1,750,000 Sign Petition Calling for General Election in Britain As Labour Party Support Fades
A petition demanding a new general election to oust the Left-wing Labour Government has exploded, racking up over 1,750,000 signatures in under a week. Breitbart has more.
The petition states that the “current Labour Government have gone back on the promises they laid out in the lead up to the last election”, and therefore, the petition called for an election to be called.
While Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour Party swept to power in July with a 174 majority with 411 seats in the parliament — the best performance for the party since Tony Blair in 1997 — the party only won just over a third of voters.
Since coming to power, Prime Minsiter Starmer has seen his approval continually decline, pushing forward broadly unpopular leftist policies, such as cutting fuel aid subsidies to pensioners and seeking to expand the death tax to include family farms.
A survey this week from Ipsos found that just 23% of the public have a favourable opinion of Starmer, compared to 52% who hold a negative view of the Prime Minister. …
Reform U.K. MPs were quick to seize on the petition calling for a new election, with Farage’s deputy, Richard Tice, saying: “Let’s make this the biggest petition ever in the U.K. – sign, share and spread the word.” …
In Britain, any official petition with over 100,000 signatures must be considered for a debate in Parliament, and the government is mandated to issue a response to any petition with more than 10,000 signatures.

There’s some experts reliably informing us on Twitter that this can’t possibly be bots, which some cynics have suggested. Their explanations are a bit above my pay grade but they seem confident this is real people voting. Plus the fact you need to confirm via your email before your signature is added, so this would prove too difficult to deploy bots, apparently.
I wonder if it’ll get to 2 million by this time tomorrow. I’m not sure when the thing started.🤔

Yes I read posts on Twitter querying bots too so you’re not alone. But indeed, the consensus seems to be negative for a bot attack🤖🤖. Of course, we all know this petition won’t lead to anything meaningful changing, but surely a super high number of signatures will ram the message home to Labour just how despised they are, if nothing else. That has to count for something.🤞

The people who designed this system believe it does. That’s not an unreasonable assumption because each instance of a bot trying to sign the petition would use up a different email address. For practical purposes, this would at least require collaboration by a large email provider, ie, while such an attack is theoretically feasible, only a rogue ISP could pull it off and only one without commercial interest in his own business as that would come to an inevitable end once the issue became known which it inevitably would.

Absolutely spot on! The Swiss People have been leading the way in this for a long time, showing the world how democracy is supposed to function.
They also led the way in organizing citizen militias of every Swiss man, requiring them all to keep a gun and ammunition locked away in their homes, and training the women as support workers in any emergency. Emergency shelters, food and medical supplies were kept ready in cave systems in the mountains, if I remember correctly (reading about it years ago), and even the children knew exactly where to muster and go to the mountain shelters.

You’re right: it won’t have any practical effect. A petition like this won’t result in a general election. The only formal way we have in this country of showing our disapproval of any government is the way we vote at the next general election. After all, it’s not like this is the first party that’s promised one thing before being elected and delivered another once it’s in power.
Having said that, the petition does provide a platform for people to show the government how unpopular its policies are proving. Who knows, it may even receive some attention from the broadcast media, and add into a narrative of general discontent. It also helps the disgruntled voters feel they’re not alone, so there’s a benefit in terms of morale.

I watched the petition for about 10 minutes and it went up by 60,000 signatures. It now stands at over 1,266,000 signatures.
Iam afraid these petitions are just another construct to dupe you into believing that you live in a “democracy”, and that theres an avenue for your concern and complaints…
Absolutely nothing to get excited about, this will change nothing, look at history… only one thing that will make a change… Pitchforks.
A somewhat cynical view, but I would, on balance, probably agree with you. The response from the Labour Party will be that the electorate provided them with a mandate (even though they have arguably deviated significantly from their manifesto pledges), and that democracy has therefore been observed.
This petition (to which I am also a signatory), will make a media story or two, but I think pinning our hopes on it actually achieving its objective would be wishful thinking. It will be denounced as a work of the “far right”, as is everything inconvenient for our current “government”.
If it makes 2TK and his gang of incompetents slightly more uncomfortable, I think that is all we could realistically expect.

I’d see it differently: the petition system was set up to give a pretend voice to the people, and the people have exploited it to create a strong political statement.

This won’t directly stop Starmer and his bunch of amateurs, but it contributes to the overall picture of how reviled he is, and how it seems most people think he and his government are see you next tuesdays.
The shame is that we didn’t get a proper recall act years ago, because then we could have built on this to get a recall petition in every Labour constituency because of the way they all stood on a manifesto that was obviously a complete crock of s**t and have consistently voted for things that were not in the manifesto or which we were promised would never happen before the election.
