How the EU Killed Elon Musk’s Twitter Amnesty

Elon Musk’s announced “general amnesty” week has come and gone and there has been no sign of any amnesty at all. In particular, none of the – on Twitter’s own count – 11,230 accounts that have been suspended for violating the platform’s “COVID-19 misinformation” policy appear to have been restored.

Many have been wondering why the announced ‘amnesty’ has not occurred. But the answer is obvious. The European Union vetoed it.

“The people have spoken. Amnesty begins next week. Vox Populi, Vox Dei,” Musk famously tweeted after an online poll he had posted resulted in a landslide in favor of ‘amnesty’. But the European Commission evidently believes in a different God.

Thus, on November 30th, just two days after the amnesty was supposed to have gotten underway, the EU’s Internal Market Commissioner, Thierry Breton, posted an eerie five-second clip on Twitter, showing a grim, stone-faced Musk on a video monitor being lectured by Breton, who is himself comfortably seated in a Brussels office on the backdrop of the EU flag.

We cannot hear what Breton is telling Musk, since the clip has been posted without audio. The video conference appears to have taken place earlier on the same day.

The accompanying tweet reads: “I welcome @elonmusk‘s intent to get Twitter 2.0 ready for the #DSA Huge work ahead still – as Twitter will have to implement transparent user policies, significantly reinforce content moderation and tackle disinformation. Looking forward to seeing progress in all these areas.”

The “DSA” is the EU’s recently adopted Digital Services Act. As discussed in my earlier article here, the DSA threatens “very large” online platforms like Twitter with ruinous fines of up to 6% of global turnover if they fail to comply with what the European Commission construes as their obligations under the EU’s so-called Code of Practice on Disinformation. The main focus of the ‘Code’ for the last two-plus years has been a “Fighting COVID-19 Disinformation Monitoring Programme”, which was instituted under it.

For further details on what exactly the EU Commission is demanding of Musk and Twitter to demonstrate compliance, Breton coyly links to a Mastodon thread containing a “DSA Checklist.” Item no. 3 (see below) amounts to a not-so-subtle reprimand of Musk for having proposed a general amnesty and, in particular, for having done so on the basis of the ‘Vox Populi, Vox Dei‘ principle. It calls merely for “appeal procedures for banned accounts” – i.e. no ‘amnesty’, whether general or partial – and insists: “Content policies have to be applied consistently and based on objective criteria (e.g. not via a poll).”

Item no. 1 demands that Musk and Twitter “reinforce content moderation” – a.k.a. censorship – and somehow, in the manner of squaring the circle, “protect freedom of speech” at the same time. Note that Breton’s tweet and the introductory post to his Mastodon thread both indeed call on Musk to “significantly reinforce content moderation”, thus making clear that the Commission not only disapproves of the prospect of banned accounts being restored, but also of the relatively more laissez-faire attitude that Musk has thus far adopted toward current users.

But perhaps most tellingly, Breton’s introductory post notes his satisfaction at hearing that Musk “has read [the Digital Services Act] carefully” – highly unlikely given the length and complexity of the legislation – “and considers it as a sensible approach to implement on a worldwide basis”. The emphasis is mine.

This is to say that the EU’s censorship requirements are to be applied not only within the EU itself, but globally. As discussed in my previous article, unbeknownst to most of the rest of the world, this is in fact what is happening, including in the United States, where any such legally-required abridgment of freedom of speech is obviously incompatible not only with the spirit, but also with the letter of the First Amendment.

Breton’s complete set of demands can be read here.

Is this Musk saying one thing while doing another? Until and unless those accounts are restored, my assumption will be that Musk is happy to comply with EU censorship and that was always his intention.

If I were Musk i would tell the EU to go fk themselves and close all accounts in the EU. The DCMS only applies to companies that have more than a certain number of EU users. We would see who backs down first…

Musk isn’t dumb. I expect he is thinking of ways to put pressure on the EU. In other areas where commentators were saying he had folded, he came up with the goods. He is rather good at it.

