Do Not Heat Your Homes in the Evenings, Says Net Zero Quango
Millions of families have been urged by a green quango not to heat their homes in the evening to help the Government hit its Net Zero target. The Telegraph has the story.
The Climate Change Committee (CCC) said people should turn off their radiators at peak times as part of a wider drive to deliver “emissions savings”.
In a document on “behaviour change” the body recommended Britons “pre-heat” their houses in the afternoon when electricity usage is lower.
It said the move would save families money, but critics suggested the real reason was that renewables will not be able to provide enough energy to cope with peak demand.
The advice is contained in the CCC’s sixth “carbon budget” paper, which sets out how the U.K. should reduce its emissions between 2033-37.
In it the quango suggests people with electrically powered heating systems, such as heat pumps, should switch off their radiators in the evening.
“There is significant potential to deliver emissions savings, just by changing the way we use our homes,” the dossier states.
“Where homes are sufficiently well insulated, it is possible to pre-heat ahead of peak times, enabling access to cheaper tariffs which reflect the reduced costs associated with running networks and producing power during off-peak times.”
The green quango said that by 2033 all newly built homes and up to half of those constructed after 1952 should be suitable for such pre-heating.
But critics said the advice was just the latest example of Britons being asked to compromise on their quality of life so the Government can hit climate targets.
Andrew Montford, the director of Net Zero Watch said: “The grid is already creaking, and daft ideas like this show just how much worse it will become.
“It’s clear that renewables are a disaster in the making. We now need political leaders with the courage to admit it.”
Craig Mackinlay, head of the Net Zero Scrutiny group of Tory MPs, added: “It is becoming clear that adherence to judicable Carbon Budgets and edicts coming from the CCC are developing into farce.
“The Climate Change Act 2008 will require amendment to free us from madcap and impractical targets foisted upon the population by long departed politicians.
“This latest advice to freeze ourselves on cold evenings merely shows the truth that the dream of plentiful and cheap renewable energy is a sham.
“I came into politics to improve all aspects of my constituents’ lives, not make them colder and poorer.”

I misread the first line and thought is said ‘queer quango’. Makes much more sense, right? – it’s the same effing logic!
How many does it take to quango, I wonder?
It takes 2 to quango but its to late to teach you to dance!
But Craig, Mr Mackinlay, sir, your constituents will feel warmer and richer for their virtuous sacrifice to save the planet for future generations. Surely, this is a good thing, Craig. Surely.
For all his protestations on Brexit and Green issues he sustains in office the Conservative governments who have failed us on those very issues. Recall that CM’s election involved malpractice by Conservatives to keep out Farage.
One is reminded of Ceaușescu, who had all the thermometers recalibrated when people complained of the cold. Nothing is new.
All Part of Agenda 2030.
Sandy Adams spells it out more clearly than I ever could here:

No need to turn them off if you can’t afford to turn them on in the first place. There is more than one way etc…
I can afford to turn them on, and as I don’t have a smart meter can’t be charged “surge rates”
Our meter is dated 1972 ,it still works and it’s staying until it claps out!
I am being pressured to agree a replacement meter. Of course they want to install a “smart” one. How long can I continue to ignore them. Can they force the issue.
I’m getting periodic calls from whoever my electricity provider presently is[*] trying to talk me into a getting a smart meter. I wouldn’t even mind that as my electricty meter is locked away from me in a cabinet in the hallway and I don’t have a way to contact the person with the key, hence, I cannot supply meter readings and keep being charged fantasy bills. OTOH, my rent contract explicitly prohibits me from changing anything related to the electricity supply and hence, I’ve been telling them for years that they need to talk to the landlord and not me. As they’re apparently unwilling to do that, I expect the issue to remain in this state for an indefinite time.
[*] While I’m prohibted from changing my electricty supplier, my electricity supplier is apparently allowed to sell my contract whenever he sees fit.
I get weekly mails and regular barrages of calls at all times of the day from my provider asking me ‘when I want to arrange an appointment to have a smart meter installed’ (note pressurising language). I ignore the lot. There is no legal requirement for one and until such time as there is they can go suck on a wasp.
“There is no legal requirement for one and until such time as there is they can go suck on a wasp.”
Same here.
I had a smart meter installed some years back. It us first generation so only saves me the hassle of reading the meter, it is only a one way simple comms link and they can’t even supply a new wireless monitor to replace my broken one, as they are no longer made.
Same here.
The CCC can **** right off. All that needs to be said. Oh hell, let’s say it again
**** RIGHT OFF
FOXTROT is the word you’re looking for, Jeremy.
