Landlords and Savers Slam Starmer After he Suggests They Don’t Count as “Working People” and Will be Hit With Tax Hikes

Landlords in Britain have hit back at Keir Starmer, branding him “insulting” and “out of touch”, after he suggested they do not count as “working people” and hence are fair game for tax hikes ahead of the Budget. The Mail has more.

The Government has been asked repeatedly to define the term “working people” in a bid to establish which taxes Chancellor Rachel Reeves could hike next Wednesday.

Now, the Prime Minister suggested those with assets are not “working people” and it is expected they will be targeted by the biggest tax hikes in three decades.

He has already ruled out putting up income tax, employee National Insurance and VAT, leaving Ms. Reeves to target areas such as capital gains and inheritance tax.

Speaking at the Commonwealth summit in Samoa, Sir Keir said a “working person” is somebody who “goes out and earns their living, usually paid in a sort of monthly cheque” but they did not have the ability to “write a cheque to get out of difficulties”.

And when asked if this would include people who get all or part of their income from assets, he told Sky News: “Well, they wouldn’t come within my definition.”

Although Downing Street then tried to clarify that people with small savings did count as working people, the comments have caused fury among landlords.

Among them is Patricia McGirr, of Rossendale, Lancashire, who has been a landlord and small business owner for more than 20 years and said she had “worked long and very hard week in and week out”.

The 59-year-old, who runs the Repossession Rescue Network, told MailOnline: “I worked for the NHS for 14 years and began to invest to safeguard my family.

“The Prime Minister and his Cabinet are out of touch to think small business owners and landlords don’t actually work for their money. Their policies are pushing everyone to the brink when they rely on the private rental sector for much needed capacity.”

Work. Noun and verb. “The application of mental or physical effort to a purpose”. First definition in the Oxford English Reference Dictionary followed by many others. Sir Keir should tell us exactly what his version is.

I don’t count politicians as working people, they are bloodsucking parasites! What work do they actually do?

Maybe Labour should change their name to The Islington Party!

I don’t know why anyone takes his utterances seriously. The man is obvioously a cretin and it isn’t as if he makes up for it with social skills. He is the sort that loves to get people frothing at the mouth if they stand in the way of the agenda. That’s what strikes me most about him and so therefore it is best to treat his remarks with the contempt they deserve. I would ask, can anyone point to a single wise or perspicacious or even intelligent thing that he has ever said. Clumsy inept management of stock phrases with a face like a slapped arse. A malevolent and demon possessed tailor’s dummy.

You are right but stupid as he is, the demons that control him are not quite so stupid.

Can anyone recall an opinion he has maintained for longer than 24 hours?

For a fist full of roubles

So Labour want to support people who spend their money like water and don’t have any reserves to call upon when things get a bit difficult.
Rather like Labour themselves.

It’s a bizarre attitude, that no matter how much toil and graft and how many hours you’ve put in to accumulate some savings, that immediately means you aren’t “working” any more. What’s the threshold I wonder? How much are you allowed to have saved before you no longer have “small savings” and you’re not allowed to say you work any more?

Would love to know how much Starmer himself has in the bank. Does he count himself as a working person I wonder?

Interesting that the DS moderator is not allowing me to comment on this article at all.

Kulaks and plebs. These are the classes Labour recognise.

I don’t know about anyone else but the more I hear of 2TKfreegear utterances the more angry and depressed I become.

To say that he is totally useless is being very kind.

I consider him and his acolytes to be very dangerous and I feel he is putting the UK on a collision course to total destruction.

He prefers Davos and is dancing their tune – all the while pulling his puppet strings.

Anyone remember the awkward puppet versions of Stingray and Thunderbirds when you could see the strings of the puppets?

Now look at Starmfuhrer and it is so easy to imagine the strings are really there making his head move and nod and his arms and legs and body mover.

In retirement (aged 71) I have no other income than from 3 small properties, fixed interest rainy day savings and my OAP. But, I’m not a working man now, despite never being unemployed and paying all my taxes all of my life.

Love the way even the landlady at the end has to shoehorn in the part about working for the sainted NHS for 14 years, because presumably that makes her a better sort of asset-owning “working person” just like Starmer’s toolmaking heritage presumably makes him working class no matter how rich and powerful he has become.
