“My State Banned Conversion Therapy. It’s Been a Disaster”

The Conservatives think they are being clever by bringing in a ‘conversion therapy’ ban for LGB but not T, but it’s bound to backfire, says Moira Deeming, an independent member of the Victoria Legislative Council in Australia, writing in the Telegraph. Victoria banned ‘conversion therapy’ in 2021 and it’s been a disaster.

Everyone is familiar with the highly successful campaign the Left has run, telling people that not helping children who think they were born in the wrong body to undergo irreversible medical procedures is as bigoted as trying to persuade adolescents they’re not gay.

You know the line: if you don’t accept this premise, you’ll be responsible for the misery of vulnerable young people. But that’s no excuse to be weak willed. We as adults, parents and lawmakers must take responsibility for protecting children. We must not be passive, nor self-serving. When it comes to protecting children, we must be ferocious.

To criminalise – in any degree whatsoever – the instinct of loving parents and ethical clinicians to divert gender distressed young people away from irreversible interventions like puberty blockers, cross sex hormones and surgeries would be an unforgivable safeguarding failure.

Yet I have recently learned that the British Government is thinking about legislating on this issue. As I understand it, the Conservatives are tempted by the idea of being able to take credit before Labour comes to power for a politically savvy ‘conversion therapy ban’ that will appease all sides and reduce the likelihood of children being medically transitioned.

As a politician in the Australian state of Victoria, allow me to enlighten you: it cannot be done. We passed a conversion therapy ban in 2021 – much to my dismay – that has made it a criminal offence for parents and clinicians to do anything other than affirm the self-diagnosis of gender confused children. Recommending a course of psychotherapy, or just asking them to pause and reflect, is an attempt to ‘convert’ them.

You can bet your bottom dollar that any attempt to protect these vulnerable young people – banning ‘conversion therapy’ for the LGBs, but not the Ts – will be swept away by the powerful LGBT lobby as the bill makes its way through Parliament. You will end up in the place we are in Victoria, where a parent cannot ask a child to reconsider a decision to have a double mastectomy without risking prosecution.

If the Conservative Government really wants to do something to protect vulnerable adolescents, it should do what I wish we’d done, and pass a law making it a criminal offence to help anyone under the 18 transition.

Children do not have the capacity to consent to loss of fertility, sexual function, or long-term health. We shouldn’t allow these things to be done to any children, not gay children, not autistic children, and certainly not children who are confused about their gender.

I’m not a parent but I have nieces and nephews and I hope they don’t succumb to this nonsense. They’re each beautiful kids and I hope they stay as they are. Hopefully enough people are waking up to the need to inoculate kids by discussing the woke mind-virus before the teachers can poison their minds. Warn them of the danger of social media filter-bubbles in transmission of the virus. Tell them it’s okay not to jump on the bandwagon and, if their friends do, then perhaps they’re not good friends. Say it’s okay if they don’t fit into the conventional stereotypes, that it’s going to be fine later on. But the teachers are getting in there pretty early so I don’t know how easily a 7 year old can resist. Graham Linehan relates an anecdote where he met a father who’d fallen off the wagon big-time through grief that he’d not been able to stop his daughter taking testosterone and she’d changed before his eyes, gaining irreversible male traits. If I were a parent I would be willing to be arrested for this, martyring myself for the cause, otherwise I’d be neglecting my true role. Take me to court you… Read more »

I see nothing here about the results of Victoria’s ban so am in the dark in what way it has been a ‘disaster’. Perhaps a description is in the link but the article is behind a paywall. It could be asked how the ban has been enforced in Victoria and what the results have in fact been. That would be new information, and perhaps would justify the headline.

This off-topic is a bit more relevant to today’s goings on.

I wonder if there’s anyone who was at today’s count demo and can tell us what actually happened. All I’ve seen is the predictable smears from the MSM say that a far right mob attacked the police. I’m sure a number of people, probably a tiny minority, on that demo were looking for a fight, but I suspect the police were heavy handed, possibly to deliberately provoke the demonstrators so the MSM could then smear them.
I wish I could of been there, but I was with them in spirit when I heckled a pro Hamas rally (sorry a gathering calling for a humanitarian ceasefire that in no way backed a genocidal banned terrorist group) in Inverness. The only response anyone came up with was to call me a paedophile, now who’s guilty of hate speech? Perfectly sums up the intellectual capabilities of these idiots.

Another guy worthy of big respect. And another reason why these marches are nothing to do with ”peace”, otherwise, much like the psychos ripping down posters of Jewish hostages all over the world, nutters ( virtually always masked, because they’re just cowardly yobs ) like this wouldn’t be triggered to react aggressively to someone holding a sign which literally states the truth. But it’s like somebody held up a sign insulting their mothers! Does this sort of thing not say it all about the mindset? What we need is to see people holding up these signs en masse. They can’t bully and harass a large number of people doing this. It would appear the pro-Jihad protestors condone everything Hamas does and I get the impression they idolize the sick b’stards. Well they must do if a bloody sign held by a lone man offends their eyes!

Guilty by association is how I’d describe a lot of people on the pro Palestine marches, and anyone who comments that they support these people or call Israel a oppressor nation.
Simply by waving Palestinian flags they’ve taken sides. Sadly they’ve sided with people who take their values from the deranged rantings of a barbaric, misogynistic 7th century paedophile rather than civilized values.

I was there from 10am. Heard a bit of shouting from my spot about 100 yards away from the Cenotaph.People were chatting with each other and respectful of the occasion.
Tight camera angles and a police force that dares to be violent against English people is not a long term solution.

That sounds like a far more realistic version of events than the one presented by the woke MSM.

Does the method that the BBC use for counting the size of protest marches depend on the cause being protested? During the Lockdown marches the numbers were under-reported by a factor of at least 10, so that 10,000 became a “few hundred [far-right] antivaxxers.
Conversely the BBC report of the Palestinian marches talks of 300,000 pro-Palestinian protesters, apparently spotted from a BBC reporter at the police HQ. This time, of course, it was the counter-demonstration that were the “far-right” mob. The anti-lockdown protest marches usually ended with a bit of good-willed argy-bargy to allow the photographers to get some theatrical gore for the Sunday newspapers before the police sweep the stragglers away. I hope this evening end similarly without casualties.
I wonder what measurement technique Marianna Spring will employ?

Labelling people as “far right” is simply a lazy way out to avoid saying what the person doing the labelling thinks is wrong with their point of view.
Sadly it’s clear that there were far more people, but probably not the 500,000 claimed by the MSM, on the pro baby butcherers march than the counter demo, but this just shows the sad state this country’s in.

The phantom down ticker strikes again. IMO DS should remove the ability to like or dislike comments. If someone disagrees with something another person has said they should pay £5 and say why they disagree so others can respond to their opinions rather than hiding behind a simple click.
