We Lost Our Cafe and Got Fined £42,000 Because We Refused to Comply With Covid Restrictions. Can You Help?
For the past two years, my husband Michael and I have been fighting an exhausting and financially devastating legal battle after we kept our small coffee shop open for a time during the 2020 lockdown.
We were subjected to a prolonged campaign of harassment and defamation after an anonymous complaint to Plymouth’s Environmental Health Department about staff in our café not wearing facemasks. We were also accused of not enforcing lockdown rules on customers entering our shop.
We thought the matter was resolved when we pointed out to visiting Environmental Health Officers that legitimate exemptions applied, and that if we had challenged staff or customers about not wearing masks we could have faced fines under the Equality Act 2010.
Michael and I thought that was the end of the matter until our local paper, PlymouthLive, became involved, and news reporters gathered on the pavement outside our café and began to interrogate passers-by.
When in November 2020 the Government announced that food and drink outlets would be restricted to takeaway service only, the police started to make threatening appearances in our coffee shop.
After a great deal of thought, we made the decision not to withdraw table service to our customers, some of whom were vulnerable and elderly.
PlymouthLive’s comments’ section condemned the stance we had taken, stating that we should have followed the rules “like everyone else”. But we also received support from people who felt we were standing up for common sense.
We sought legal help throughout this ordeal, including a lawyer who came over from Ireland to speak on our behalf. We were consistently advised that we hadn’t broken any laws – that staff exemptions for facemasks were legitimate, and there was no requirement in law for us to remove tables and chairs from our coffee shop in November 2020.
Indeed, as we now know, former Health Secretary Matt Hancock revealed in autumn 2022 (on I’m a Celebrity…) that there was never any enforceable coronavirus ‘law’, only ‘guidelines’.
We are also now aware that other business owners who were issued fines under the same ‘legislation’ have had them overturned on appeal.
Despite all this, Michael and I are being threatened with prison if we don’t pay the fines that remain outstanding. I believe that the local authorities decided to make some kind of example of us, encouraged by the local press.
To us, the message seemed clear: “We are the authority and you must abide by our rules and regulations (even though we don’t always abide by them ourselves…)”
Because we followed our consciences, we have endured two years of legal wrangling, court appearances, threats, and negative articles in the local press – including insults from angry members of the public urging others to smash our shop windows.
So how did it all start?
Early in 2020 we read Freedom of Information requests to Public Health England and other information in the public domain that we found deeply disturbing and which led us to question what the Government was saying.
Ultimately, at Magistrates’ Court, our limited company (Finla), my husband, Michael, and I were collectively fined £30,000 plus £12,000 costs. Sadly for us, in April 2022 we were forced to close our business of six years.
On appeal, after we’d already paid the lion’s share of the costs, our personal fines were reduced to £10,000 plus costs, totalling just over £14,000.
We now only have a few months to pay the outstanding fines before we face the judiciary again in March 2023 to hear whether we will be taken into custody for “non-payment of fines”.
It certainly feels as if the odds have been stacked against us from the start.
I know ours is just one of many tales of hardship in the last couple of years.
I feel many – hopefully most – people are beginning to understand the toll on people’s health caused by the lockdowns. But we feel people would be equally shocked to learn of the treatment meted out to us by the authorities, and the way in which we have lost our small family business.
If you feel able to help, we would be most grateful for any financial contribution, however small. We have set up a crowdfunder here.
At this stage, we are losing hope…. We would love to get back on track with our lives with our two young children.
Please help if you can – and thank you for taking the time to read our story.

Profanity and abuse will be removed and may lead to a permanent ban.
Gave quid. This is astonishing. As the article says it was an ‘anonymous’ whine that sent off the useless plod to their cafe to enforce the illegal ‘rules’. The comments section in the useless local fake news rag roundly condemned them for not following the rules and mandating diaper rags on ugly faces. Doris and his corruptocrats were fined £50. These people lost their business, their livelihood, their private investment – all due to the fascism that Rona unleashed and proving yet again that 80% of the people around you are just a goose step away from supporting the end of your freedom. What Rona taught me is that I am surrounded by fascistic morons and useless institutions like the police and National Death Service.
