrine, and NATO’s (i.e,. the US’s) refusal to offer such reassurance.
Zelensky that drug addled (provably) MI6 asset.
Can Zel Boy explain his finances and property portfolio?. Zel Boy could’ve sold choco chip ice cream to Resident Biden for $200b. President Trump had him sussed in 10 minutes
Aah yes Ukraine, one of the most corrupt countrys in the world, aided and abetted by Nato, EU, UK , and no Zelensky doesnt want the “war” to stop, making far too much money out of it, all included in the WEF’s plan.
Biden and the Filth may have led the charge with the cash for the meatgrinder, but could not have started without the driving by the Nazis of Ukraine. Trump is quite right – they have had three years to settle the conflict but have doubled down at every opportunity,
Fascinating, the only take away from President Trump’s speech yesterday in Miami, Fl is he said zelensky “started the war”. No mention today on any msm outlet that nearly 2 million adult men have lost their lives, that ukraine has been decimated, that the ukraine and Europe have had four yrs to sit around the table with Russia to discuss peace. Nope, none of that nonsense. Just the one liner president trump made about the ukraine being the one who started the proxy war. The msm speak. reminds me of something they did about four yrs ago. Something to do with “safe and effective”. Fascinating. Can we see where this is headed. Trump bad guy, zelensky angel. Buckle up folks, President trump has had enough of the ukraine and europe BS. He simply won’t tolerate it. Thank goodness💕
Zelenski is a dictator. What else do you call someone who can force 30,000 soldiers through the Russian’s dragon teeth defences, to their predictable deaths, just so he can have ‘spring offensive’ optics and keep NATO happy for their summit?
