Time is Running Out for Ukraine as U.S. Election Threatens White House Support
Time is not on the side of the Ukrainian armed forces in their long-running counter-offensive, writes Colonel Richard Kemp in the Telegraph. They are battling not just against the strongest Russian defences but also the clocks of eastern European weather and US electoral politics. Here’s an excerpt.
Now it looks like the Ukrainians have identified the most favourable axis of attack, from south of Zaporizhia towards Melitopol, and they seem to be committing elements of the NATO-equipped and trained 10th Operational Corps. Of the various options, that would be the most productive, potentially enabling Kyiv to break Russia’s land corridor from the east, isolating Crimea and cutting off forces in the west of the country.
But if and when Ukrainian troops succeed in smashing through the first line of defences – which they have not yet achieved – the road ahead will be very long and very bloody. They face mile after mile of obstacles including tank traps, barbed wire and minefields, plus dug-in infantry, pillboxes, machine guns, tanks, artillery fire, combat planes, attack helicopters, drones and missiles.
War is more unpredictable than any other human activity, and no one, not even those directing events in Kyiv or Moscow, can possibly know whether or to what extent Ukraine will succeed. But after spending two precious months trying to shape the battlefield, as the autumn mud approaches, there remains only a matter of weeks before any armoured advance will become bogged down. That means major offensive operations will have to pause at least until the onset of the winter freeze in November and possibly even until next spring.
This is well understood and will be built in to battle plans by both Ukraine and Russia. But there is an even bigger problem to contend with than the capricious General Winter, which can work for either side, and that is the American general election, which will almost certainly work against Kyiv.
Biden will be wishing for this war to end before the election season gets under way in earnest, because he knows that, among much of the U.S. population, war is something to campaign against rather than campaign for. Continued fighting is more likely to lose votes than to win them, especially if things go wrong for Ukraine, for which Biden will be blamed at the ballot box.
There is, of course, another American anxiety; one that is perhaps greater than the fear of drawn-out battle. That is a level of Ukrainian victory that could lead to collapse in the Kremlin and possible fragmentation and chaos across the country with potentially catastrophic geostrategic consequences and untold global economic harm. This immediate vision of doom may or may not be right – but it endures in the back of the minds of White House officials.
It also goes some way to explaining why the U.S. has been generous only up to a point on military aid for Ukraine. Far more could and should have been provided and much more quickly. Instead the administration has supplied just enough to achieve a certain level of success but not sufficient to inflict outright defeat on Putin’s regime.
Expect Washington to push forward peace talks by the autumn, writes Kemp. “The ground has apparently been laid over many months, with some suspecting secret channels between the head of the CIA and his opposite number in Moscow.”

What counter offensive??? from what I can glean this is not much more than a turkey shoot, and the poor Ukrainians are the turkeys.
Wholesale slaughter of a kind not seen since WW1 when thousands of young men were mowed down as soon as they went over the top.
With rates of up to 10/1 Ukrainians KIA as opposed to their Russian enemy, it doesn’t take a genius to see which way this war is going.. to an empty Ukraine..
I don’t see a victory of any sort.. that’s pie in the sky..
Sad but true.
Don’t dare voice such a comment on the Daily Telegraph forum, though.
The entire conflict is viewed through rose tinted (actually blue/yellow ones) there and if you are not rabidly pro Ukrainian then you are a Russian troll. It is spittle flecked bile from start to finish. I have given up, as my latest response to trolling accusations was that I was actually a pensioner from Cheshire, and my comment was removed!
LOL! Haven’t visited the comments for a while..there were a lot of sensible ones on there the other week, when they were talking about the grain deal..maybe a call went out to the 77th that they were letting the side down…??
I too have suffered much animosity..LOL!….but they are so ignorant about the history of anything to do with it, I enjoy trolling them…I just find them appallingly naive and very literally ignorant of any knowledge or facts…they are really sad….
As a pensioner from Yorkshire..maybe I should sign myself off as Olga Ebygum from Yorkshire on the Volga !!? LOL!
Amusingly I got a 3 day ban for saying I just went there to take the p out of them.
Haven’t bought, subscribed or read that rag since it took Bill Gates Danegeld. It’s as rotten to the core as the Tory Party.
Yes, I quit the Telegraph after Philip Johnston wrote his article attacking unvaccinated people after months of saying it was people’s choice. The timing matched extremely similar articles by Andrew Neil in the Mail and Karen Braddy in The Sun. It was the last straw. 77th Brigade was all over the comments and the Gates business disgusted me. I think they renewed the grant too, as Paul Nuki is still pumping out Lord Haw-Haw levels of scare stories.
I wonder who will buy the Telegraph. In an ideal world it would be an American conservative publisher, but I have a horrible feeling it’ll be an ESG-obsessed hedge fund and we’ll find BlackRock, Vanguard and State Street as a controlling 20 per cent institutional stockholder bloc.
There’s a bit of a disconnect between reality and politics.
That was my MPs view last month while the Russian forces were still not being pushed out of Ukraine. Any question on diplomacy is avoided.
Some MPs gathered earlier in the month to show “Solidarity with Ukraine” at a blatantly inappropriate defence-industry sponsored event. This was in association with The Purpose Coalition whose members could no doubt help with a post-destruction rebuild. All enabled by our Parliamentary representatives.