The comments section on Plymouth Live is full of scumbags. The abuse you get for even minor comments is shocking. It’s an ill-moderated shambles, similar to the papers Plymouth Live is part of. It was probably a Plymouth Live journalist who tipped off the police to generate a story. The number of people who bought into the COVID-19 lies staggers me. I feel like I’m a pretty isolated voice in Plymouth for attacking the obscene abuses of our rights.
I’m tempted to share this appeal on Plymouth Live facebook page, but it might backfire on the couple whom I presume still live locally. Any advice?
My deepest sympathies go to you and your husband.
In Australia protesters were bashed, thrown to the ground, hit with rubber bullets, and pregnant mothers handcuffed in their own homes for Facebook posts, with multiple businesses bankrupted and workers in all fields sacked when unwilling to risk death or disability by taking repeated jabs.
My anger towards the perpetrators of this evil only just eclipses my anger towards the masses that just didn’t care or didn’t want to know, and largely cheered on the abuses.
You are heroes. Have a few quid. Wish I could give more.
It won’t often feel like this, I am sure, but your kids are amongst the luckiest kids on earth.
Godspeed.
These ppl stood up when we needed ppl to stand up, please donate.
We’ve been conditioned to believe that we live in a free democratic society because every 4 years we celebrate the ritual of choosing between Team A or Team B.
This story and others like it show we don’t remotely live in a free society. We live in a place where the state can capriciously decide that going to a cafe is dangerous and illegal but having Amazon and food delivery people roaming free delivering stuff to your doorstep, that’s fine, not dangerous at all.
It’s mad. Really, really mad.
I know it doesn’t feel like it at the moment but what you are going through now will make you and your children into the people you will become. Tragedies and hardships in life is what make us more resilient to it!
As the the old saying goes, “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger!”
Oh and the other saying “the only way out is through!”
I truly wish you all the best in your struggle against all this madness and that those responsible for your losses will one day be made to reimburse you.
(sent a few quid and if we can all send a few it’s got to help, please send them what you can)
“If you’re going through Hell, keep going!”
This is just awful. One of the things that infuriated me from the start of the Covid response was the utter disregard for people running small and medium sized businesses. I know that people put their heart and soul into them and to take them away is a horrible crime. I’ve supported you and I hope many others do so too. I really appreciate your courage in standing up to tyranny.
Donated a small amount. Try and keep your chins up!
Don’t know, I might be in the minority here but I hate the stasi style sneaks, the Jeremy Vine types, the bed wetting safetyists who reported you, made comments in the local rag etc and thus destroyed your livelihood AS MUCH as I hate the faceless politicians.
Without their moral cowardice, virtue signalling and general stupidity TPTB would get no place with their plans.
Good luck for the future.
You are in the majority here. Not just here either. Look at comments in the Daily Mail (though don’t bother reading its lame excuse for journalism), and you’ll see the majority of those commenting now take a similar view to us.
Recommend that you make the default currency on your fundraising page sterling, not dollars.
I’m sorry its came to this for you both. I hope you find strength from these challenges and I live on hope that your money will be returned and the fines found to be unlawful.
I bought a coffee and donught remotely from you cafe during the lockdown as I was so inspired by your positive action. You gave me strength then and I hope you find yours now. Thank you.
Happy to contribute. Thank you for standing up to the covid tyranny and madness

An absolutely tragic story of good versus unrelenting evil.
If ever the authorities condemned themselves by their actions and inactions it is stories such as this.
Local authorities guilty for pursuing this even when the evidence of crimes against humanity is now irrefutable and national governments doing nothing. Not like them, unless it hurts somebody of course.
God bless you brave people.
Donation made.
well said
Thank you.
Great news. I’ve just checked the crowdfunder website and they’ve passed their target – it’s now nearly £20,000 and still rising. Thank you Toby for highlighting the family’s plight.
I get the feeling the covid cult is getting a little defensive these days. Good. Let’s keep pushing the truth.
Just tried to donate, the only option was via PayPal.
“The merchant account is restricted”.
The scum are at it again.
