Why I’m Reluctantly Standing Up For a Pro-Putin Apologist
In my latest Spectator column I’ve written about Graham Phillips, the video blogger based in Donbas who‘s been sanctioned by the British Government. I think he‘s an unsavoury character and may be guilty of breaching the Geneva Conventions by interviewing prisoners-of-war for propaganda purposes. Nevertheless, for the U.K. Government to punish him without trial because he’s sided with the enemy of one of our allies is wrong.
According to the Foreign Office, the reason for sanctioning Phillips isn’t because he’s guilty of a crime, but because he “has produced and published media content that supports and promotes actions and policies which destabilise Ukraine and undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty, or independence of Ukraine”. That may be true, but why is that a reason to punish him without trial? If Britain was at war with Russia, that would be one thing – some civil liberties need to be suspended during wartime. But we are not.
The problem with this rationale is that it could easily be applied to another video-blogger who is a thorn in the side of one of our allies – Saudi Arabia, for instance – making it a sinister precedent. Indeed, had Corbyn won the last general election and frozen the assets of a dubious journalist taking sides against a communist country he had declared an ally, such as Cuba, we’d be justifiably outraged.
I think those of us who care about free speech need to hold our noses and condemn this decision. If the government thinks Phillips is guilty of a crime, then it should issue an international arrest warrant and bring him to justice. But until he has been convicted in court, he should not be penalised by the state. To punish him without due process is a breach of one of the most sacrosanct principles of English common law, as set out in Magna Carta. If we don’t challenge this decision, unappealing though Phillips may be, any one of us could be next.

Profanity and abuse will be removed and may lead to a permanent ban.
The accusation looks like a definition of legal but harmful, ie, something the government would really like to get rid of despite it isn’t prohibited by any law. And that’s something which must not happen if rule of law is supposed to mean anything. It certainly doesn’t to this government.
I’m trying to find evidence of his unsavoury character.
I couldn’t find anything.
I did find this video from 2019 covering the large neo nazi marches: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01UjW_ogmLw
Its good to support free speech. But frankly this country no longer works by the principles of law that we thought protected the individual from corrupt state authority. RT was banned ffs. You need a VPN to watch it. China would be proud.
Britain has fallen. The media is in cahoots with the globalist interests which demand strict control of the narratives, and that includes the myth that Ukraine and the NATO powers are innocent parties in this conflict.
A lot would be gained in this respect already if people wouldn’t constantly try to assume the power of God to judge the souls of men. There are no innocents in a war, only belligerents.
No VPN needed.
Just use/google YANDEX.
You can hear Putin’s latest speeches etc.
Propaganda maybe, but no worse than the utterances from those on the side of “The Great Satan”.
rt.com just returns an invalid address error. I suspect the ISPs in the UK have blocked it.
i’ve watched some of his videos and thought they were good and told stories that are not covered by our mainstream media, however, i watched the first minute or so of his Aiden Aslin (?) interview and i didn’t like it at all as he acted like a prosecutor!
he’s also very critical and disparaging about Patrick Lancaster (another Ukraine vlogger) and so i’ve just about stopped watching his vids.
Funny how anyone who gives the Russian perspective on the Ukraine is always a “pro-Putin apologist”. Perhaps we should start labelling all the MSM journalists “pro-Nazi apologists”.
Why is producing literature that doesn’t side with Ukraine a sanctionable act? Where does such ludicrous nonsense eventually take us? No reason to hold your nose when defending free speech.
Wow..I think it’s decidedly sad when anyone who is pro-Putin has to apologise for anything..it’s absolutely barmy….is anybody apologising because our ‘allies’ include Israel, and Saudi Arabia? To name just two of the unsavoury characters we do business with!,,,,? In the past I have been a supporter of Israel, in general, but for goodness sake that doesn’t make me blind to what is happening in Gaza right now..which even I am finding hard to defend…similarly what is Putin doing that is so different to what Saudi is doing in Yemen? or what the UK and the USA did in Afghanistan and Iran…or what the USA is doingg inSyria, or did in Libya?…..bugger all as far as I can see… Is it just the fact they’ve had the guts to put ‘boots on the ground’ because they believe in what they are doing? It’s utterly bonkers that a man, reporting things in another country, with whom we are not at war, is being sanctioned in the UK…just because they don’t like it…sorry Toby, but you don’t need to make a pathetic excuse to defend him, in doing so you make ‘them’ seem as though they have a case…they absolutely don’t…it’s wrong… Read more »
Great post
Indeed it is.
Well said! I totally agree, ebygum. Toby – you sound like Peter Hitchens who said almost exactly the same thing. These are weasel words – defending someone or something while putting the boot in by inference at the same time. Can you give examples of his unsavoury character? Does he leave the loo seat up, perchance? Do you know him personally? Have you met him, talked with him? I doubt it. There are a lot of ‘may and might haves’ about this charge of interviewing prisoners of war – do we know the context or anything other than rumour? Remember that truth is the first casualty in war. The elephant in the room is the concerted effort to prop up a dodgy regime that is ruining not only the lives of ordinary Ukrainian citizens but also the citizens of the countries that are doing the propping up. We are cutting off our noses to spite our face. I doubt very much that Ukraine will ever return to a functioning democracy. Whatever is really happening there is not clear but with no end in sight and the Ukrainian army shelling a nuclear power station ffs, we can imagine that it is… Read more »
…yes, as an aside! I am wondering how they are going to spin Ukraine blowing up a nuclear power station, with weapons supplied by the West….
I mean it will be Putin’s fault, naturally, but it will take their very best twisted logic efforts won’t it?
Why is he ‘unsavoury’, Toby? He is only doing his job as a journalist. The BBC’s Media Action is busy training up journalists in Ukraine to spew forth their propaganda, so why can’t we get to hear from this man? What is wrong with his having interviewed the prisoner of war, who, I believe, wanted to do the interview?
Agreed….it’s laughable that anyone who lives in the UK and deals with the daily propaganda we have as supposed news can even make the point…pot and kettle spring to mind….

Absolutely. I would like to know where this charge of ‘unsavoury’ and rumours of his questionable methods come from….oh…the msm! Now there’s a surprise.
Great post, Toby.
It would be interesting to see similar treatment of all those in the CCP’s pocket…
Give us a few names!
“has produced and published media content that supports and promotes actions and policies which destabilise … and undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty, or independence of …”
remove Ukraine and put one of many countries where US/west has been interfering and you’re going to be busy with sanctioning for a long time.
Sanctioning Philips is just another example of irrational behaviour of our government showing that all other means have been exhausted in defeating Russia which will soon swallow parts of Ukraine leaving what’s left to becoming a failed state.
one of the biggest crimes of Philips is of course showing things that contradict western propaganda like that a lot of people in the east of the country are resolutely pro-russian (even post Feb 22) and that there are neo-nazis in ukraine, to name just a few.
doesn’t mean that russians are angels, just that this conflict is so many things other than that barbaric russia bombing and raping peaceful ukrainians like MSM leads to believe
