BBC Licence Fee £15 Increase Too High, Culture Secretary Says

Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer has strongly opposed the suggested £15 hike in the BBC licence fee, deeming it “absolutely” excessive and a further strain on the cost of living. Here’s an excerpt from the BBC’s report:

The licence fee has been frozen for the last two years at £159 but is due to rise in April in line with inflation.

It’s currently expected to increase to £173.30 a year, but Ms. Frazer said she was looking at which measure of inflation to use to calculate the rise.

Asked by BBC Breakfast whether the Government was looking at whether £15 would be too much of an increase, Ms. Frazer replied: “Absolutely. I think that is quite a significant rise, so that is exactly what we are looking at.”

She added: “We froze the licence fee for two years to help households with their daily payments. That freeze has come to an end and the licence fee is due to rise with inflation but we’re looking at ways to make sure that is sustainable for families across the country.”

The Sunday Times reported that Ms. Frazer is considering using September’s consumer price index (CPI) rate of inflation, rather than the higher 12-month average, to calculate how much the cost of the licence fee should rise by.

Using September’s inflation rate of 6.7%, the licence fee would be expected to rise by £10.65 to £169.65 per year.

The Culture Secretary confirmed she would make the final decision on what the fee should be soon.

Ms. Frazer also said she was also looking at how “we fund the BBC going forward”.

“It’s unsustainable because 400,000 people did not renew their licence fee over the last year. The media landscape is changing. We’re not consuming the BBC like we used to consume it, so I’m also looking at a broader review,” she said. …

Members of the public have been sharing their opinions on the planned increase to the licence fee on BBC Radio 5 Live.

Craig from Oxford told broadcast Nicky Campbell he does not watch enough BBC content to justify the cost of the licence fee and would “much rather pay less to stream just what I want, it’s about offering people choice”.

Janey from Northampton agreed, and added “to take away people’s choice is not how we should be running the law of the land”, saying the licence fee is not value for money as she does not watch any BBC programmes on the TV.

One of the deepest psyops of all time. The proles pay their masters to beat them into submission. Some of my friends that are down the deepest rabbit holes are still paying the license fee. Stop it.

Well I don’t consider myself deluded or pro-war. Vaguely pro-Israel I suppose (or anti those who seek to fight them) though I do see both sides of this. So far it looks complicated to me, with no easy answers and no obvious solutions – but then that’s not surprising.

I don’t see much in the way of “pro-war” views being expressed.

Really… Are you serious??
This damn forum oozes it.. Can’t wait to leave it.

There’s about 3 contributors on here that think the whole situation is barbaric and that have called for a cessation in the destruction and murdering of the Palestinians..

The rest are just like Galloway says about our governments..

More than happy to see the slaughter.

Off to vomit on their behalf…

If this forum “f**** with” your mental health, then leave it. Nobody is keeping you here except yourself.

You’re like a miserly fool who has paid for a meal that’s making him sick, but because he has paid for it, he keeps on eating because he wants his money’s worth!

Your constant promises are tiresome and are reminiscent of the current crop occupying the House of Commons. Why not do the DS membership a favour and honour this latest commitment? And always remember – you will be supporting your mental health in the doing.

Win Win.

Please don’t leave. We need all sides of the argument having their say on any debate. I don’t agree with anything you have said in the last few posts, but free speech is dead if those with whom you share no viewpoint are excluded from discussions.

You can be currently pro-Israel in the sense that Israel has the right to defend itself against genocidal thugs, while being against the historical roots of Zionism. One may or may not believe in a “promised” land or a Jewish homeland as a refuge from historical persecution. But one thing we should all agree upon: In the wake of any terror attack, Oct 7th included, a state has the right to defend its people by strategically targeting Hamas military bases. Remember Israel is not committing a war crime in this current circumstance, has warned the Palestinians of the impending retaliatory attack and the IDF has gone to great lengths to try and get as many Palestinians out of harm’s way through humanitarian corridors allowing people the chance to escape to the south. Hamas on the other hand simply wants the wholesale destruction of the Jewish population and for Israel not to exist.
And by the way, what on earth gives you the idea that this readership is “msm worshipping”? I for one, and I suspect most of the commentariat under the line, are the exact opposite – reviled by most of the mainstream media!

What happened was clearly, at the very least, allowed by Israel, more likely planned by them.

Netanyahu knew what was going down – they had been been warned by Egypt – it was ignored. Netanyahu could hardly contain his glee when it did. We are supposed to believe Mossad, the CIA, MI5 hadn’t a clue? Yeh right!

When you attack civilians you are no longer a freedom fighter. That said, and as others have mentioned, many are sceptical about the IDF, Mossad etc not knowing about the attack and many are protesting the PM.

I regard both Muslims and Jews as primitive savages: they practice circumcision and regard bacon sarnies as unclean.

I wish there were none in the UK: their presence really isn’t in our interests.

I support the Palestinians for two basic reasons:

They’re the indigenous population, while almost all of the Jews are recent invaders.

Huge numbers of ethnically-cleansed Palestinians would be invited here by our utterly anti-British government.

I didn’t downvote (not my style) though some of the downvotes may have been more in response to the style and language used than disagreeing with the views expressed.

I’m not “vaxxed” at all, btw, and I strongly doubt that many others are that post here. The Israel issue seems to have divided the “lockdown sceptic community” sort of down the middle in some ways.

We stopped paying the BBC licence fee several years ago, people don’t realise that if you avoid watching ‘live’ TV programmes you can legally do so.

What are the exemptions to having a licence?
You do not need a licence if you watch TV on demand for services including ITV Hub, All 4, Amazon Prime and Netflix, but you do need on if you are using BBC iPlayer.

By calling it the “BBC” license fee, they screwed up in ways they can’t even comprehend.