Just last week when it seemed Apple held all the cards, Musk organised a response that completely reversed the pressure on them, pointing out their censorship in China and enjoining Ron DeSantis to make clear woke censorship is not acceptable. The idea they could be attracting the ire of a future president and the Censorship news definitely brought about a change of attitude.

I’ve no idea what response he will make, but one possible example is he could blank out Tweets that do not meet EU content moderation requirements. Then EU users would be faced with a wall of censorship Twitter user’s elsewhere in the world are not subject to. EU users would fee extremely aggrieved, but their anger would not be directed at Musk.

Ah, the fabulous EU, all bark and no bite. The unelected political has-beens in Brussels really believe their own press. There is no Europe – it is only held together by the generous transfers of money stolen from the “richer” countries to the poorer countries. The “richer” countries are currently being bled dry and destroyed – whatever military power the EU possessed as opposed to rented from the US, is all but gone – having donated most of their own weapons and tanks to Ukraine, they have no way of defending themselves and are fools if they think the US will do anything other than act in its own interests, which currently are primarily only the interests of the corrupt Democrat party – the current US government is not even acting in the interests of the US. Thanks to the EU’s increasingly unhinged ‘green’ fanaticism, the so-called financial powerhouses of Europe will be circling the drain – add to this the amounts of money they are on the hook for through Target2 and the debts accrued due to the ridiculous corona policies, it won’t take much for any financial power the EU had to dissipate. At that point, many poorer… Read more »

I appreciate your views on Europe Jane but I do not believe the destruction is based on hubris or stupidity. The destruction of Western economies is a deliberate part of the reset and the political has beens running things don’t care how the destruction is wrecked. Fundamental to the reset is population control and destruction so however they can facilitate those aspects is considered ‘good.’

If the populations have to starve to achieve reductions then the Dutch farmers will see their farms stolen from them. A start on nonsense nitrogen reductions has already kicked-off in Germany so who is next? The UK?

The UK economy will be destroyed within twelve months as businesses simply will not survive the increase in energy prices and the government are going to be vicious with this. Millions will lose jobs and homes, and the health service is finished. No money for heating or proper food makes for a poorly population and medical assistance a memory unless its a dodgy pill or a killer injection.

The EU ‘authorities’ are simply acting under orders.

Western collapse is a matter of time only.

Some people may be acting with intent, just as they were with the corona nonsense and the poisoning.

Unfortunately there is an extraordinary, never-ending supply of useful idiots at all levels of society, but particularly in public authorities and among ‘experts’ who believe all this garbage and do not see they are being manipulated, but truly believe they are doing good.

Remember when I said I believed that most people in health care probably actually believed the vaxx was good, you agreed – even though they better than anyone were in a position to know and see that it was poison.

Those with evil intent aren’t the problem, it’s the useful idiots and their smug belief in their own superiority that are the problem.

And why exactly would you assume that these “useful idiots” are mere naive fools who believe the hype? That’s letting them off the hook massively, in my opinion. What these people suffer, at best, is denialism but that certainly does not equate to innocence. You give them a get out clause by assuming they are ignorant when these people are privy to ALL the classified information that we are not, and yet we mere regular folk can access one hell of a lot independently. Of course your ”useful idiots” know exactly what is going on. Stop giving the guilty excuses and painting them as hapless idiots. Nobody that falls under the umbrella of ‘TPTB’ got to where they are by being idiots. They are shrewd, lack scruples and are sociopathic, but they most definitely are not ”idiots”.

How people do love to read their own interpretation into things.

At no point do I suggest anyone is innocent, that they are ‘hapless’ or that they should be let off the hook. Nor was I referring to TPTB, I am referring to the large apparatus surrounding them, from thick MPs who show up to vote as they are told to vote and by and large can’t be bothered to actually inform themselves about the issue, to civil service and regulatory agencies to simple-minded people who vote for political parties who do not even pretend to be representing us anymore.