Please advise alternative means of donating.
Right, followed the non-obvious link and used debit card.
But PayPal are at it again. Toby?
There is a button called “More options” underneath the paypal logo. You have to click it and fill in your name and email before it goes to the payment card details page
“We are all capable of believing things which we know to be untrue, and then, when we are finally proved wrong, impudently twisting the facts so as to show that we were right. Intellectually, it is possible to carry on this process for an indefinite time: the only check on it is that sooner or later a false belief bumps up against solid reality, usually on a battlefield” – G. Orwell
There is a case here for suing on several points. To deliberately drive a people out of business using threats and abuse and well as defamation is a collection of terrible crimes.
Sadly, ‘journalists’ making a complaint in order to create a story is extremely common, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Plymouth Live/Plymouth Herald started this. Video blogger Dave Cullen saw one of his videos taken down on YouTube during the scamdemic. He was contacted by a ‘journalist’ working for a publishing magazine and asked for a quote about it. On investigating the complaint that caused his video to be taken down, Cullen discovered that the ‘journalist’ had made the complaint as part of writing a hit piece on him. In the case of this couple, I hope it works out for them. History will prove them to be right. They’re heroes. The local council and the police of Plymouth are degenerate fascist scum. Having lived here on and off for 48 years, watching the ‘uniparty’ that controls the city, with the same old bunch of faces that have been in power since the 1980s, nothing changes. People get fed up of the Tories and a the same Labour people come back. People get fed up of Labour, the same Tory councillors return. All are puffed-up incompetents. All are evil. If I had the money, I’d clear this couple’s debt and… Read more »
It’s heartwarming to see that after a day of their donorbox, they already have over half of their target.
Although I don’t hold out any hope of the message being sent to the cretins who have done this, I am happy that these good folks will be able to start the process of putting this period behind them and I am sure they will do more good things. They have the spirit and the soul, something which their – our – enemies wouldn’t recognise if it hit them in the face!
Well said. I’ve shown support – and not via PayPal either!
Just had a ‘virtual’ coffee with you…good luck,
… if we all had a ‘virtual’ coffee …. who knows !!
Don’t let the bastards grind you down!
Or for those who prefer some cod Latin: “Illegitimi non carborundum”
I’m having trouble donating to this. Nothing happens when I press the final ‘donate’ button. Anyone else?
No problems when I donated just now. Used credit card, NOT PayEnemy
Thanks, I managed it eventually.
It could be the “prove you’re human” thing. Some browsers have trouble, try a different one.
Or maybe there are so many donations that we’ve crashed donorbox 😃
Thanks, eventually succeeded.
Is there some sort of troll on this forum as I keep seeing one -1 on every comment? Anyhow I digress.
It’s absolutely shameful the owners got prosecuted and prosecuted. The local judge was a wet rag in not actually doing his job in distinguishing between what is lawful or not.
Happy to say our local cafe won the award of being the most reported establishment in our borough! And they didn’t give a monkey’s! It’s good to have those around who are not afraid to show they are against The Narrative. But shame on those that collaborated with the fascists.
Very sorry to read about your situation and have sent a donation.
Possibly the worst aspect of this is the fact that people can be prosecuted on the basis of an anonymous complaint which has to be vindictive and thus subjective. I know that our justice system became even more corrupted during the Covid hysteria but this takes the biscuit. If we allow any bottom dwelling pond life to control the legal process like this then the law is truly an ass. But there again, it’s hardly a surprise that the parasites in local government and the police “service” are so quick to virtue signal their excessive compliance with the “guidance”. Surely, there must be a legal team willing to support this business on a pro-bono basis against this abuse?
Just checked the crowdfunder site. They’ve reached £18799 with a goal of £17000.
I’ve been rather addicted to checking their progress! Hope it runs and runs and runs and runs and makes headline news. It’s events like these that have the power to part the oceans…
Thanks, that’s really good news, and great for the cafe owners to know they have many supporters.
Now over £21,000!
I don’t what is going on but my donation keeps getting rejected?
What a brave family. As you say in your fundme site, you are doing this for all of us.
Thank you once again.
