Courts May Abandon Wigs Amid Claims of ‘Hair Discrimination’
English courts could soon stop requiring barristers to wear wigs due to ‘cultural insensitivity’ claims. The Telegraph has the details.
The judiciary is poised to update its court dress code following complaints by some barristers that the traditional headpieces discriminate against those with Afro-Caribbean hair.
Judges are currently reviewing proposals made by the Bar Council, which represents barristers in England and Wales, with changes expected to be made this autumn at the earliest. No decisions have been made.
It follows widespread criticism from several black barristers who have called for compulsory wigs to be scrapped.
The potential changes come after Michael Etienne, a barrister who is black and has an afro hairstyle, sparked a public debate in 2022 after being ordered to wear a wig in court or face disciplinary action.
He branded the policy as hair discrimination, a form of racism.
A Bar Council spokesman said: “Following questions from barristers about wigs and hair discrimination, the Bar Council set up a working group to consider court dress in the context of all protected characteristics.
“The findings of the working group are currently being discussed with the judiciary as part of our regular dialogue on equality and diversity matters.”

Equality and diversity – there’s the answer. And after wigs the next push will be to allow traditional dress so the rasta mob will be turning up with dreadlocks and wearing red, yellow and green and the issies will present in their pyjamas.
Why does everything about equality and diversity result in a lowering of standards and increased divisions?

Although I find myself cross with so many things nowadays, I do think the wigs have served their time. The dress was of its time but it does nothing for the competence (or otherwise) of the advocate in question.
It’s late (for me) and I need sleep before I get into researching the reasons for the headgear, but on the face of it I’d have very little problem being defended by a Rastafarian with a large hat in traditional colours, but I’d need this to come with an excellent and solid command of the legal system. I would hope the judge wouldn’t hold my choice of advocate against me.
I’ve never really thought about it or given a stuff about the attire of the British judiciary, to be honest. However, after reading this nonsense I really hope they keep the damn things in situ on their heads. Fair enough, get rid of them for the right reasons, such as they’re not very hygienic, stink of moth balls and make your head itch, but to start bringing in this whole woke/microaggression/racist/hair discrimination cobblers is just plain mental. When I was in school, one of my mates had exactly the kind of hair these self-styled Afro-Caribbean claim to be exclusively theirs and when he didn’t keep it closely cropped, he got exactly the same kind of hair-balloon look. Hence, this claim of racial discrimination is balooney. The guy simply has long hair and doesn’t want to cut it despite the official dress code for the job he’s working in demands this.
Everyone entering the legal profession knows what is entailed. So, some afro-caribean decides to develop a career in the legal system but doesn’t like the wig, the solution…Cultural insensitivity. Another ‘ism that has now been born.
I wish these people would just F O to somewhere they know they will fit in, somewhere like the slums of Jamaica, and leave we honky, white Brits alone. We don’t want these people and certainly don’t need them.
People who believe that culture equals hairdo should perhaps simply be excluded from universities as they clearly lack the intellectual capacity for higher education, no matter how good they might be at rote learning of stuff they’ll never really understand.

My oldest friend – and best man at my wedding – had exactly the same “Afro” hairstyle (back in the late 70s). And he was a white Yorkshireman.
It looked bloody silly (though I never told him so), and we’re still friends nearly fifty years later.
Precisely! My son who is half-Jewish (and a lawyer) has what he calls a Jew-fro: in other words, if he doesn’t keep his hair short it becomes ‘balloon hair’. The solution is: cut your hair!

This is like the Ethnic African who joined the British Army and then sued them because he felt cold in his standard British Army kit while working outside in cold British weather. He said they should have taken special measures to keep him warmer than British troops, because of his African Ethnicity.
The “special measures” should have been booting him straight back to his ancestral homeland.

They call it “inclusivity”…….My mate is a fireman and he tells me there is a 5ft 3 woman in his team and her feet cannot reach the floor of the fire engine so they have a little wooden box for her. But who do we really want rescuing our children from the burning building? The 6 ft 3 man or the 5 ft 3 woman. There are times when inclusivity trumps common sense but politicians don’t seem to care.
To be fair, I think she’d come into her own when it’s time for the inevitable rescue mission of a cat stuck up a tree though. Everyone has their strengths..

Of course it is. OTOH – that’s what matters for the “victim party” here – it’s a British tradition and therefore, badist in uncountable ways and it must go. This must not happen in the course of some sensible, voluntary reform getting rid of this antiquated fashion but must be – with loud clamour – forced by professional victims belonging to the political left. Like all of Europe, Britain is supposed to become a faceless area populated by a perfectly random global multitude and for this to happen, English identity must be eliminated.