We shouldn’t be surprised…it’s the same sort of disconnect we see with the reality of Covid..and their ‘version’…..the disconnect we see with the reality the green agenda..and their ‘version’….ditto migrants, alphabet people and pretty much everything….
….and if hundreds of thousands die, to support their ‘version’, they don’t seem to care, do they….?
“Ukraine war is a long-term danger”
Worth watching this assessment posted a day or two ago from the excellent John Mearsheimer (warning: it’s an hour long!)

President López Obrador of Mexico remarked last year that the allies’ policy was equivalent to saying “I’ll supply the weapons, and you supply the dead. It is immoral.”
“How easy it is to say, ‘Here, I’ll send you this much money for weapons,” Lopez Obrador said. “Couldn’t the war in Ukraine have been avoided? Of course it could.”

LOL…..!! Coping mechanism or what!! What evidence does Colonel Kemp base his ‘wishful thinking’ on that Ukraine might somehow overpower Russia, and that Russia might fall?? Does he read the news? Biden is way more likely to be incarcerated before anything happens to Putin….maybe he should worry about the upcoming possibility of civil unrest looming there, which is way more likely… I don’t say this as a pro or anti anything..but as an observer reading the same stuff he is….as Ukraine has not even got to the first lines of defence, as he clearly states..why on earth would he extrapolate some sort of Russian collapse from that? It’s patent nonsense…. America hasn’t given planes or long range missiles, not as some sort of kindness to Russia for heaven’s sake, but because it would be a further embarrassment that, like everything else they have given to Ukraine, it would be met and nullified by the exact same thing from the Russian side….…I think it’s really because they are scared of watching the ‘myth’ of Western military superiority collapse in real time and before their very eyes… …is he forgetting they gave illegal and immoral cluster bombs to Ukraine because , in… Read more »
Kemp has been consistently wrong from the outset. If his thinking represents the cream of the British Army, then I am glad our Army is too small to be a serious contender in a real war. It is revealing that the British Challengers aren’t being allowed to the front line because we don’t want the embarrassment of seeing them burn.
….correct…that’s why they are scared of sending the ‘big stuff’…what if Russia destroyed it all, before the eyes of the world?
I don’t know if that would happen, of course, but I bet that IS what REALLY occupies American minds….and what they really are afraid of….
Bearing in mind the amount of munitions we have sent from our already depleted stocks, its not Russia we should fear, but being attacked by the Isle of Man. They will over-run us in days…
…..and we are running out of hotel rooms in which to house them!
Col Kemp like General Dannatt are telling it as their masters wish them to.
The majority of the United States population is sick of giving money to Ukraine. Most of it is being laundered by the corrupt Ukraine government for our corrupt US government.
..Don’t know if everyone saw the Piers Morgan interview with Jackson Hinkle?
…but Piers said what I’ve heard many say..that because Elenskyy is Jewish, he can’t be a gnatzi…?
Does that actually make logical sense? I’m pretty sure you could be..just the same as anyone else…? Or am I missing something fundamental?
You really should do some digging before posting such a naive comment..
Start by listening to George Galloway, on the left he may well be, but stupid and naive he certainly is not
Done plenty of digging already, thanks. And you’re 100% wrong about Galloway.
The irony…
It’s reasonable to note that Ukraine is one of many nations that are somewhat unstable, and has changed it’s continental boundaries over the years. There are quite a few others, such as Belgium, the Alsace part of France, maybe even Italy. Then there are those post-war made up ones that recently split up, some worse than others. Decades ago, I used to work with a Polish guy who’s original place of birth is now in Belarus; he hated anything to do with Russia.
”Far more could and should have been provided”. Ok buddy, you can pay for it. Not me.
I wonder if Zelensky ever considers recent American military history:
Vietnam: cut and ran
Iraq: cut and ran
Afghanistan: cut and ran
Does he really expect Ukraine to be treated any differently?
The Biden Crime Families money laundering scheme has to end sometime. I quit Spiked because they espoused that Basement Biden won the 2019/20 election. Just how stupid do you have to be?
Call me cynical but what are the odds of a peace deal happening, brokered by Biden, in the run up to the elections.
None I would say…Saudi Arabia is holding Peace Talks next month..but Russia isn’t invited!!?
So basically this headline from the Wall Street Journal is telling the truth..as they often do…..
it’s not about peace..at all….it’s STILL about America trying to isolate Russia from any allies….
“Saudi Arabia to host Ukraine Peace Talks As part of Western Effort to woo Global South…..Washington and Europe are hoping the talks-which exclude Russia, can lead to International backing for peace terms favouring Ukraine.”
As an American, most of us are sick of supporting this war. Billions have been laundered through the corrupt Ukrainian government by our own corrupt government. Our politicians on the left block every effort for an ‘accounting’ of where these monies went. NOT ONE MORE PENNY. Time for the rest of you to step up.
