Leading Men of Britain Get Ordered About by Left-wing Newspaper
In news that went largely under the radar, on May 7th the Garrick Club finally voted to allow women members – thus overturning almost 200 years of tradition. The vote, which passed with 60% in favour, came after a relentless campaign by The Guardian to shame the club into changing its membership policy.
The Guardian’s campaign began in March with the publication of a leaked membership list, characterised by the paper as a “roll-call of British Establishment”. The list’s publication undoubtedly caused immense embarrassment for various prominent members, who were suddenly forced to explain to their female colleagues how on earth they could be members of such a sexist, misogynistic, patriarchal organisation.
To give you a sense of how little people cared about the Garrick’s membership policy prior to the Guardian’s campaign, here’s a chart showing Google Search interest for ‘Garrick Club’ in the UK since 2004:
As you can see, the only major spike in the last 20 years occurred in March of 2024.
The obvious argument for maintaining the club’s long-standing traditions – as commentators such as myself, Alison Pearson and Georgia Gilholy noted – is that men and women are different. And so mixed-sex groups are different from all-male groups. This is an undeniable fact.
But dispiritingly few of the Garrick Club’s members have been willing to state it publicly. One wrote a piece for the Daily Mail ridiculing Simon Case and Richard Moore as “a pair of wimps” for resigning under pressure from the Guardian, but he wasn’t willing to reveal his own name. Even the rambunctious and gaffe-prone Boris Johnson, a former member, felt the need to state in an article defending the Garrick that “I would certainly have said that women should be admitted”.
Why? Why shouldn’t individuals voluntarily associate with members of their own sex? After all, the anti-Garrick arguments don’t stack up.
If it’s unfair for the club to exclude women, then it’s unfair for other single-sex organisations to do the same. And the membership policy was already profoundly ‘unfair’ – 99.9% of people could never hope to join due to being too poor and socially irrelevant. As regards the claim that female lawyers and politicians were at some kind of disadvantage, this is highly dubious. The vast majority of lawyers and politicians weren’t members to begin with.
Club convention apparently prevents members from talking about the club (like Fight Club, I guess). But it’s surely possible for them to make general arguments in favour of single-sex organisations. Some of the more right-thinking members, like the BBC’s John Simpson, have been opining in support of women members for years. So why couldn’t their opponents also speak out?
We aren’t privy to exactly what went on at the 7th May vote, but we do know the two-thirds majority required for previous votes to pass was abandoned in favour of a simple majority. (Recall that less than two thirds voted for the recent change.) This speaks of panic among senior members that, God forbid, the Guardian should run another unflattering article.
Why are leading men of Britain being ordered about by a left-wing newspaper? Maybe the Garrick’s roster isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Profanity and abuse will be removed and may lead to a permanent ban.
Gone are the days of bow tied, single malt swilling men in smoky back rooms shaking on deals worth millions!
It’s all rubbed in our faces openly now at places like Davos and institutions like WHO and the UN!
I dont think John Prefumo would have even made a column inch had it happened today!
And Davos etc. already include women. There is the lovely Jacinda and Angela and one day Greta will join them.
Fascinating that the membership list was leaked. I do hope we can see the list every year from now on and watch this club wither. Not because it has accepted women (monocle drops into whisky glass), but because it’s staff and members can’t be trusted to be discreet.
It strikes me the membership is much like the rest of the powers that want to be – spineless and cowardly.
Yup Stephen Fry is a good example. I used to admire him as a polymath, not so much these days. 2020 was the ultimate litmus test.
Evidently the leading men are elsewhere.
But this is just another victory lap. Like statue-toppling.
Let’s hope some trans-women join for completeness.
Or as Douglas Murray suggested, now go for the Mosques and make sure women can sit where they like. We may be waiting a while on that one.
Not being funny, Noah, but how many of us that frequent the DS site have ever been to this establishment or have any interest in doing so in the future? As your article well illustrates, 99.999% of the populace couldn’t give two hoots about what rules and regs this place had before and I’m sure the same still stands now. I didn’t even know the upmarket joint existed until DS started running articles on it. No offense, but I see this whole Garrick Club thing as a non-issue and normal folk have a gazillion other more worthy things to be concerned about and to spend their time and energies on. Issues that actually do or will impact our lives.
