Psychology Goes into Meltdown Over ‘Racism’ Accusations
The latest episode of academic cancel culture unfolded last week, culminating in the forced-resignation of a respected psychologist.
It all began when a team of academics led by Steven Roberts published in an article in the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science. (Roberts happens to be black, a fact I mention because it’s relevant to the story.) The article claimed that “systemic inequality exists within psychological research” and that “systemic changes are needed to ensure that psychological research benefits from diversity” – the usual woke shtick, in other words.
Another psychologist wrote a response, which took issue with what Roberts and his colleagues had argued. As is perfectly normal, the editor of Perspectives on Psychological Science, Klaus Fiedler, solicited critical commentaries on the response written by other scholars. One of the scholars he invited to comment was Lee Jussim, an expert on stereotype accuracy.
In his commentary, Jussim made the point that when the woke talk about ‘diversity’, they generally ignore all forms of diversity other than race, gender and sexual orientation. They promise one thing, and then deliver something else.
He illustrated this point with a quote from Fiddler on the Roof: “Of course, there was the time he sold him a horse, and delivered a mule.” Here, the horse is what most people understand by ‘diversity’, while the mule is what the woke mean by that term.
Roberts was then given an opportunity to comment on the entire exchange – the response to his original paper, as well as the critical commentaries. He did so, but in his own response accused Jussim of equating “people of color with mules”, which he claimed is “a well-documented racist trope”. Jussim obviously did no such thing.
Fiedler, the journal’s editor, advised Roberts to remove the section where he levelled this accusation (given that it was so obviously ridiculous).
At that point, Roberts reportedly pulled his response, and uploaded it on a preprint site instead. In the version he uploaded, he accused his critics of “racism” (naturally) and posted private email correspondence without Fiedler’s consent – a move the latter described as “unprofessional and unprecedented”.
Roberts’ response went viral, gathering 50,000 views in just a few days. This prompted an open letter calling for Fiedler’s resignation, which was signed by more than 1,300 academics. Here’s what it says:

As you can see, it also demands woke re-education – excuse me, “remedial training” – for people that weren’t even involved (i.e., “all editors” of APS journals). And notice how petty the final demand is: the petitioners want the articles that criticised Roberts to be available “only as supplementary online material”.
Unfortunately, the open letter succeeded – Fiedler resigned (after being told that he’d be fired if he didn’t).
One silver lining is that a smaller group of psychologists organised a counter-letter in support of due process. Though it was too little, too late; and in my opinion they were far too lenient on the original petitioners (e.g., acknowledging that their motives were “benevolent”).
When it comes to woke activism in academia, you might say ‘it’s just a few bad apples’. But 1,300 academics is more than just a few. This problem isn’t going away any time soon.

Profanity and abuse will be removed and may lead to a permanent ban.
One thing that’s plainly obvious from the letter is that whoever wrote or signed it was emotionally completely disengaged from the claimed racist abuse. This reads like a preformulated document making a covert salespitch for an unnamed consultancy company selling EDI training and monitoring services someone planned to pull out of his electronic pocket as soon as an opportunity for that arose. The trick with misinterpreting figurative language, especially if it’s also a well-known quote, as seriously crude, on-the-spot invented (by the person doing the misinterpretation) racist trope despite this doesn’t make the least bit of sense (the statement refers to a particular policy and not to people) is also not a credible pretext for people who are presumably experts in psychology.
If I was the editor of this journal, I’d watch out for pirate ships looking for something to raid.
As in “Pirate ships would lower their flags when Puff roared out his name”?
As in Aggressive Parasites.
Black people who are ‘woke’ are alot like the C1984 – potentially dangerous if they find weakened defences and deadly if you can’t fight back with perfectly reasonable and effective treatments, or those treatments are withheld from you.
Black, woke people, always eager to play the race card and in fact never leave home without it – think Abbacus Abbott.
And more recently the person with Caribbean heritage dressed up in African fancy dress.
Correct.
Where there’s blame there’s a claim….
Just more guff from the victim card holders.
Off topic, so apologies, but thought I’d share the latest beauty from the UKHSA. Yep, it’s genuine. https://fb.watch/hj4LEf80gT/ (Santa gets boosted)
They’re completely oblivious that they’re openly treating adults like children… mind you, after the last couple of years they’ve got a point I suppose!
Starring well-known COVID nutcase Dr Hillary as The Vaccinator! 🙂 🙂
OTOH, they seem to be catching up with reality, albeit slowly: Only The Vaccinator is wearing a mask. And they’re all shaking hands on entry. In 2020, we were assured that particular gesture would be gone forever and for good (I’ve since made a point of always doing that when I meet one of my few closer acquaintances).
There’s going to be a lot of disappointed children this Christmas. Now, what was that thud on the roof?
Has any Bantu ever expressed regret for the almost complete genocide of the pygmies and San that they’ve been engaged in for the past 2,000 years?
I mean, we Europeans have never done anything remotely comparable, mass deaths in the Americas being overwhelmingly due to the introduction of Old World diseases, which was bound to happen at some point.
And let’s not even think about the millions murdered by the Mongols.
One has to understand this as what it is: Just another case of US domestic politics played out on a global scale because all of the so-called west is more or less culturally dominated by the USA. In America, this is about winning the black(/ hispanic) vote and one of the parties considers all these gross theories and equally gross attempts at putting them into practice helpful for that. The same strategy seems principally useful in all countries with large ethnic minorities with voting rights (eg, the UK) or where large ethnic minorities which could be granted voting rights (eg, Germany) exist.
To highligh the completely idocy of this, it’s sufficient to point out that people of Spanish descent are considered ethnically ok in the USA despite their ancesters were doubtlessly European and murdered so-called native Americans on a grand scale by widely employing them for slave labour in the former Spanish colonies in Middle and South America.
Both The Daily Sceptic and GB News have greatly benefitted my mental health over the last year and a half. And also, The High Wire.
I can’t imagine what it would have been like without them.
Can you imagine?
An excellent comment.
Thank you, though I posted it under the wrong article, I meant to post it under the ‘London Calling’ article!
It is still more than applicable.
Coincidentally, yes!
Wow, that’s a new low in academic persecution, isn’t it? That’s 1300 psychologists who need to go and sit on the naughty step until they realise the harm they’ve caused by their narrow-minded, un-inclusive and manipulative diversity tantrum.
I think it’s quite likely that’s 1,300 psychologists terrified they’d lose their jobs if they didn’t sign the letter
How can anyone take seriously an organisation (The Association for Psychological Science) with the following gobbledygook on their website?
“building an inclusive, connected, and meaningful global science”
All of the adjectives are redundant.
but it is at least a clear warning to anyone with a brain cell that this outfit has been captured by the wokerati
It’s very hurtful of you to pick on us adjectives just because we’re out of a job 😮💨
Psychological science is already a contradictio in adiecto. As such things invariably wear off over time, more words need to be added to conceal that.
I suspect the whole thing may have been a setup from the start. Roberts writes the paper precisely in order to flush out the “racists” – once in the open target them with absurd “mule” accusation and recruit 1,300 useful idiots to terrify the publishers into sacking the “guilty” parties. Job done. You have to admire their efficiency.
Actually “Diversity” only means one thing ———-Less white people
