Muhammad Most Popular Baby Name for Boys for the First Time
Muhammad has become the most popular baby name for boys for the first time, new data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) have revealed. The Telegraph has more.
The name has overtaken Noah, which came in second. Oliver was third in the 2023 rankings.
Olivia remained the most popular name for baby girls for the eighth year in a row, with Amelia and Isla the second and third most popular for girls.
Each year, the ONS analyses the latest baby name data, revealing the most popular – and unpopular – names in the U.K..
In 2023 there were 4,661 Muhammads born across England and Wales, up from 4,177 in 2022.
In contrast, only 4,382 Noahs were born in 2023, down from 4,586 the previous year.
In previous years, combining all the different spellings of Muhammad would have made it the top name, but this is the first year that just one spelling of the name has topped the list.
This year, the next most common variant of the Arabic name – Mohammed – is also in the top 50, coming in at the 28th most popular name in 2023, down from 27th place the year before.
An analysis by the Telegraph found that two of the fastest-growing boys’ names in 2023 were Arabic in origin: Ayman, up 47%, and Hasan, up 43%. Among girls, Arabic names also saw significant growth, with Aizal and its variant Ayzal rising 479% and 183%, respectively. Inaya, meaning “care” or “protection” in Arabic, increased by 48%.
The result is not so surprising given that in 2023 around a third (31.8%) of births in England and Wales were to non-U.K.-born mothers.

I’m really not sure what can be learned from this statistic. Amongst Muslim families, Muhammad is and always has been by far the most popular choice of boy’s name. Outside of the Muslim sector of society, there has always been a much broader choice of names. Even the article says this.
Muslims in the UK just decided to agree on the Roman spelling of the name, that’s all.
And non-Muslims are having fewer children.
From my own anecdotal experience living near Bradford for most of the scamdemic, scepticism of the lockdowns, jabs etc was far higher in Muslim society, too. So perhaps their birthrate has remained constant, while “ours” has plummeted for all sorts of reasons.

I’m not sure this is right, i think it’s been # 1 for years. In the past they’ve counted the different spellings of Muhammad as separate names, so Mohammad was split out from Muhammad or Mohammed, this year, either everyone’s settled on a common spelling or it’s been aggregated.

I knew this storywould turn up here. Basically, the reason ‘Mohammad’ is the most popular name is that (as my son informed me) a lot of Muslim boys have ‘Mohammad’ as their official first name, but the name they’re known by is the name that follows that, ie there’s a second ‘first name’. So it doesn’t mean that there are more Muslims than any other group – it means the Muslims are all (or many/most) choosing ‘Mohammad’ as the official first name. To try to make myself clearer, if all the ‘white’ boys were ‘Jesus Tom’, ‘Jesus Ethan’, ‘Jesus Sam’, but known as Tom, Ethan and Sam, ‘Jesus’ would be the most popular name in the UK. So it’s simply that a significant proportion of the population are giving the same ‘first name’ to their children. Hope that makes sense!

And you can rest assured that few, if any, of those parents were Aussies, or Yanks, or Kiwis, or Canadians, or Scandinavians, or Ethnic Europeans from any tribe.

I get the Mohammed thing but I strongly doubt that Noah is the next most popular name. I would like to think it suggested awareness of the coming cataclysm but I doubt it. I have never in all my life met an Englishman called Noah. Not Leo, Luca or Oscar. Surely this is a piss take. I met a few 90 year olds with names like Arthur. I don’t know maybe they are trying to release Merlin from his imprisonment in a tree. Henry give me a break no pleeb has named his son Henry for decades.