And as a conspectus, SNAFU would be appropriate.
or even FUBAR…
….absolutely..they can pi*s off!……have just got a delivery of logs and briquettes for the log burner..and will be getting more over the coming months…kiss my aspidistra!!
Yup – the only time we switched on our central heating (oil fired) the past two winters is when it has been brass monkeys in the morning; half an hour later, with the wood burner a burning, off it goes.
When the quango decides to pay all my heating bills it can decide when I use the heating. Until then, they can foxtrot oscar.
Steve Holliday (Head of the National Grid)–“We re going to have to get used to using electricity as and when it is available”. —–He made that comment about 10 years ago. What he meant ofcourse is that as we increasingly rely on wind for electricity there won’t be enough of it so we will have to only have it when it is available if the wind happens to be blowing. Since then we have had more and more and more thousands of turbines all paid for by the taxpayer as no one in their right mind would build them without the 100% subsidy to be creamed. We have had the smart meter roll out trying to convince us all we will save money. Nope. It will cost us money as the time we are using electricity will now be known and the price will be adjusted at peak times to discourage use. We now have the highest electricity prices in Europe. So much for the FREE WIND. But you have to hand to this guy for his bare faced cheek and audacity to have part of his energy policy as telling people to simply TURN IT OF. ——-But the smart… Read more »
‘We now need political leaders with the courage to admit it.”
Don’t be naive.
The Sunak/Hunt cartel that stole the government from Truss have zero intention to do this. They’re merely running the clock down on the 80 seat majority so Starmer can continue the Unaparty terror.
Net Zero liberty/cash/privacy is core doctrine for these extremists. Ignore their words – watch their actions.
“…the body recommended Britons “pre-heat” their houses in the afternoon when electricity usage is lower.”
Cue higher prices in the afternoon.
Honestly, the stupidity of the green loons is astonishing.
and when they are out at work…
I don’t see the problem. If people are cold in the evening, they can identify as warm. Claiming to be warm and actually being warm are the same thing, isn’t that right?
In the same way Sunak self-identifies as a prime minister instead of one of schwabs neutered pooches.
I identify as a Black Californian, and I claim my $50 million, Gavin Newsome.
I recently wrote to the Pensions Minister to tell him I self-identify as an 85 yr old female …. and am therefore owed 25 years back-dated State Pension which I’d like as a lump-sum payment.
I was astounded that they took the claim seriously and replied. However, whilst I could self-identify as a man, dog, the moon or pretty-much anything else ….. when it comes to State Pensions it’s not permitted. There’s a surprise …. NOT.
Not sure who the guy in the lead picture is but his the spitting image of a brain dead Loon!
Bring on a 1964 or 1979 winter! Ooo you’ll be able to hear the power infrastructure groaning under its own ill maintained and long underfinanced weight!
We are due for a cold winter, for which most are not prepared for. So turn your heating off in the evening, it is remarkable how warm you will feel when second degree hyperthermia sets in. It started of…Once upon a time…. and ended… and they didn’t live happily ever after.
ITYM hypothermia. Hyperthermia is something very different.
oops, I did mean hypothermia, but their idiocy does make ones blood go hypothermic.
They probably didn’t live!😃
And these energy shortages are happening before we all have heat pumps and EVs to charge. Still, when it’s cold, you can always huddle around the glowing warmth of an EV battery.
And you get a fireworks show into the bargain. What’s not to like
Here’s me leading by action not words!
As Marcus Aurelius stated, CCC can Foxtrot right Oscar 🖕
Ha ha ha ha ha.
Everyone must get rid of their gas boilers and put in electric heat pumps.
Ok, now switch your electric hear pumps off.
Hahahhaahaha.
I’m literally laughing my head off.
Yeh! it is laughable. From what I can gather, it would be difficult to determine whether the heating with heat pumps is either on or off, from reading the declared heat levels attainable by this system.
To enable a decent heat dissipation from the radiators they will need to be huge. Plus you will need excessive insulation and almost a hermetically sealed living space. This will encourage mould and mildew growth to assist in the advance of the death rates by respiratory disorders, and there is always the potential for that warm feeling you get just before you keel over with oxygen deprivation due the the reduced air flow. All this is to help the heat pump you have just turned off because of the inadequate supply of electrical power because the government has an agenda that isn’t quite working out as directed/ dictated/ expected.
“because the government has an agenda that isn’t quite working out as directed/ dictated/ expected.”
However, if you keel over, perhaps from a government point of view it is working as expected.
Whether this piss ant civil service drone knows it or not, he’s talking about reducing a total UK global CO2 output of 0.00001%.
A trace gas without a solitary shred of scientific evidence linking it to atmospheric temperature control. I think they all know it.
