I used to admire George Monbiot for his stance on the environment but I see now that I was completely misled. The man is mad, clearly a zealot and a fundamentalist. This sort of sweeping statement by a man who is NOT a farmer and who obviously doesn’t eat any animal products as if he knows what is best for human is dangerous in the extreme. Humans have farmed animals since the beginning. It gives us a relationship with the land that is largely unfelt and unexperienced by the metropolitan vegans. I have looked on as more and more land is given up to wildlife in re-wilding schemes, which is largely a good thing but we also need to eat and we need to grow food and for those who eat meat, raise animals and so there needs to be a conscious balance. It saddens me every time I see badgers, hedgehogs, foxes and rabbits lying dead beside the road and I know that this is just the larger mammals and there are small creatures and insects on the land, fish and water creatures in our waterways and the birds and flying insects that are also in decline.