Now if Wetherspoons started changing to single-sex branches here and there you might pique my attention ( I’m partial to a tipple or several whenever I come visit ) but as it stands I’m pretty sure the vast majority of working and middle class people couldn’t be less interested in what the toffs wish to spend their money on or choose to whinge about. Talk about ‘first world problems’…
it’s the foot in the door, likewise I couldn’t care about this club, but I do defend the right for private clubs etc to be able to select members, just as I support the right for children only clubs and activities, female spaces, and male spaces. What has been done here is a foot in the door to blow apart the ability to allow women and children to be free of predatory males.
Agree very much with the last point. Women and men need their own spaces. Men need to get away from her indoors and women need to socialise to get away from their not so talkative spouses.
I’m just on holiday in jersey and the men’s toilets are giving away free sanitary products. Even jersey has been captured.
On the very north coast of the UK at Thurso are the public lavatories shown below. If you look at the signs you can see that this remote toilets are fully inclusive.
Well my understanding is that the members at the Garrick decided for themselves to change their rules. That’s their right. As long as the law is not changed to ban private clubs from limiting members to one sex or the other, I think we have to accept the decision that has been made.
I agree with Mogwai up to a point but would say that the decision is perhaps worth reporting on as symbolic – the membership perhaps felt pressured to make this change because of an external campaign and the prevailing view that a men-only club is somehow “wrong” – and I think this is a source for regret and concern.
As Peter Hitchens has pointed out, the foot in the door, as you call it, was done when the Church of England allowed same sex marriage.
I attend female only networking and gym groups and mixed groups. They have a different vibe and I enjoy both.
I am waiting for men to insist they join our women only groups and the WI. Or how about the Soroptomists?
It seems only fair!!!
However, I think the majority of men who have wives, girlfriends and daughters have more sense.
Transwomen less so. They bring their mostly white, male privilege with them.
So far, in my relatively rural outpost of the East Midlands, they have left us alone.
The above has been caused by a tiny percentage of entitled, elite, well paid women who I suspect wouldn’t want the plebs like me in their bastions of (now) mixed privilege.
How is it that the Guardian,s trap has not been spotted? They have just proven that single sex spaces, clubs, organisations should not be allowed, Thus now the argument for women’s single sex spaces, changing rooms , gyms, medical centres, are no longer defensible.
Another win for the women haters at the Guardian.
Precisely.
The official standpoint of the Guardian, insofar that’s expressed by editorial authors, is that’s women-only spaces are good because women are good and men-only spaces bad because men are bad. We had an article about that here not that long ago.
Here are 5 Women only clubs in London and I’m sure the Guardian will be on their case ensuring there is equity everywhere?
1. The University Women’s Club
“A haven in London for educated women”
2. The Allbright “There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other”
3. The Sorority“What belongs to you will come to you, when you create the capacity to receive it.”
4. The Trouble Club“She was looking for Trouble, and she found it”
5. The Merit Club“We are not a women-in-business network”
The conservative party are truly the castrati party.
My guess is that a lot of the members are champagne socialists
“Club convention apparently prevents members from talking about the club (like Fight Club, I guess)”
Aye and the Bilderberg Group where Globalists DO NOT talk in secret and plot to bypass the so called democratic nations.
The more general question concerns me. Should single sex clubs be allowed to exist anymore? Will men (or Trans) be demanding to join the Women’s Institute. ‘
As I understand it, the Garrick members did not vote to change their rules to admit women, which would have required the 2/3rds majority. What they did was vote to accept the legal advice that women had always (or at least since the 1920s) been eligible for membership. This was not a change to the rules and, rather neatly, required only a simple majority…
What is the Garrick Club? A male-only elite made up of MPs, judges, actors, musicians – and even King Charles Sky News Wednesday 20 March 2024
“There are said to be some 1,500 members who pay around £1,000 a year to socialise in the club’s exclusive dining rooms.”
No wonder the Grauniad don’t like ’em. Orf wiv dare ‘eds!!
Keir Stammer would slap another 20% on VAT on them out of spite if he could to keep Raynor off his back.
Raynor knows all too well that first you have to be fully behind Stammer to stab him in the back.
Men lacking in the gonads department. Many clubs have been ruined by admitting women as full members. Men to join the WI next?
