The Fightback Against the Woke Capture of Scottish Schools Begins

This week, the Scottish Union for Education was formed under the banner ‘Education not Indoctrination’. Made up of parents, teachers and lecturers, the Union is for everyone in Scotland who recognises that the Scottish education is in serious trouble. The aim is to promote education – real education. They’ve launched a Substack to allow experts and campaigners to have a voice, and to develop the ideas and activities that will allow ordinary Scots to challenge the indoctrination that is replacing education in their schools and universities.

Scotland’s schools are cascading down the international league tables for educational achievement. One of the reasons appears to be a shift in schools from a focus on education and knowledge to an obsession with the re-education of values.

Describing what you need to be a teacher and headteacher in Scotland, the Standard for Headship document says practically nothing about education as a thing in itself, nothing about the importance of knowledge as most people understand it, and an awful lot about the values you must have to work in a Scottish school today.

In essence, the document describes teaching as a form of social justice warriorship.

Teaching is no longer about the passion for subject knowledge and the ability to pass on this knowledge to the next generation. Rather, it is about ensuring political and emotionally correct values are engineered through our schools.

Teaching is not about developing excellence in education, in historical knowledge, maths, English and so on. It is now about “sustainability”, “inclusion”, “diversity”, understanding “trauma” and “committing to social justice”. Indeed, while the term ‘sustainable’ or ‘sustainability’, including “learning for sustainability” (whatever that means) is mentioned dozens of times, the term ‘excellence’ doesn’t get a single mention.

Teachers now sound like hippy environmentalists who must prioritise “valuing (the) environment”, respecting ecological diversity and “having a deep connection to the natural world”. Indeed, following the line of the anti-enlightened Thomas Malthus who was condemned as an arch reactionary by Karl Marx in the 19th Century, teachers must now have “respect for our natural world and its limited resources”.

Teachers must be therapists, “promoting health and wellbeing” as part of the responsibility of being a “corporate parent” while developing their own “emotional intelligence”. They must ensure a “safe”, “caring” ethos, “enabling” and “empowering” while relating to “protected characteristics” and “intersectionality” and “the influence of gender”.

As one commentator noted, “When it comes to the politicisation of the curriculum, Scotland stands at the forefront of turning education into a form of mass social engineering.” Despite the convoluted language, he notes, these curriculum engineers are essentially promoting a “counter cultural agenda”.

Today, the ideal of a politically neutral education system is being openly trashed based on the fantastical notion that “Scotland’s place in the world, our history, our differences and diversity… and culture (are) based on social justice”.

What is essentially a manifesto for woke warriors is now the basis of our education system. Re-educating the masses in correct social justice values is the new purpose of schooling. Did you vote for this? I know I didn’t.

The teaching document is full of talk about “diversity”, about “challenging discrimination”, about “respect” and “challenging assumptions (and) biases”. But like our censorious cancel culture, there is no respect for different opinions or outlooks within the teaching profession, no recognition of the incredible discrimination and biases of the new elites who now dictate the nature of schooling. They promote the need to be ‘critical’ about all things except themselves and the doctrine they are forcing upon parents and their children.

So what does all this mean for anyone who is not a woke warrior who wants to become a teacher?

Talking to an educational expert, she noted that, if student teachers “don’t subscribe to the particular interpretation of ‘social justice’ that is currently in vogue, then they won’t achieve registration with the GTC (the General Teaching Council)”. This, she added, “is very disturbing”.

Educational standards in Scotland will continue to collapse because the people who run our schools and who are allowed to teach our children are not educators, but social engineers. For the sake of the country and our children, this needs to be challenged.

Stuart Waiton is chairperson of the Scottish Union for Education that was launched on February 2nd 2023. If you’re a concerned Scottish parent, you can contact him at info@scottishunionforeducation.co.uk.

Scotland used to have the best education in the world. In the end everything gets trashed on the altar of far left ideology.

I can just imagine my old Headmaster back in the mid 60s and what his reaction would have been to such gobbledegook.A strict disciplinarian and ex-Army Major. Five sporting colours whilst at Oxford. It’s highly likely he’d have spontaneously combusted!

Yes back then most of the teachers had done something else before becoming a teacher, imparted not only knowledge but life skills as well, we were mentored not mothered.

Yesterday on the Patrick Christys show on GB News an SNP person (Austin Sheridan) was asked if the rapist that was put in a womans prison and only moved to a male one because of outrage was a man or a woman. ——-As usual these people squirm and fidget and he said he was not an expert and tried to avoid answering by saying the Prison Service were dealing with that. Patrick then asked Sheridan if he was a man or a woman. He absurdly replied that he “Identified as a man”. This way of thinking despite being totally absurd to probably 99% of the public is being allowed to dominate common sense everywhere in the western world and is well entrenched in public life, schools etc in Scotland and as someone once correctly pointed out “All it takes for evil to succeed is for good people to remain silent”.

I am glad you could understand what he said. I missed a lot of it as I hadn’t turned on subtitles.
I did however notice that he doesn’t appear to have an off switch.

The Welsh educational system is also set up for social engineering not education. The system is for indoctrination into a single mind set. There is nothing less diverse than a single or closed mind, that is for bigots and the zealots, and it is the bigots and zealots of social engineering and culture irradication that are closing the minds of the children.

“What to think” rather than “How to think”. ———–I am surprised parents tolerate this tyranny and brainwashing of their kids.

Thank goodness for you, Stuart. I hope that someone will start a branch in England. As a tutor, i am very glad I don’t work in schools any more, and would never go back. If a parent asked me to start calling ‘Emma’, ‘Ed’ and use ‘his’/’they’/whatever I’d ask them to find a tutor who’s happy to do that. If I was working in a school, seems I’d get the sack.

We can trump that in Australia.
In addition to the woke, climate catastrophe, gender nonsense, our schools also have to teach all subjects, including science and maths through an Aboriginal prism.
Considering there was no written Aboriginal language or number system, and certainly no “science”, we’re really racing to the bottom down here.

These zealots don’t want bright intelligent outward looking children capable of critical thinking, they want naval gazing hobbled drones obsessed with their own mental health who will carry on spreading the doctrines of their poisonous anti-human ideological cult.

“hobbled drones.”

Exactly. The ability to think for yourself will not be required in the New World Order.

Let’s not forget the war cry of one T. Bliar:

Indoctrination, indoctrination, indoctrination.

(Or something like that 😀)

Thank you Stuart Waiton. The Scottish Union for Education is a much needed development and I wish everybody involved much success. Perhaps they can show the rest of the British Isles the way forward. Branches in England, Wales and Northern Ireland would be a sure sign of progress.

Good luck.

Don’t politicians and better off people send their children to private schools where they are not obliged to spew out “sustainability”, “inclusion”, “diversity”, understanding “trauma” and “committing to social justice” ?
Those who don’t agree with their kids being brainwashed and who are able to express their displeasure verbally and in writing may like to make their child’s school head teachers life a misery by constant complaining and writing to the local papers. Writing to your Uni-Party MP is a waste of time.

Is ‘Real Education’ just about whipping knowledge into children? Surely there’s a place for both values and knowledge plus much else besides. As children mature, critical thinking is important, and why not even philosophical scepticism ( ref one of Scotlands finest, David Hume). I’m weary of reading binary opinions eg that all modern educational initiatives are bad, the old ways were all good.