My point was that they convince themselves that what they do is right and they genuinely believe it, that is what makes them so dangerous. Considering I say it is they who are the real problem, that should have made it clear that I hold them responsible. But reproaching them with terms like evil and intent will get nowhere, that just makes them believe even more in their infallibility and that they are fighting conspiracy loons.

Well in the absence of some textbook definition, by using the term ‘TPTB’, that would involve any authority figure, therefore it includes your “thick MPs”, at least that’s my interpretation of the term. I feel you give them too much benefit of the doubt and you actually have no clue as to the extent of what they do or do not know. None of us do, but certainly I’d err on the side of caution and presume that ALL have access to the same information, from the PM downwards. You seem to be going out on a limb to assess them, e,g “they convince themselves that what they do is right and they genuinely believe it..” but how do you know? Are you personally in touch with MPs or their advisors? I’m inclined to tar them all with the same brush and label them as guilty until proven innocent. At least by this stage of the game, authority figures of all levels have no excuse not to have informed themselves by now. Same goes for medical/healthcare personnel of course.

This viewpoint is very much off. The EU is still a confederation of states and not a federal state and it still doesn’t have a government of its own, only an executive working on behalt of the governing council (composed of members of the governments of the member states). Something like the DSA exists because said governments, presumably led by the German and French governments, the former being little but a bunch of stooges acting on behalf of the so-called American left in all but the name, wanted it. This means this comes full-circle: The EU is implementing legislation the current US government would want to implement itself if it only could.

It’s important to know who your enemies really are in order to fight them effectively.

Having just signed up for Twitter by way of a vote of confidence in Musk’s ownership/ leadership, I would very much prefer that he simply closed all EU based accounts. I shall Tweet him. That would probably include mine as I have a French phone and live in Greece, although a British passport holder. Tant pis.

i suspect he may just be playing for time – he cannot fight on several fronts at once. So for now he says the DSA is a great idea, until he has fixed the currently broken Twitter engine. 🤞

Can Musk not just close any/all eu offices, remove presence from eu, tell thme to FOAD and then sell VPN access so that people in the evil empire simply log in as if they were in the US?
Don’t use twatter so DGAF, but there probably is a relatively straightforward workaround?

Apologies for being off-topic but this is breaking news from New Zealand. Further to the case about baby Will who is in urgent need of a heart operation and his parents want him to receive only unvaxxed blood, the court has decided against the family’s wishes and have taken custody of the baby;

“Health authorities had rejected the parents’ request for unvaccinated blood, arguing it was impractical and unnecessary.
The family claims to have dozens of non-vaccinated donors lined up.
New Zealand’s blood service does not make a distinction between donations from those vaccinated or unvaccinated against COVID, as there is no extra risk from using vaccinated blood.”

This flies in the face of all the available evidence demonstrating known and potential harms of mRNA to young babies, as per the New Zealand doctors article.*

Agreed. What an absolutely horrible situation to be in as a parent. What happened to the precautionary principle? Of course the psychos running the show and their minions still adhere to the tired old, proven a million times to be false “safe and effective” slogan, so they must therefore maintain that the blood supply is also safe and untainted. They can’t be seen to be contradicting themselves or causing mass alarm in the public. But Dr Ryan Cole has found these big clots in unvaxxed, blood transfused deceased, and as we know, absence of evidence does not mean evidence of absence. If they aren’t bothering to investigate the donated blood of the vaxxed how will they ever be able to say it’s truly safe? And this;

“Sacred Heart Hospital in Washington State has erased all records of the death of baby Alex who died from a blood clot after receiving a transfusion from a vaccinated patient.
So there is no evidence of a problem anymore. They erased it, just like the CDC erased all data linking vaccines and autism. This is how science works nowadays”.

Incredible that all these new rules are only required now, not in the past or to other platforms. This is proof that the other platforms and Twitter previously were with the program. World

This just demonstrates another reason why the EU is so despicable in addition to its lack of democracy and many other issues.