I think they all know it.
You’re crediting them with far too much intelligence, curiosity and independence of thought.
But..but…global boiling means we won’t need the heat on anyway? Or does it work like facemasks, so your heating keep me warm? So hard to keep up.
They’re planning new whole body masks so they keep you warm and cosy and safe from the latest edition of covid!
Is it like a body bag?
Very likely to be if you have more jabs. 2500 excess deaths per week and still not a peep out of the MSM.
Many homes with heat pumps will be on smart meters and so if this voluntary initiative does not go well, the next step will be that your heating will be controlled centrally, via your smart meter.
I am just glad that we have a big supply of wood in for the wood burner and as yet there are no restrictions on wood-burners in rural areas.
“and as yet there are no restrictions on wood-burners in rural areas.”
and never will be in my house or they will have to come an physically stop me using mine! and boy, there’ll be blood on the moon if they try!
“The advice is contained in the CCC’s sixth “carbon budget” paper,…”
Much like the Soviet Union’s 5 years plans then?
Marcus Aurelius said “The object of life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding yourself in the ranks of the insane.” The following few examples are insane and is what is driving the insanity of telling people to turn off the heating at a time when every human in all of history has lit a fire to stay warm. “So the need for another economic model is urgent, and if the climate justice movement can show that responding to climate change is the best chance for a more just economic system…” Naomi Klein “Isn’t the only hope for the planet that the industrialized civilizations collapse? Isn’t it our responsibility to bring that about?” Maurice Strong “It is the fight for a new economy, a new energy system, a new democracy, a new relationship to the planet and to each other, for land, water, and food sovereignty, for Indigenous rights, for human rights and dignity for all people. When climate justice wins we win the world that we want.” Naomi Klein “Giving society cheap, abundant energy would be the equivalent of giving an idiot child a machine gun” Paul Ehrlich “We contend that the… Read more »
Also Philip Mountbatten-Windsor: human population “reaching plague proportions”; D Attenborough “we are a plague on the earth”. Shouldn’t that read “WEF are a plague on the earth”? In which case I agree.
In our village they recently built a few social housing homes. Great! Much needed. It was interesting to see their construction. They are built largely of softwood frames filled with insulation, which are all bolted together. The outside is either rendered or bricked, the inside plasterboard and plastered. They are all heated by ashp’s. We had an extension built a few years ago in the traditional style of breeze block and a brick exterior with the gap filled with insulation. Our exterior walls are considerably thicker than those of these new houses. I thought the whole idea was to have increased insulation in newly built homes in order to reduce the heating needs. These houses are just cheap with large windows and minimal depth of insulation foam. I pity the poor people now living in them. We are very prone to power cuts, and I have read that ashp’s don’t like the power being cut suddenly (or flicking on and off, as often happens) and can take some resetting. I, too, think we are in for a long cold winter. Poor sods, they are going to spend a fortune on being cold.
Timber frame houses are very warm, I’ve lived in one for a number of years, their downfall is condensation! If not build correctly they won’t last long!
But you can’t be allowed to have ventilation, it makes the insulation so much less effective!
“… to help the Government hit its Net Zero target.”
And change our lifestyles to ‘save’ the NHS.
The People serving the State.
Isn’t the Government supposed to serve the People?
“In a document on “behaviour change” the body recommended Britons “pre-heat” their houses in the afternoon when electricity usage is lower.”
Earth calling, Earth calling: if everybody ‘pre-heats’ (can one post-heat?) in the afternoon, then electricity use will be higher, just transferring it from evening to afternoon.
Ye gods! These folks are idiots.
It’s about “spreading the load” on the creaking – and soon to be collapsing – electricity grid.
When we have power cuts this winter and old people start freezing to death in their homes, perhaps then the public will wake up to what’s being done to them in the name of this sick cult.
And what will the government do in return to help me have a comfortable last few years of my life?
At the moment they are making life difficult in almost every respect. My private pension funded entirely through my own efforts is being eroded, my costs are going up, my savings have dropped and I dread having a medical emergency. A warm home is likely to be the only luxury left to me, so I am bu99ered if I am going to give that up to help that ungrateful lot.
The omnibus targets for destruction are quangos – all quangos. I never even knew the word when I was young – its proper definition is a dangerous, parasitic organisation created and operating as the enemy of democracy and the tool of tyranny.
It would be useful if the hypocrites promoting this policy spelled out how many frail/elderly/vulnerable people they are happy to see die of the cold each winter in order to achieve their Net Zero obsession.
It’s very important to know the level of collateral damage they consider acceptable.
We’ve recently had an example with the mRNA jabs: thousands killed; millions injured.
