Self-Censorship in the U.S. and Germany is Increasing, Studies Find
We know that large percentages of academics and students refrain from expressing their views on certain topics for fear of being denounced, mobbed or formally sanctioned. Self-censorship on campus is frequently discussed in the media – and rightly so. But what’s the situation in the population at large? And how has it changed over time?
Recently, two relevant studies came to my attention. The first is from the United States. In a paper published last year, James Gibson and Joseph Sutherland collated all the surveys they could find that had asked Americans a simple question: “What about you personally? Do you or don’t you feel as free to speak your mind as you used to?”
This question is not necessarily ideal, though it has the advantage that it was first put to the American people way back in 1954 by the sociologist Samuel Stouffer – which permits the study of long-term trends. When the authors plotted the percentage who said they did not feel free to speak their mind over time, this is what they found:

There is a clear increase in self-censorship. (Although note that the years on the x-axis are not always consecutive because they represent the specific years in which surveys were available.) In 1954, only 13% of Americans said they did not feel free to speak their mind. By 1987, this had grown to 21%; by 2011 to 31%; and by 2020 to 46%.
So around half of Americans say they don’t feel free to speak their mind. And interestingly, a substantial portion of the change since 1954 has occurred over just the last 10 years – corresponding to the Great Awokening.
The second study that came to my attention is from Germany. Researchers from the Allensbach Institute for Demoscopy asked a sample of Germans, “Do you have the feeling that you can express your political opinion freely in Germany today, or is it better to be careful?”
This is a question they first post back in 1953 (in West Germany), although unfortunately the figures published in the study only go back to 1990 (the year of reunification). Here’s what the researchers found:

Here too, there has been a marked rise in self-censorship. Back in 1990, only 16% of Germans said it’s better to be careful. By 2017, this had grown to 25%; and by 2023 to 44%. Like in the United States, almost half the population say they don’t feel free to express their political opinions, with a large portion of the change having occurred over just the last 10 years.
Interestingly, the researchers found that only among Green voters was there a majority who said they can express their political opinions freely. Among supporters of the Alternative für Deutschland party, 62% said it is better to be careful. This Left-Right divide is also present in the U.S., where Republicans are much more likely to refrain from saying these due to the political climate.
Since the start of the Great Awokening in 2012 or thereabouts, Americans and Germans have become much more likely to self-censor. And the same is almost certainly true in other Western countries. So much for the liberal West.

These AI images are really spooky. As if the whole thing is designed to design our future.
Notice how whenever AI generates pictures of controlling, evil and totalitarian entities in despotic futurist uniforms, there’s always a decided lack of ethnic diversity!
AI seems to like a neat tie knot though.
No getting away from the fact the whole world is turning commie!
Communism always was there and always will be. It’s just that at times its opposition (liberty) is weak, so it starts to gain the upper hand.
A bit like sickness in the body – if you don’t actively work to keep yourself healthy, the “bad humours” take over.
Facilis descensus Averno, noctes atque dies patet atri ianua Ditis. Sed, revocare gradum superasque evadere ad auras – hoc opus, hic labor est.
It’s one of the longer bits of Virgil’s Aeneid I committed to memory, years ago…
Easy decent into hell is exactly where we’re heading, the western world at least!
The psychology of group think. —-People fear ridicule and it is easier to “button it” than be called a “racist”, a “denier” or an “Islamophobe”. ——-Truth is a lonely warrior.
The simple fact, especially off the back of my personal experiences of being censored here on DS, is that both ‘free speech’ and ‘hate speech’ are whatever the people with the power to censor say they are. In fact, I’d go as far as to say that both are just illusions anyway. If Labour come to power aren’t they going to bring in their ‘Race Relations Act’, or whatever it’s called, whereby everybody speaking out about any religion ( but I think you can guess the main one I have in mind ) will be breaking the law, because somebody somewhere will always take offence and want to take, what was just an off the cuff, innocuous remark, out of context and go full-on ”Snowflake” on their arse! There can be no genuine free speech with unlawful laws such as that in place. It’s all surely meaningless word salad..How can something be defended if it isn’t even real in the first place? Much like democracy actually..
The Nazi Pug comes to mind.
But Islam is not just a religion, it is a legal and political system also, and if it is political you should be free to have an opinion, and if you can have an opinion it cannot just be a favourable one. There must also be the freedom to criticise as we do regarding all political issues. ——–Hand wringing hates speech nonsense are the laws of cowards.
By the way——What form did the censorship take on DS, and regarding what?
”Here too, there has been a marked rise in self-censorship.” Damn right there is, Noah. In fact, every time I log in to this site I’m visualizing a ”red alert” going out to DS HQ and the mods jumping into action, ready to proofread my posts, as they’ve admitted to me they’re doing. What it is to feel ‘special’…. I got the word ”sadistic” removed from a post yesterday, in relation to describing what Hamas and their evil supporters did to the Israelis on Oct 7th. The words/terminology I’m not allowed to post seem to be increasing constantly. Crazy. It just makes me paranoid and absolutely it curtails what I would actually like to post, therefore the ”So around half of Americans say they don’t feel free to speak their mind”, I concur with. So if I don’t post anything for more than 3 days straight it’s because I’ve been banned! One of the main problems, I think, is the ever evolving definition of ‘hate speech’, which would mean that ‘free speech’ is being misused and weaponized, in my opinion. Examples abound all over the place, of course, what with there being a pandemic of the ‘woke’ mind virus. All… Read more »
Speech hated by Minister Śmizek has a pretty obvious focus:
“The time has come to ban disgusting, homophobic, discriminatory statements in the public sphere,” declared Śmiszek, who is […] homosexual.
I thought the guy who pulled himself up on a loo separation wall in order to gawp at my penis was pretty disgusting. But I guess Śmizek would disagree with that to the point that he’d like to ban statements like this one.
The religion of peace not included!
As card-carrying member of the religion of molesting other men on public toilets — After all, one can never know and has to do something in order to get laid! — he probably doesn’t care very much about muslims in general, as these aren’t usually forced to use rest rooms he has access to.
No lessons from Communist occupation then!
This is misinterpreting the numbers from Germany. In a country where the head of government openly threatens that everyone known to be in favour of actually applying existing laws regarding rejected asylum seekers will find himself in the crosshairs of the inland secret service, 44% of the people believing it’s better to be careful when expressing one’s own opinion means 44% of the people knowing that expressing their opinions will get them into possibly serious trouble, ie, that almost half of the population are now suppressed dissidents.
But thank God present day Germany is a free society.
“only among Green voters was there a majority who said they can express their political opinions freely”….No surprise there when you consider they represent establishment views. Funny how the Great Awokening happened just after Occupy Wall Street protests, convenient that!
The next generaton will be sensitivity within sensitivity, scared of their own shadow basically and that is the plan. If you had a weakling son, how would you get him out of it? You would have to condition him to pain incrementally. It is the only way. Doesn’t matter about pleasure or pain or convenience. If it does matter then you are doomed.
There is an easy way out of the trap of ‘self-censorship’. Just live your life taking risks. If you find that too frightening then they have already got you and you might as well disappear. It always comes back to the spark.
Try it with us. Try it with working class scumbags like me. They are admittedly slow to rise but its only because of what I see recently that I stand with them.If you have nothing to add then just carry on. I agree not many people put up a fight.
