Yvette Cooper Accused of Prejudicing Trials of Riot Suspects by Describing Them as “Criminals”

Yvette Cooper has been accused by the Free Speech Union of suggesting everyone arrested in connection with the recent disorder is guilty. The Telegraph has more.

In a letter to Ms. Cooper, the Free Speech Union raised concerns that the post on X, formerly known as Twitter, risked prejudicing the trials of those yet to appear in court.

The message was posted by the official Home Office account on Aug 14 after two weeks of unrest in British towns and cities.

It contained a graphic saying there had been more than 1,000 arrests underneath the caption: “These criminals will face the full force of the law.”

Toby Young, the general secretary of the Free Speech Union, warned the tweet risked breaching the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.

In the letter he said Ms. Cooper was “ultimately responsible” for the content of the Home Office’s account and should order the deletion of the post.

He wrote: “We are concerned that this post referred to all the people who have been arrested in connection with the recent public disorder as ‘criminals’, including those who have not been charged, or who have been charged but have pleaded not guilty and have not yet been tried.

“For example, one of our members, the 55-year-old woman who was arrested last week for wrongly identifying the attacker in Southport as an asylum seeker on X, has not been charged or made any admission of guilt.

“If she is charged, and if she pleads not guilty, we fear that there may be a risk that her trial is prejudiced because some of the jurors in her case may be one of the 2.3 million people who have seen the X post.”

Worth reading in full.

She should be prosecuted and sentenced to gaol time like the fake ‘Far Right’ victims of Starmer’s ‘full force of the law’ pogrom have been.

Cooper should face the full force of the law.

And so should Starmer for prejudicing pending criminal cases with his false fake news misinformation and claims about the supposed riots and especially the 100 fake ones which of course then never happened.

The UK under Starmer is more like national socialist Germany of the 1930s as every day passes.

It is scary.

Interestingly the BBC when referring to the atrocity is Southport talks about children being “killed” rather than “murdered”. Being careful not to prejudice any eventual trial, but perhaps selective in their application of this standard – for example I found lots of references to “riots” and “rioters” from recent reporting – not “alleged rioters” and “disturbances” or “protests”.

I saw one of the recordings of a judge handing down sentence the other day. He was absolutely incandescent with rage. I swear if he had a black cup under the bench he would have donned it and passed the death sentence on someone who had said nothing but the truth in a forthright manner.

Well we can’t “criticise the establishment” can we….Once the Left proclaimed to be anti- establishment, now their Long March has paid off, they only play lip service to that principle.

Journalists and the general public have to be careful to say “alleged” when talking about people who have been arrested but not yet tried. If anything, the standards for government commentary should be even tighter.

The Chancellor should have a word with here about that, to avoid the risk of having to pay out for damages. After all, if she is acting on behalf of the Gov when she says something, they could be liable.

In a sane world Pixie Balls would be the one facing a non-corrupt judge.

This is what elections won ‘from the centre ground’ look like: socialist fascism.

The indictment is not of this government.

Blair was a socialist fascist. We live in Blair’s Britain. Two tier Kier, Rachel Thieves, Yvette Blooper and the fratricidal bacon sandwich snatcher, Edstone feckwit Silibrand, all carry Blair’s (dim because wind powered and profoundly stupid) fascist eco torch as we knew they would.

But we can hardly tell them from the previous bunch of losers/tosseurs*.

Why is it that every successive government in this benighted kingdom just makes things worse?

Becausee just like Starmer who prefers the WEF and Davos etc to Westminster, they are all not doing what is best for the country but what external unelected anonymous UK and foreign interests want.

What the police are doing, which is bang out of order, is sharing the address of the person they’re arresting. Just so’s any nutter with a grievance can go round and harass the family, should they wish to do so. Can’t remember off the top of my head if they’re also printing street names in the papers but nobody, especially the police, should be doing this as this has obvious repercussions on family members living there. Here’s one they nabbed just getting off the plane. See how they love to gloat;

”A man was arrested as he stepped off the plane after his holiday for his involvement in the disorder in Southport.

Thomas Whitehead, 53, of Pool Street, Southport, was jailed for 20 months yesterday..

Watch the moment Whitehead steps off the plane & into our custody.”

If this elderly man gets sent down for saying words next month I’m really going to lose my shit. Or did he shake his zimmer frame at police in a threatening manner?? Did he charge at their riot shields, warp speed, in his mobility scooter like a human JCB?
And again, look. They give out his address;

”A man is due to appear in court after disorder in Nottingham city centre.
Keith Edwards, aged 81, has been charged with using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause fear of / provoke unlawful violence.
The charge relates to an incident in Nottingham city centre on Saturday August 3 during a pre-planned protest near Old Market Square.
Edwards, of Kinglake Place, The Meadows, has been released on bail and is due to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Friday 6 September.”

Thomas Whitehead, 53, of Pool Street, Southport, was jailed for 20 months yesterday..

Clearly was local – ie not arriving on train or bus to cause trouble.

I think addresses are published if the person is convicted – but not until then. I definitely agree that it’s a bad idea to publish these as uninvolved family members could be targeted.

No such attention to detail here, however, which is notable, or possibly I’m just cherry-picking. No time to delve further for more examples, but if this is happening more for this type of crime and this specific segment of society, is it not a further example of ‘two-tier justice’? To hell with the protesters/meme terrorists’ families right to privacy and dignity but the Muslim sex offenders’ relatives must be protected at all costs, because ‘cultural differences’;

”Abalzaq Salih, 31, from Plymouth, was convicted of two counts of rape of a female aged 15 or under, while 32-year-old Saif Kahya from Liverpool was found guilty of one count of rape of a female aged 16 or over. They will both be sentenced at Plymouth Crown Court on September 25.
Anthony Anantharajah, aged 35, from London, was convicted of one count of rape of a female aged 16 or over. He will now be sentenced at Plymouth Crown Court on September 30.”

To the Progressive Left a world view to the right is illegitimate and even criminal. Some on the left would lock you up for daring to question climate change orthodoxy. Whoever heard of that in science before? It is tyranny that takes the inquisition that condemned Galileo and turning it around to make Science into the Inquisitors now.
